What role does ethics play in the practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy? For most of its history, psychoanalysis has viewed ethics as a "side issue" in clinical work—occasionally relevant, but not central to therapeutic action. In Psychoanalysis as an Ethical Process, Robert Drozek highlights the foundational importance of ethical experience in the therapeutic relationship, as well as the role that ethical commitments have played in inspiring what has been called the "relational turn" in psychoanalysis. Using vivid clinical examples from the treatment of patients with severe personality disorders, Drozek sketches out an ethically grounded vision of analytic process, wherein analyst and patient are engaged in the co-construction of an intersubjective space that is progressively more consistent with their intrinsic worth as human beings. Psychoanalysis can thus be seen as a unique vehicle for therapeutic and ethical change, leading to a dramatic expansion of agency, altruism, and self-esteem for both participants. By bringing our analytic theories into closer contact with our ethical experiences as human beings, we can connect more fully with the fundamental humanity that unites us with our patients, and that serves as the basis for deep and lasting therapeutic change. This book will be of interest to psychotherapists and psychoanalysts, as well as scholars in ethical theory and philosophy.

Addressing the common ground between ethics and psychoanalysis, W. W. Meissner asks "Does psychoanalysis have anything to contribute to ethical understanding and reflection?" and conversely, "Does ethics have anything to offer analytic understanding of the complexities of human behavior and decision-making?" Both disciplines focus their interest and concern not only on the inner well-being of the individual, but also on questions of his or her adaptation to the outside world, including both intimate personal relations as well as broader societal and communal relations. This book explores and explicates areas of interaction and common interest between these two disciplines in the hope of opening the way to further exploration and dialogue in the understanding of the human phenomenon.

Psychoanalysis, History, and Radical Ethics: Learning to Hear explores the importance of listening, being able to speak, and those who are silenced, from a psychoanalytic perspective. In particular, it focuses on those voices silenced either collectively or individually by trauma, culture, discrimination and persecution, and even by the history of psychoanalysis. Drawing on lessons from philosophy and history as well as clinical vignettes, this book provides a comprehensive guide to understanding the role of trauma in creating silence, and the importance for psychoanalysts of learning to hear those silenced voices.

An essential guide to psychoanalytic psychotherapy in modern practice. A must-have for those new to the field and seasoned professionals alike Introduction to the Practice of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy provides up-to-date, practice-oriented coverage of the latest research and techniques in psychoanalysis. Distinguished clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Alessandra Lemma synthesizes decades of clinical experience and the latest research into actionable advice for developing analytic skills with clarity, confidence, and adaptability across diverse therapeutic settings. This popular textbook offers step-by-step guidance on essential areas of practice, including conducting assessments, formulating cases, and navigating therapeutic endings. Throughout the book, detailed yet accessible chapters demystify the processes behind psychoanalytic psychotherapy while offering real-world insights into the day-to-day practice of psychoanalytic therapy. Fully revised to reflect contemporary practice, this edition features three entirely new chapters on psychoanalytic ethics, working with the body, and online therapy. Updated and expanded chapters address new developments in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT), discuss the current evidence base for psychoanalytic interventions, present new case studies and illustrative examples, and more. “Very few psychoanalysts are capable of what Alessandra Lemma achieves with this book: a deep understanding of the life of the mind coupled with a comfortable familiarity with the science of the mind.” —MARK SOLMS, Ph.D., Editor, The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (2024). “A third edition of this classic text is testimony to how well the original edition was written. Yet it also demonstrates that psychoanalytic therapy and the contexts in which it is practiced are in continual flux. To explain these changes and offer new updates there is no better guide than Alessandra Lemma. She has been at the forefront of many developments and has endeavoured to make psychoanalytic ideas and techniques relevant for the decade that lies ahead. This is a highly readable, enjoyable, and insightful book that deserves to be read again and again. There is always something fresh to discover.” — DR. ALISTAIR ROSS, Associate Professor in Psychotherapy, Kellogg College, Author of Introducing Contemporary Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy “There are many things to cherish about Alessandra Lemma’s Introduction to the Practice of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Now appearing in its third edition, Lemma exemplifies a mentality that psychoanalysis is alive and kicking—and evolving. The book is especially candid in acknowledging how psychoanalysis, which began ahead of the social curve, but then began to lag behind, is now making up for lost time. It is a pleasure to encounter readings of Freud that are neither adulating nor deprecating, and it is even more of a pleasure to consider this version of contemporary psychoanalysis. Lemma’s work on integrating the body in psychoanalytic theory is well-known and is now incorporated into this book. In addition, Lemma addresses profound ethical issues that we have faced during the pandemic and in its aftermath. Clinicians at every stage of their careers will benefit from reading and reflecting on this terrific book.” — ELLIOT L. Psychoanalysis engages with the difficult subjects in life, but it has been slow to address climate change. Climate Crisis, Psychoanalysis, and Radical Ethics draws on the latest scientific evidence to set out the likely effects of climate change on politics, economics and society more generally, including impacts on psychoanalysts. Despite a tendency to avoid the warnings, times of crisis summon clinicians to emerge from comfortable consulting rooms. Daily engaged with human suffering, they now face the inextricably bound together crises of global warming and massive social injustices. After considering historical and emotional causes of climate unconsciousness and of compulsive consumerism, this book argues that only a radical ethics of responsibility to be "my other’s keeper" will truly wake us up to climate change and bring psychoanalysts to actively take on responsibilities, such as demanding change from governments, living more simply, flying less, and caring for the earth and its inhabitants everywhere. Linking climate justice to radical ethics by way of psychoanalysis, Donna Orange explores many relevant aspects of psychoanalytic expertise, referring to work on trauma, mourning, and the transformation of trouble into purpose. Orange makes practical suggestions for action in the psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic communities: reducing air travel, consolidating organizations and conferences, better use of internet communication and education. This book includes both philosophical considerations of egoism (close to psychoanalytic narcissism) as problematic, together with work on shame and envy as motivating compulsive and conspicuous consumption. The interweaving of climate emergency and massive social injustice presents psychoanalysts and organized psychoanalysis with a radical ethical demand and an extraordinary opportunity for leadership. Climate Crisis, Psychoanalysis, and Radical Ethics will provide accessible and thought-provoking reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, as well as philosophers, environmental studies scholars and students studying across these fields.

Ed Freeman’s influential ideas on stakeholder theory, business ethics, humanities, and capitalism became foundational in the management field and turned around the mainstream thinking about business. Stakeholder theory developed by Freeman and others posits that business is not as much about profits, but rather about creating value for its stakeholders, including employees, customers, communities, financiers, and suppliers. The relationship between a company and its stakeholders is the essence of business and should be of utmost attention to its managers. Managers should avoid resorting to trade-offs by prioritizing one stakeholder group (e.g., shareholders) over the others and strive to run their companies in the interests of all stakeholders. The idea of pursuing the interests of all stakeholders became revolutionary in management and went far beyond the management field, expanding to Law, Health Care, Education, Public Policy and Administration, and Environmental Policy. This book is a collection of Ed Freeman’s most influential and important works on stakeholder theory as well as business ethics, humanities, and capitalism.

Informed Consent To Psychoanalysis written by Elyn R. Saks and has been published by Fordham Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-19 with Psychology categories.

The goal of this book is to shed psychoanalytic light on a concept—informed consent—that has transformed the delivery of health care in the United States. Examining the concept of informed consent in the context of psychoanalysis, the book first summarizes the law and literature on this topic. Is informed consent required as a matter of positive law? Apart from statutes and cases, what do the professional organizations say about this? Second, the book looks at informed consent as a theoretical matter. It addresses such questions as: What would be the elements of a robust informed consent in psychoanalysis? Is informed consent even possible here? Can patients really understand, say, transference or regression before they experience them, and is it too late once they have? Is informed consent therapeutic or countertherapeutic? Can a “process view” of informed consent make sense here? Third, the book reviews data on the topic. A lengthy questionnaire answered by sixty-two analysts reveals their practices in this regard. Do they obtain a statement of informed consent from their patients? What do they disclose? Why do they disclose it? Do they think it is possible to obtain informed consent in psychoanalysis at all? Do they think the practice is therapeutic or countertherapeutic, and in what ways? Do they think there should or should not be an informed consent requirement for psychoanalysis? The book should appeal above all to therapists interested in the ethical dimensions of their practice.

Written by a team of veteran scholars and exciting emerging talents, The SAGE Handbook of Film Studies maps the field internationally, drawing out regional differences in the way that systematic intellectual reflection on cinema and film has been translated into an academic discipline. It examines the conversations between Film Studies and its contributory disciplines that not only defined a new field of discourse but also modified existing scholarly traditions. It reflects on the field′s dominant paradigms and debates and evaluates their continuing salience. Finally, it looks forward optimistically to the future of the medium of film, the institution of cinema and the discipline of Film Studies at a time when the very existence of film and cinema are being called into question by new technological, industrial and aesthetic developments.
