Distributed energy resources (DER) are quickly making their way to industry primarily as backup generation. They are effective at starting and then producing full-load power within a few seconds. The distribution system is aging and transmission system development has not kept up with the growth in load and generation. The nation's transmission system is stressed with heavy power flows over long distances, and many areas are experiencing problems in providing the power quality needed to satisfy customers. Thus, a new market for DER is beginning to emerge. DER can alleviate the burden on the distribution system by providing ancillary services while providing a cost adjustment for the DER owner. This report describes 10 types of ancillary services that distributed generation (DG) can provide to the distribution system. Of these 10 services the feasibility, control strategy, effectiveness, and cost benefits are all analyzed as in the context of a future utility-power market. In this market, services will be provided at a local level that will benefit the customer, the distribution utility, and the transmission company.

In the recent years the electrical power utilities have undergone rapid restructuring process worldwide. Indeed, with deregulation, advancement in technologies and concern about the environmental impacts, competition is particularly fostered in the generation side, thus allowing increased interconnection of generating units to the utility networks. These generating sources are called distributed generators (DG) and defined as the plant which is directly connected to distribution network and is not centrally planned and dispatched. These are also called embedded or dispersed generation units. The rating of the DG systems can vary between few kW to as high as 100 MW. Various new types of distributed generator systems, such as microturbines and fuel cells in addition to the more traditional solar and wind power are creating significant new opportunities for the integration of diverse DG systems to the utility. Interconnection of these generators will offer a number of benefits such as improved reliability, power quality, efficiency, alleviation of system constraints along with the environmental benefits. Unlike centralized power plants, the DG units are directly connected to the distribution system; most often at the customer end. The existing distribution networks are designed and operated in radial configuration with unidirectional power flow from centralized generating station to customers. The increase in interconnection of DG to utility networks can lead to reverse power flow violating fundamental assumption in their design. This creates complexity in operation and control of existing distribution networks and offers many technical challenges for successful introduction of DG systems. Some of the technical issues are islanding of DG, voltage regulation, protection and stability of the network. Some of the solutions to these problems include designing standard interface control for individual DG systems by taking care of their diverse characteristics, finding new ways to/or install and control these DG systems and finding new design for distribution system. DG has much potential to improve distribution system performance. The use of DG strongly contributes to a clean, reliable and cost effective energy for future. This book deals with several aspects of the DG systems such as benefits, issues, technology interconnected operation, performance studies, planning and design. Several authors have contributed to this book aiming to benefit students, researchers, academics, policy makers and professionals. "Ancillary services are the services necessary to maintain the stability and reliability of the operation of a power system. Traditionally, ancillary services are provided by the large power plants and devices with appropriate capability and capacity; however, with the improvement of microgrid technologies, researchers and industry have started to considerproviding these services through microgrids. This thesis investigates the economic feasibility of providing ancillary services by means of microgrids. To do so, a cost-benefit analysis is performed for a microgrid project with ancillary service provision considered as a feature function. Three typical ancillary services are considered for this thesis, frequency regulation service under normal operations, spinning reserve service under contingency eventsand voltage control service. The microgrid comprises a natural gas-fired microturbine combined heat and power (CHP) generator, a wind turbine generator, a lithium-ion battery storage system and an aggregation of dispatchable loads. The distributed energy resources in the microgrid are modeled. A methodology is proposed to quantify the costs and benefitsassociated with the provision of ancillary services. The stakeholders are defined and the benefits are allocated to the appropriate stakeholders. The proposed methodology and models are applied to a test network. A parametric study is also conducted to analyze the impacts of the key parameters of the microgrid so that the optimal parameter settings ofthe distributed energy resources can be determined. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that ancillary service provision can bring more benefits to a microgrid project in the context assumed in this thesis." --

Ancillary Service in Active Distribution Systems from Renewable Energy Sources: Control Methodologies and Trends investigates suggested solutions for providing new ancillary services from distributed renewable energy sources in distribution grids. It explores the control strategies of converter- interfaced renewable energy sources in the new electricity markets of active distribution networks. It describes how renewable energy resources can be utilized to provide primary control to the grid in reliable and secure ways. Useful for grid operators, regulators, and power system researchers, this book serves as a unique reference on auxiliary services for distribution networks. The stability and security of existing electricity power systems is largely based on the inherent characteristics of synchronous generators, such as grid-forming capability, inertia, damping of transients and large current contribution during grid faults. The increasing penetration of converter-interfaced renewable energy sources in the distribution grids is gradually replacing the dispatchable synchronous generators, increasing power volatility and causing large frequency deviations and voltage regulation problems. Therefore, new sophisticated control strategies for converter-interfaced sources combined with energy storage systems have emerged, enabling the operation similar to synchronous generators, which can be provided as ancillary services to active distribution systems. The sophisticated control algorithms can enable operation similar to synchronous generators, providing grid inertia, damping of transients, reactive power, fault current contribution, controllable power ramp and primary frequency response. Since extra costs are incurred for the renewable energy source operators, such services can be offered through a properly designed and operated ancillary services’ market structure, fulfilling the requirements of the Distribution and Transmission System Operators. Furthermore, the increased controllability of the resources enables the adaptable provision of the ancillary services by considering the extensive ICT infrastructure of the active distribution systems.
