The typical survey course in psychology has time for only limited presentation of the research on which our knowledge is based. As a result, many students come away with a limited understanding of the role of experiments in psychological science. Where do experiments come from and how are they conducted? What are the pitfalls and how can we avoid them? What advantages do they have over intuition, authority, and common sense as guides to knowing and acting? What distinguishes research-based psychology from psychobabble? What have we learned from experimentation in psychology? This book presents, in more depth than textbook treatment permits, the background, conduct, and implications of a selection of classic experiments in psychology. The selection is designed to be diverse, showing that even for research in vastly different areas of study, the logic of research remains the same—as do its traps and pitfalls. This book will broaden and deepen the understanding of experimental methods in psychological research, examining where the research questions come from, how questions can be turned into experiments, and how researchers have faced the problems presented by research in psychology.

Who are subjects? How do they respond in experiments? What is their impact on the profession? What else can we learn from them? Subjects are a window into both uniformity and plurality; they may be the very definition of average or one of a kind. Despite this, the history of psychology often overlooks subjects in its illustrious chronicles. This well-researched book looks at the history of the use of human subjects in clinical and experimental psychology, as well as looking at the human side of those subjects who left their mark on the profession. This book presents iconic subjects who either defined the central thesis of an experiment or rebelled against it, from amnesiac H.M. and Little Albert to the defiant Subject #6 in Solomon Asch’s conformity experiments. The book explores the unspoken subtexts of being a subject, and compares and contrasts various subjects to look at the bigger picture – that is, the fact that subjects are viewed as an analytical element of experimentation, while the emotional, cultural, and philosophical aspects are often overlooked.

The Experimental Psychology Of Beauty written by C.W. Valentine and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-05 with Psychology categories.

Originally published in 1962, the experimental study of aesthetics was a field particularly associated with the name of C.W. Valentine, who in this book provided a critical review of research carried out since the end of the nineteenth century principally by British and American psychologists. The investigations described, many of them conducted by the author, are concerned with individual responses to what is commonly regarded as beautiful in painting, music, and poetry, an important distinction being made between the perception of objects as ‘beautiful’ as opposed to ‘pleasing’. The reactions of children and adults, and of people having different ethnic and social backgrounds, are explored in a variety of experiments dealing with specific elements, including colour, form, and balance in painting; musical intervals, discord, harmony, melody, and tempo; and rhythm, metre, imagery, and associations in classical and romantic poetry. Other experiments seek to disclose the temperamental and attitudinal factors underlying individual differences in the judgement and appreciation of specific works of art. Of particular interest are the studies of responses to modern paintings, poems and musical compositions. The findings throw light on the development of discrimination and taste and suggest the possibility of some common factor in the appreciation of these three arts. It was felt that critics as well as psychologists and aestheticians would find much to encourage reflection and to stimulate further research.
