Given the advanced state of digital technology and social media, one would think that the Democratic and Republican Parties would be reasonably well-matched in terms of their technology uptake and sophistication. But as past presidential campaigns have shown, this is not the case. So what explains this odd disparity? Political scientists have shown that Republicans effectively used the strategy of party building and networking to gain campaign and electoral advantage throughout the twentieth century. In Prototype Politics, Daniel Kreiss argues that contemporary campaigning has entered a new technology-intensive era that the Democratic Party has engaged to not only gain traction against the Republicans, but to shape the new electoral context and define what electoral participation means in the twenty-first century. Prototype Politics provides an analytical framework for understanding why and how campaigns are newly "technology-intensive," and why digital media, data, and analytics are at the forefront of contemporary electoral dynamics. The book discusses the importance of infrastructure, the contexts within which technological innovation happens, and how the collective making of prototypes shapes parties and their technological futures. Drawing on an analysis of the careers of 629 presidential campaign staffers from 2004-2012, as well as interviews with party elites on both sides of the aisle, Prototype Politics details how and why the Democrats invested more in technology, were able to attract staffers with specialized expertise to work in electoral politics, and founded an array of firms to diffuse technological innovations down ballot and across election cycles. Taken together, this book shows how the differences between the major party campaigns on display in 2012 were shaped by their institutional histories since 2004, as well as that of their extended network of allied organizations. In the process, this book argues that scholars need to understand how technological development around politics happens in time and how the dynamics on display during presidential cycles are the outcome of longer processes.

Prototypes have acquired much prominence and visibility in recent times. Software development is perhaps the case in point, where the release of non-stable versions of programmes (beta versions) has become commonplace, as is famously the case in free and open source software. Prototyping has also become an important currency of explanation and description in art-technology contexts, where the emphasis is on the productive and processual aspects of experimentation: Medialabs, hacklabs, community and social art collectives, dorkbots, open collaborative websites or design thinking workshops are spaces and sites where prototyping and experimentation have taken hold as both modes of knowledge-production and cultural and sociological styles of exchange and interaction. Experimentation has also been at the centre of recent reassessments of the organisation of laboratory, expert and more generally epistemic cultures in the sciences. An interesting development is the shift in emphasis from the experimental as a knowledge-site to the experimental as a social process. This book brings some of the leading scholars in the fields of anthropology, social studies of science and technology, and critical design thinking, in a theoretical and ethnographic dialogue to explore the affordances of the ‘prototype’ as a figure of our contemporary. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Cultural Economy.

In a short and concise form this book describes a generic system for a fair and efficient democratic government. While we present a theoretical bird's eye model in a fictional country, it is of particular relevance to Canada with its current debate about the first-past-the-post electoral system and the usefulness of an appointed Senate. Democratic governments offer the best guarantee against human rights violations but they are not free of shortcomings. Excessive partisan politics, pop and celebrity fixations that may lead to emotional and irrational ballots or the undue influence of financial means to gain political power are just a few examples. The purpose of this book is to suggest safeguards against such weakness. Our prime tenets are (i) administrative efficiency, (ii) a government that is transparent and accountable with sufficient checks and balances, (iii) broad popular participation in the political process, (iv) regional self-determination and (v) the protection of minority rights. While grass-root democracies are often accused of suffering under slowness and indecisiveness we demonstrate how modern internet technology would make it possible to adhere to strict democratic fundamentals and still maintain a high degree of proficiency. We present a concept of a web-based infrastructure and syntax to accommodate voter registration and electronic voting. In democracies, the building blocks of the government are political parties. We examine how parties are being formed, followed by a discussion about the election of members to the parliament. Much space is allocated to the distinction between professional and non-professional parliamentarians. Our next attention is directed to various forms of the legislative assembly. We scrutinize (i) the Parliamentary versus Presidential System of Government, followed by (ii) a study of Unicameral and Bicameral Legislatures and finally (iii) Multiple-Party and Dual-Party Parliaments. We also ask the critical question about the need for an Opposition. Similarly, we discuss the Executive Branch of the Government and how it is being chosen. We try to resolve the conflict between partisanship and pragmatism on the one hand, and the aspiration to govern by technical decision making on the other hand. After a review of the legislative and executive branches of the government, a discussion about the law making-process is in order. The very essence of democracy is the power that is bestowed to the people. We address topics such as: (i) The Right to Know, (ii) Petitions, (iii) Public Consultations, (iv) Referendums and (v) Recalls. An important feature of modern multi-faceted democracies is a federalist structure of the country. We explain how the idea of federalism can also be applied to the configuration of multi-candidate electoral districts. The final chapter is dedicated to minority protection. We define the term of "Visible Minority," followed by a narrative of the privileges that should be granted to them.
