Pero fue una figura clave de la llamada edad de plata. Sus obras, además, suscitaron un interés de repercusiones mediáticas, como las polémicas eno a su retrato del clero o la presunta inmoralidad de su prosa y su heterodoxa visión de Cristo. En este libro, se sugieren las razones que han podido llevar a este injusto olvido literario y se muestra que, a pesar de todo, su obra nunca ha dejado de ser relevante, y ha influido en autores de postguerra tan importantes como Camilo José Cela y Francisco Umbral, en la obra narrativa de un filólogo de tanto prestigio como Antonio Prieto y en otros novelistas como Pedro de Lorenzo, Antonio Zoido y Adolfo Lizón. Guillermo Laín Corona es profesor de lengua y literatura españolas en University College London. ENGLISH VERSION Why does it seem that Gabriel Miró has been neglected as a secondary writer in the literary history of Spain, with fewer and fewer readers? Miró might not have had a mass readership, as, according to the aesthetics of the Avant-Garde, he was a difficult writer. However, hisworks attracted the kind of attention that fascinated the media, including the controversies surrounding his portrayals of the clergy, the supposed immorality of his prose and his heterodox view of Christ. This book tackles the reasons for this unfair neglect and shows that, despite it, his work was never completely overlooked. Indeed, Miró influenced relevant writers of the post-Civil War period, such as Camilo José Cela and Francisco Umbral, as well as the prose fiction of an important philologist like Antonio Prieto and other novelists such as Pedro de Lorenzo, Antonio Prieto and Adolfo Lizón. Guillermo Laín Corona is a Teaching Fellow in Spanish Language and Literature at University College London.

Gabriel Francisco Miro Ferrer was born on July 28th 1879, in Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Brought up in the Castilian-speaking Alicante, Miro was sent away to school in nearby Orihela, aged eight. The Jesuit Colegio de Santo Domingo would become the "Jesus" in The Leper Bishop. Miro studied Law, first a the University of Valencia, then at Granada, from which he graduated in 1900. He married in 1901, at the age of 22, and in that same year published his first novel, La mujer de Ojeda. The Leper Bishop was published in December 1926, when Miro was a grandfather, and he died not long afterwards, in May 1930, of peritonitis. The Leper Bishop (El obispo leproso) follows the story (begun in Our Father San Daniel) of a boy, Pablo, who is sent to a Jesuit school - a place where an extremist version of Catholicism is inflicted on its pupils. The novel portrays the struggle between innocence and evil, which, by the end of the book, is tempered by understanding. Miro has traditionally been seen as a writer difficult or impossible to translate, with very few of his works available in English. It is hoped that this edition will bring this lyrical writer's work to a wider audience.

Argentinean philosopher, theologian, and historian Enrique Dussel understands the present international order as divided into the "culture of the center" -- by which he means the ruling elite of Europe, North America, and Russia -- and "the peoples of the periphery" -- by which he means the populations of Latin America, Africa, and part of Asia, and the oppressed classes (including women and children) throughout the world. In 'Philosophy of Liberation,' he presents a profound analysis of the alienation of peripheral peoples resulting from the imperialism of the center for more than five centuries. Dussel's aim is to demonstrate that the center's historic cultural, military, and economic domination of poor countries is 'philosophically' founded on North Atlantic onthology. By expressing supposedly universal knowledge, European philosophies, argues Dussel, have served to equate the cultural standards, modes of behavior, and rationalistic orientation of the West with human nature and to condemn the unique characteristics of peripheral peoples as "nonbeing, nothing, chaos, irrationality." Hence, Western philosophies have historically legitimated and hidden the domination that oppressed cultures have suffered at the hands of the center. Dussel probes multinational corporations, the communications media, and the armies of the center with their counterparts among the Third World elite. The creation of a just world order in the future, according to Dussel, hinges on the liberation of the periphery, based on a philosophy that is able to "think the world" from the perspective of the poor and to reclaim the Third World's distinct cultural inheritance, which is imbedded in the popular cultures of the poor. Apart from the liberation of the periphery, there will be no future: "the center will feed itself on the sameness it has ingrained within itself. The death of the child, of the poor, will be its own death." This is a disquieting but stimulating book for scholars and advanced students of philosophy, ethics, liberation theology, and global politics.
