Excerpt from Psychoanalysis Its History Theory and Practice There is no dearth of excellent books on psychoanalysis. For the general public, however, they are of little practical value. They presuppose a knowledge of the subject and a familiarity with medical and analytic terms which the average reader does not possess. Moreover, they are, in the majority of cases, special monographs dealing with some definite detail of theory or practice from the exclusive point of view of one of the various schools of analysis. What I have attempted to do in the present volume is to sum up in a concise form the views of the greatest American and foreign analysts which at present are scattered in hundreds of books, pamphlets and magazine articles. I have, whenever possible, presented their thought in their own words, through either direct quotation or condensation. This is to be an unpartisan treatment of the subject. While I profess the deepest respect for Sigmund Freud, and believe that but for his scientific insight and his untiring labors, psychoanalysis would probably be to-day an undeveloped, inaccurate set of hypotheses, I hold that Jung's and Adler's theories are of inestimable value, and that no analysis would be complete which did not take into account the researches of the "Zurich School" and of the "Individual Psychologists." Psychohistory written by Jacques Szaluta and has been published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

Some may be surprised to see a work on psychoanalysis coming out of the US Merchant Marine Academy. In this outgrowth of his 1987 La Psychohistoire, Academy historian Szaluta overviews the issues and growth in psychohistory; the fundamentals of psychoanalytic theory and post-Freudian developments; the case for, and critics of, psychohistory; and the genre's methods of interpreting the past. With the resurgence of psychoanalysis in Russia and Eastern Europe, the author concludes optimistically about the interdisciplinary field's future. Presenting a new frame of reference, the author argues that Freud's theories are not the result of his genius alone but were developed in exchange with colleagues and students, which is not always apparent at first glance. Replete with examples, the author reconstructs who the theories were addressed to and the discursive context they originally belonged to, thus presenting fresh and surprising readings of Freud's oeuvre. The book also offers a glimpse into Freud's practice. For the first time, Freud's patient record books which he kept for ten years, are being reviewed, offering readers the hard facts about the length and frequency of Freud's analyses.

Historiography And Causation In Psychoanalysis written by Edwin R. Wallace, IV and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-13 with Psychology categories.

What do the psychoanalyst and the historian have in common? This important question has stimulated a lively debate within the psychoanalytic profession in recent years, bearing as it does on the very nature of the psychoanalytic enterprise. Edwin Wallace, a clinician with training in the history and philosophy of science, brings a ranging scholarly perspective to the debate, mediating between rival perspectives and clarifying the issues at stake in the process of offering his own thoughtful conception of the historical nature of psychoanalysis. For Wallace, the procedures, problems, and interpretive possibilities of psychoanalysis and history are strikingly constant and mutually illuminating. He insists, further, that the fundamentally historical nature of psychoanalysis poses no threat to its scientific dignity. In arriving at this verdict, Wallace pushes beyond his expansive treatment of the many parallels between history and psychoanalysis to a systematic consideration of the problem of causation in both disciplines. Tracing the historical background of causation in science, philosophy, history, and analysis, he offers a logical analysis of determinism and a critique of causal language in psychoanalysis while adumbrating the historical character of psychoanalytic explanation. Historiography and Causation in Psychoanalysis is a thought-provoking work that cuts across disciplinary boundaries. It will cultivate the historical sensibilities of all its clinical readers, broadening and deepening the intellectual perspective they bring to the dialogue about the nature of psychoanalytic work. Timely and rewarding reading for analysts, psychiatrists, and clinical psychologists, it will be welcomed by historians and philosophers as well.

If in what follows I bring any contribution to the history of the psychoanalytic movement nobody must be surprised at the subjective nature of this paper, nor at the rôle which falls to me therein. For psychoanalysis is my creation; for ten years I was the only one occupied with it, and all the annoyance which this new subject caused among my contemporaries has been hurled upon my head in the form of criticism. Even today, when I am no longer the only psychoanalyst, I feel myself justified in assuming that none can know better than myself what psychoanalysis is, wherein it differs from other methods of investigating the psychic life, what its name should cover, or what might better be designated as something else. - Sigmund Freud Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. Theories and Practices of Psychoanalysis in Central Europe explores the close relationship between psychoanalysis, psycho-medical discourses, literature, and the visual arts of the late 1800s and early 1900s in Central Europe. Agnieszka Sobolewska addresses the issue of theories and practices of psychoanalysis in Central Europe and the need to undertake interdisciplinary reflection on the specificity of psychoanalytic literary genres and fin-de-siècle psycho-medical discourses. With a focus on the circulation of Freudianism in the territories of present-day Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany, the book considers the creative transformations that psychoanalytic thought underwent in these countries and reflects on the specificity of psychoanalytic literary genres and the pivotal role of lifewriting genres in the psychoanalytic movement. Sobolewska’s work both fills a visible gap in research on the history of psychoanalysis in Central Europe before the outbreak of World War II and offers the first insightful analysis of the role of life writing in the development of psychoanalytic thought. Theories and Practices of Psychoanalysis in Central Europe will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training as well as scholars of the history of psychoanalysis, the history of psychology, literature, cultural anthropology, and modernism.
