English summary: Protestantism and National Socialism went to a great extent hand in hand in the Palatinate. National Socialist functionaries saw themselves as good Protestants. Church representatives were partially enthusiastic followers of National Socialism. A distinctive church struggle ("Kirchenkampf") didn't exist. The present manual gives an overall picture of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate during the time of National Socialism. By embedding it consequently in supra-regional and political contexts and in the context of every day life it stimulates reflection on the history of National Socialism as a whole. The first volume presents an overview of the development of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate. The second volume opens up - by means of selected short biographies - approaches to the understanding of different attitudes and behavioural dispositions. German description: Protestantismus und Nationalsozialismus gingen in der Pfalz weitgehend Hand in Hand. NS-Funktionare sahen sich als gute Protestanten. Kirchenvertreter waren zum Teil begeisterte Nationalsozialisten. Einen ausgepragten 'Kirchenkampf' gab es nicht. Das Handbuch bietet erstmals ein Gesamtbild der pfalzischen Landeskirche im Nationalsozialismus. Durch eine konsequente Einbettung in uberregionale, politische und alltagsgeschichtliche Zusammenhange will es das Nachdenken uber die NS-Geschichte insgesamt anregen. Es weiss sich den Standards geschichtswissenschaftlicher Forschung verpflichtet und ist zugleich auch fur Nichtfachleute mit Gewinn zu lesen. Der erste Band bietet einen Uberblick uber den Weg der pfalzischen Landeskirche. Weiter wird nach der politischen Rolle der Kirche und nach der Ausgestaltung unterschiedlicher kirchlicher Handlungsfelder gefragt. Der zweite Band eroffnet uber ausgewahlte Kurzbiographien Zugange zu verschiedenen Einstellungen und Handlungsdispositionen.

Kirchen in Europa haben eine spezifische Erfahrungs-Geschichte mit ihrer Verhältnisbestimmung zur Nation. Obwohl im Prinzip darüber einig, dass der christliche Glaube in seiner Grundtendenz von einem übernationalen, ja universalistischen Charakter geprägt ist, wird spätestens seit dem 19. Jahrhundert immer wieder gefragt, ob nicht doch Nation und nationale Identität zur Schöpfung Gottes gehören. Gegenwärtig wird das in den Kirchen Europas kontrovers diskutiert, eng verbunden mit Erfahrungen von Migration. "Nation" klingt anders für protestantische Minderheitskirchen als für orthodoxe oder römisch-katholische Kirche in ehemals kommunistischen Staaten und wieder anders für deutsche Kirchen, die ihre Verquickung mit dem Nationalsozialismus verarbeiten müssen. Können Nationalbewusstsein und gegenwärtige Migrationserfahrungen zusammengehen? Haben die Kirchen in ökumenischer Perspektive dazu etwas Spezifisches zu sagen? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt sich dieser Tagungsband der Societas Oecumenica. Mit Beiträgen von Elzbieta Adamiak, Niko Huttunen, Petre Maican, Ivana Noble, Friederike Nüssel, Peter Phan, Hector Scerri, Peter-Ben Smit, Andrea Strübind, Ulrike Link-Wieczorek, Kaholi Zhimomi Churches in Europe have specific historical experiences regarding their relationship with the nation. Although in principle it is agreed that the Christian faith is in its basic tendency shaped by a supranational, even universalistic character, since the 19th century at the latest it has been repeatedly asked whether nation and national identity do not belong to God's creation. At present this is controversially discussed in the churches of Europe, closely connected with experiences of migration. Can national consciousness and current migration experiences go together? Do churches have anything specific to say about this in an ecumenical perspective? These are the questions addressed in this conference volume of the Societas Oecumenica.

The book sheds light on various chapters in the long history of Protestant-Jewish relations, from the Reformation to the present. Going beyond questions of antisemitism and religious animosity, it aims to disentangle some of the intricate perceptions, interpretations, and emotions that have characterized contacts between Protestantism and Judaism, and between Jews and Protestants. While some papers in the book address Luther’s antisemitism and the NS-Zeit, most papers broaden the scope of the investigation: Protestant-Jewish theological encounters shaped not only antisemitism but also the Jewish Reform movement and Protestant philosemitic post-Holocaust theology; interactions between Jews and Protestants took place not only in the German lands but also in the wider Protestant universe; theology was crucial for the articulation of attitudes toward Jews, but music and philosophy were additional spheres of creativity that enabled the process of thinking through the relations between Judaism and Protestantism. By bringing together various contributions on these and other aspects, the book opens up directions for future research on this intricate topic, which bears both historical significance and evident relevance to our own time.

Protestant Resistance in Counterreformation Austria examines Austrian Protestants who actively resisted the Habsburg Counterreformation in the early seventeenth century. While a determined few decided early on that only military means could combat the growing pressure to conform, many more did not reach that conclusion until they had been forced into exile. Since the climax of their activism coincided with the Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years' War, the study also analyzes contemporary Swedish policy and the resulting Austro-Swedish interrelationship. Thus, a history of state and religion in the early modern Habsburg Monarchy evolves into a prime example of histoire croisée, of historical experiences and traditions that transcend political borders. The book does not only explore the historical conflict itself, however, but also uses it as a case study on societal recollection. Austrian nation-building, which tenuously commenced in the interwar era but was fully implemented after the restoration of Austrian statehood in 1945, was anchored in a conservative ideological tradition with strong sympathies for the Habsburg legacy. This ideological perspective also influenced the assessment of the confessional period. The modern representation of early modern conflicts reveals the selectivity of historical memory.

The monastic erudition of the old religious orders was a pillar of the Catholic Enlightenment within the Holy Roman Empire and many other European countries.
