Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: Idioms - Cognitive and Didactic Aspect, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Idioms are an important factor in native-like discourse by an English as a foreign language (EFL) speaker. According to Fernando (1996) "the sheer number of idioms and their high frequency in discourse make them an important aspect of vocabulary acquisition and language learning in general". Many linguists claim that idioms require special attention in language programs and should not be relegated to a position of secondary importance in the curriculum. However, classroom learning of EFL is - at least in Germany - not very concerned with the teaching of idioms and fixed expressions, as analyses from current and historical textbooks have shown. This results in the necessity for the teacher to make up own exercises or series of lessons to put the teaching of fixed expressions into the curriculum. The cognitive approach to language learning provides useful aspects and implications on how to organize idiom learning in a classroom context. The aim of our paper is to use the cognitive linguistics approach towards idioms and other fixed expressions in English to analyse different homepages on the World Wide Web. In order to do this we will first present a short survey of different cognitive approaches to idioms and their didactic implications for teaching exercises. We will then go on with an analysis of six websites with respect to how the content, structure and exercises follow the implications given by the presented cognitive approaches. After a discussion of the positive and negative aspects we found on the web, we try to give a proposition on how an idiom learning website could be structured and how exercises could look like, when they try to follow a cognitive approach.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Didactics - History, grade: A, University of Cape Coast (DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES EDUCATION (DASSE)), course: Project for History, language: English, abstract: Knowledge of one’s heritage is one of the most cherished ideals in a society. This creates the awareness of how the people lived in the past - the way they dressed, the way they danced, the food they ate, their economic resources and how they passed on the above cultural values to their future generations. In many African indigenous settings, for instance, the cultural heritage such as festivals, religion, languages spoken and even the type of education they practiced all have their meanings and have evolved from the past. It is therefore obvious that to understand the present, we must definitely know the past. It is only based on the knowledge of the past that we can predict the future and live fruitful lives based on the past circumstances. The primary aim of History teaching in Africa is to put the African child into the stream of History from which he has been absent for so long. People do not accord it the necessary attention it deserves. This is fundamentally due to the little importance attached to it. Consequently, students are not aware of their past and yet they seemed not to be perturbed. A questionnaire was administered to 180 respondents were randomly sampled from three High Schools in Cape Coast Municipality of Ghana. SPSS was used to conduct descriptive statistics on the data collected from the respondents. The results show that students offer history because of their interest in the subject. Their offering history has nothing to do with advice from parents, friends and its easiness as a subject of study. Unfortunately, the resources available in the three High schools are awfully inadequate. The predominant teaching method is a combination of lecture method, dictation of notes and the use of visual aids and the discussion method. However, another equally important methods such as excursion were not being employed in the teaching of history. This may be due to financial constraints and lack of cooperation from the schools' administration. It is therefore recommended that history as a subject should be made compulsory for at least a year in the High Schools. The government must also resource teachers to deliver the subjects using all the necessary teaching methods. Teachers of the subjects should also improvise in the face of lack of resources in teaching the subject.

Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: BSc Honours in Computer Science, , course: Honors research project, language: English, abstract: Most universities offer a wide range of courses in which students can enrol. As a result, students may feel overwhelmed with the many possibilities and large amount of information, resulting in having a difficult time deciding what to sign up for. To this end, there is a need for a system that can assist students in this crucial process. Thus, we set out to develop a web-based recommender application that could generate a list of valuable, accurate course recommendations, taking into account a student’s likelihood of succeeding academically. Choosing an effective and stimulating set of courses is not an easy task for a student. There are several factors at play when it comes to choosing courses that one must study. One of these factors may be the assumed difficulty of a course that a student is considering to take. Of course, if the course is compulsory, then the student has no choice but to enrol in it. However, in the situation in where there are many different subjects to choose from, the student may shy away from taking optional courses that might pose a significant challenge, in terms of workload or being unable to fully understand the course content. These courses would clearly have a negative effect on academic performance. However, there may also be some students who are looking to be challenged, and for whom choosing more difficult courses would be an exciting challenge. In terms of academic performance, effective course selection is of utmost importance in ensuring a student is able to succeed in her or his studies and obtain their qualification(s).

Americans have long recognized that investments in public education contribute to the common good, enhancing national prosperity and supporting stable families, neighborhoods, and communities. Education is even more critical today, in the face of economic, environmental, and social challenges. Today's children can meet future challenges if their schooling and informal learning activities prepare them for adult roles as citizens, employees, managers, parents, volunteers, and entrepreneurs. To achieve their full potential as adults, young people need to develop a range of skills and knowledge that facilitate mastery and application of English, mathematics, and other school subjects. At the same time, business and political leaders are increasingly asking schools to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management - often referred to as "21st century skills." Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century describes this important set of key skills that increase deeper learning, college and career readiness, student-centered learning, and higher order thinking. These labels include both cognitive and non-cognitive skills- such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, effective communication, motivation, persistence, and learning to learn. 21st century skills also include creativity, innovation, and ethics that are important to later success and may be developed in formal or informal learning environments. This report also describes how these skills relate to each other and to more traditional academic skills and content in the key disciplines of reading, mathematics, and science. Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century summarizes the findings of the research that investigates the importance of such skills to success in education, work, and other areas of adult responsibility and that demonstrates the importance of developing these skills in K-16 education. In this report, features related to learning these skills are identified, which include teacher professional development, curriculum, assessment, after-school and out-of-school programs, and informal learning centers such as exhibits and museums.
