Il maschilismo è ancora tra noi. Irritante e potente, continua a condizionare la nostra vita collettiva. Il libro è una edizione riccamente ampliata e aggiornata rispetto alla prima pubblicazione di quasi dieci anni fa. Il divario di genere in questi anni, a livello internazionale e nazionale, non è cambiato in modo sostanziale. I progressi sono lenti; persistono troppe discriminazioni e, soprattutto, persiste una cultura ancora per molti aspetti patriarcale. Abbiamo assistito al movimento Me Too, che ha cambiato il panorama delle relazioni tra uomini e donne in molti paesi. Subito dopo, però, l'epidemia di Covid-19 ha pesantemente penalizzato le donne, incidendo sui tassi lavorativi e sulle relazioni familiari. Ma proprio l'esperienza della pandemia ci suggerisce una riflessione: che sia arrivato il momento di capovolgere gli schemi culturali tradizionali e riconoscere che la capacità di cura – tratto stereotipicamente attribuito alle donne – valga più dei principali tratti stereotipici maschili (la forza e il potere)?

Personal pronouns have a special status in languages. As indexical tools they are the means by which languages and persons intimately interface with each other within a particular social structure. Pronouns involve more than mere grammatical functions in live communication acts. They variously signal the gender of speakers as parts of utterances or in their anaphoric roles. They also prominently indicate with a range of degrees the kind of social relationships that hold between speakers from intimacy to indifference, from dominance to submission, and from solidarity to hostility. Languages greatly vary in the number of pronouns and other address terms they offer to their users with a distinct range of social values. Children learn their relative position in their family and in their society through the “correct” use of pronouns. When languages come into contact because of population migrations or through the process of translation, pronouns are the most sensitive zone of tension both psychologically and politically. This volume endeavours to probe the comparative pragmatics of pronominal systems as social processes in a representative set from different language families and cultural areas.

This book aims at shifting the emphasis from a general vision of gender-based violence to a more opaque, yet equally destructive one, that related to "proximity violence". The first type of violence is exercised in multiple situations and in the generality of relationships experienced by people involving others who are both strangers to and intimate with each other. Proximity violence provides and includes a fiduciary kind of "proximity", of "dependent intimacy", where the trust that the victim places in the other (her tormentor) favours the exercise of violence itself, allowing it to take place, thus making it practically imperceptible when not actually normal, in extreme cases. In turn, this confidence is comparable to "a veil of Maja" which, in conditions of vulnerability typical of victims, attenuates the consequences of the violence undergone or the omens of what becomes violent action. The conceptual triad: proximity violence, vulnerability, resistance-resilience is explored here, in the three main chapters and in the details aimed at identifying, in the final chapter, the mutual interconnections. This book will be of particular interest and use to undergraduate and graduate students of sociology and gender studies

In this open access book, the editors explicitly address the issue of measuring gender equality. The book introduces readers to basic concepts of gender equality, equity and equal opportunities, then discusses measuring these phenomena, the methods of constructing indicators, and reviews the main indicators that have been proposed at the international level to measure gender equality. It then sets the theoretical discussions against the findings from a Jean Monnet project financed by the European Union to highlight the importance of a regional analysis of gender equality in four main study areas: Italy, Spain, France and Germany. The results make it clear that it is necessary to move from the purely national perspective hitherto used in gender equality analyses to a regional one because differences can be highly pronounced even within the same country. This is a self-contained volume requiring limited statistical expertise for the reader and is aimed at social researchers and policymakers who wish to address gender equality from a quantitative perspective.

Sono testimonianze che documentano il persistere di una miseria relazionale e sociale, iscritta nel maschilismo ancora presente nel nostro paese. Vista dalla parte di chi la subisce, questa miseria si rivela potente nella sua quotidiana capacità di provocare dolore, di intralciare percorsi e frenare aspirazioni. I racconti testimoniano però anche la capacità di resistenza e riflessione di chi non ha più intenzione di subire, attestano la crescita di una coscienza civile che si ribella al dominio patriarcale e rivendica la necessità che donne e uomini sviluppino relazioni mature, capaci di fornire a tutte e a tutti sostegno, solidarietà, affetto.
