A instituição escolar tornou-se central na sociedade contemporânea e adotou o modelo das organizações econômicas do mundo capitalista, cujo caráter é puramente mercantil. Nesse sistema organizacional monocêntrico, imperam o espaço econômico e a dimensão de tempo serial. Esse espaço-tempo comporta uma visão teleológica de mundo e uma concepção funcional da razão, de caráter utilitário, que descreve o ordenamento das pessoas no nível pessoal ou social. Como reflexo desse enfoque, tem-se o espetáculo e a mercantilização do conhecimento, bem como o espetáculo da infância. Considerando a escola como uma organização mercantil em que prevalece a ideia de tempo serial, é possível admitir que as concepções de infância e de desenvolvimento infantil assumem um caráter linear e cronológico. Portanto, pode-se pensar que quanto mais escolarizada for uma coletividade, mais forte será a tendência a atribuir à infância e ao desenvolvimento o sentido da vida adulta. Em vista de tais argumentos, buscou-se examinar se as concepções de infância e de desenvolvimento infantil guardam relação com o grau de importância e penetração da escola na vida de uma comunidade. O sistema social e temporal hegemônico em nossa sociedade não é o único; outros sistemas coexistem com a economia e com o tempo serial, como a isonomia, cujo tempo característico é o convivial, e a fenonomia, com seu tempo de salto. Num sistema paraeconômico, os três tempos e os três espaços atuam simultaneamente na vida das pessoas. Foi esse sistema paraeconômico que encontramos em comunidades tradicionais do interior do Maranhão, cuja atividade principal é a quebra do coco babaçu e a agricultura. Nessas comunidades, a escola não é central na vida das pessoas. Os pais reconhecem a importância do conhecimento escolar, mas ele não define o lugar das pessoas e o futuro das crianças. Além disso, os pais não dissociam o desenvolvimento e a aprendizagem da criança. Na criação de cada filho, a concepção que os conduz contém ideias de autonomia e de responsabilidade da criança, seja com ela mesma ou com os demais. E isso acontece quando a criança convive com os pais na atividade do trabalho.

This book shows how behavior analysis can be applied to teaching reading and writing to primary school students and to special populations, such as children with intellectual and hearing disabilities and illiterate adults. Originally published in Portuguese, this contributed volume is now translated into English and presents for the first time to international researchers and students a comprehensive overview of a research program developed for more than three decades in Brazil which gave birth to a unique teaching program based on the concept of stimulus equivalence: the Learning to Read and Write in Small Steps. The book is divided into four parts. The first part presents the theoretical framework and the historical context in which the teaching program was developed by the group led by Drs. Julio Cesar de Rose and Deisy das Graças de Souza, currently organized in the National Institute of Science and Technology on Behavior, Cognition, and Learning (INCT/ECCE). The second part describes the modules that make up the Learning to Read and Write in Small Steps teaching program. The third part presents results of empirical research conducted with children with intellectual and hearing disabilities and illiterate adults. Finally, the fourth part presents contributions from other areas of knowledge – such as speech therapy, linguistics, and education – to the understanding of reading and writing and possible dialogues between them and behavior analysis. Contributions of Behavior Analysis to Reading and Writing Comprehension will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of psychology and education interested in the application of behavior analysis to teaching and learning processes. It will also be a valuable resource for professionals directly working in educational institutions, such as elementary school teachers and psycho-pedagogues. This book presents the method developed by Dr. Silvia Helena Koller and her students and collaborators to apply Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory of Human Development to empirical studies with children and adolescents. Although Bronfenbrenner's theory, in different stages of development, has been widely cited by several researchers, surprisingly little has been written about the theory itself, its evolution or about the methods that should be used to test it.
