This study identifies and describes the basic building blocks of a biblical psalm: the levels of colon, verse, strophe and stanza. In this study eleven psalms have been chosen with stanzas that are clearly demarcated by the presence of refrains. Seven of these are analysed thoroughly (Psalms 42-43, 46, 49, 56, 57, 59) and another four more briefly (Psalms 39, 67, 80, 99). This is a timely and closely argued statement of the importance of integrating structure and content in one's interpretation of a psalm.

The Psalms written by Samuel L. Terrien and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Religion categories.

In this monumental work, his most ambitious undertaking, the late Samuel Terrien brings together a lifetime of scholarship on Psalms, long the wellspring of Jewish spirituality as well as the main hymnal of the Christian church. The book's insightful and clearly written introduction treats such subjects as the longevity and ecumenicity of the psalms, their Near Eastern background, the Hebrew text and ancient versions, their music, their strophic structure, their literary genre, their theology, and their relation to the New Testament. In the commentary itself Terrien freshly elucidates the theological significance of these collected poems by putting readers in touch with the formal versatility and religious passion of the psalmists themselves. While Terrien always engages in scientific exegesis before drawing theological conclusions, he is careful to allow full expression to the theological -- and, especially, the doxological -- voice of these unmatched spiritual songs. The result is a commentary that provides a link between the archaic language of Psalms and the intellectual demands of modern thinking and spirituality. Throughout his exposition Terrien shows great respect for the scribal testimony of the Jewish tradition, especially the consonants of the Masoretic text. He likewise displays great care in finding the most accurate meaning for Hebrew words of obscure origin. This meticulous work renders a translation of Psalms more reliable than those of Terrien's predecessors. He also draws on many fruitful gains of structural analysis in discerning the strophic divisions within the Hebrew text. Often he finds unity of composition where earlier critics denied it. And for readersinterested in specific aspects of translation and interpretation, Terrien has appended bibliographical lists of modern works on each psalm.

A CLEAR LOOK AT THE PSALMS IN FULL COLOR WITH DETAILED NOTES AND STRUCTURES:This follow-up to The Psalms in Poetic Form is a must own for any serious Bible student. It gives painstaking details on how Jesus Christ is the focal subject of the prophecies in Psalms. It also gives beautifully illustrated color-coded structures of all 150 Psalms, showing the orderly arrangement of subjects and concepts in this Old Testament songs. This work on Psalms Background and Structure with Explanations of Key Scriptures is a result of over forty years of studying the Psalms and New Testament scriptures relating to our Lord Jesus Christ and his accomplishments. I have done my best to clearly and honestly share what I have learned in hopes that it will inspire and benefit the reader. Of course, only God can open the eyes of a person's understanding, and I gladly leave that job and responsibility to Him.This work can serve as a companion volume to The Psalms in Poetic Form (the Bedside Reader and the Large Print Edition). My goal in offering that translation was to make the Psalms more enjoyable and understandable to the reader, with God's help and support. The following introduction will give insight into how to best use these studies on the background and structure of all 150 Psalms, with detailed notes on key scriptures relating to the Messiah. They are a resource and aid to your personal growth and understanding. My purpose for this book, and my heart's sincere desire for the reader, is that you will grow in appreciation for what our Lord Jesus Christ has done, continues to do now, and will do for us in the future (Hebrews 13:8). He is God's true Messiah and the only real hope for mankind.Introduction:Like the good man of Psalm 1, Jesus Christ loved God's Word and studied it day and night. He read of his ancestors David and Hezekiah, who both wrote Psalms. As Jesus read each Psalm, he would have seen that they in some way speak of what he would do and accomplish as God's promised Messiah. The original title for the book of Psalms means to "praise." This Hebrew name for the Psalms comes from the root halal, as in hallelu-Jah--Praise the Lord! It is thrilling to think about the young Jesus of Nazareth opening the scroll of Tehillim, the book of praises, and learning more of his mission and calling in life. This included much suffering and self-sacrifice, as Psalm 22 foretells in great detail of the manner of his suffering and death--mockers around him, his hands and feet pierced, casting lots for his clothing. Yet Christ had great hope, for Psalm 16 tells of how David looked forward to his "son" the Messiah--that the Christ would not remain in the grave, but would be raised from the dead by God Almighty. The format of this work mirrors its title: the background and structure are given for each Psalm, followed by detailed notes on key scriptures found in that Psalm. I have consulted many Biblical writers over my four decades in this subject, and have personally checked all information against the scriptures themselves. Only after such scrutiny did I consider them worthy to share with others.

As against traditional cultic and sociological interpretations of the 'I' Psalms, this original study stresses the 'I' as a literary figure. Yet on the other hand, the historical interest of the traditional models is retained, here with emphasis on 'original' function and intent. There is a common set of central motifs related to the 'I'-figure, most easily discernible when referring to categories of locality. The 'I' is depicted in a sacred landscape of contrasting localities-'Sheol' and 'Temple' connected by the concept of 'Way'. This motif structure deploys an ideological language in which the 'I' figure is an embodiment of a religious paradigm, that attests a process of actualization and integration. The religiosity of these texts is of a mystical character, pointing to some religious practice of intense personal character aimed at experience of a divine reality. No doubt the social location of such experience was among the elite, but some texts hint at a possible 'democratization' of the religious practice they portray.

A “Psalter/Commentary” combining in-depth study of Psalms 1–41 with 108 new songs based on the text of these psalms. This volume, encompassing Psalms 1–41 (“book one” of the book of Psalms), is the first of three projected volumes. Volume two will incorporate books two and three of Psalms (42–89), and volume three will incorporate books four and five of the Psalter (90–150). This series is intended for use by church leaders, ministers, informed lay persons, and Bible teachers to obtain basic understanding of some of the concerns and issues found in aparticular psalm, and then to use the psalm for present-day worship in song. For each psalm there is a translation, treatment of its structure and theology, and then two to four musical settings: a “traditional” hymn setting and a “contemporary” setting, and sometimes also a verbatim chant. This variety demonstrates several ways of bringing the Psalms into Christian worship. With two or three exceptions, all of these metrical psalms are new compositions for Timeless. Most of the music in Timeless is intended for the average congregation to sing. Timeless is an ecumenical and international project. While having its origin in the a cappella tradition of Churches of Christ, the book is based on the conviction that all Christian communions share the original hymnbook of the second temple and the church. The editor, therefore, has solicited commentaries, compositions, and lyrics from Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Pentecostals, Roman Catholics, and others.
