Ai più delicati temi di natura sessuale e affettiva sono dedicati i saggi proposti in questo volume, che si ricollegano palesemente alla rivoluzionaria teoria sulla libido infantile formulata da Freud nei Tre saggi sulla sessualità. L'analisi del comportamento amoroso dei nevrotici consente a Freud il passaggio all'indagine della sessualità «normale» e delle sue fasi evolutive, strettamente connesse alle esigenze del vivere sociale e alle richieste della civiltà contemporanea, che non permette la libera espressione degli istinti amorosi. Numerosi i collegamenti che Freud instaura tra aspetti caratteriali e nevrosi vere e proprie da una parte e fissazioni a momenti particolari di tale sviluppo dall'altra: il fondamento della malattia nasce infatti per Freud da un'inibizione nella storia evolutiva della libido. È la coesistenza degli influssi di tali fissazioni e delle successive frustrazioni legate al reale a generare atteggiamenti sessuali non precisamente «normali» o autentiche patologie. Sigmund Freudpadre della psicoanalisi, nacque a Freiberg, in Moravia, nel 1856. Autore di opere di capitale importanza (tra le quali citeremo soltanto L’interpretazione dei sogni, Tre saggi sulla sessualità, Totem e tabù, Psicopatologia della vita quotidiana, Al di là del principio del piacere), insegnò all’università di Vienna dal 1920 fino al 1938, quando fu costretto dai nazisti ad abbandonare l’Austria. Morì l’anno seguente a Londra, dove si era rifugiato insieme con la famiglia. Di Freud la Newton Compton ha pubblicato molti saggi in volumi singoli, la raccolta Opere 1886/1921 e L’interpretazione dei sogni - Tre saggi sulla sessualità - Introduzione alla psicoanalisi.
