Psychoanalytic Practice Today offers the reader a good understanding of the school of thought inspired by the late work of Wilfred R. Bion. The contributors share a belief in the curative power of the analytic encounter and in the capacity of the human mind to develop from the encounter with a mind capable of reverie, dreaming and thinking. The multitude of vignettes presented emphasise the necessity of the emotional involvement of the analyst with his or her patients for improvement to take place. The book is divided in two parts: ‘Psychopathology’ and ‘Emotions and Feelings’. The first part adapts a more classic description of psychiatric disorders by diagnostic criteria, from neuroses to psychoses and including depression and borderline states. The second part of the book takes a closer look at specific clinical manifestations of basic emotions such as anger, surprise, sadness and more complex ones such as jealousy, abandonment and betrayal. The common thread is represented by the central place of dreaming in the psychoanalytic field as a tool to understand these clinical manifestations, and to allow for their psychic representation as an emotional experience. The contributions together offer a varied introduction to current ideas that are growing increasingly interesting to English speaking readers, with a sufficient character of originality, irreverence and creativity that bears witness to the maturity of Italian psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic Practice Today will offer new ideas to the practicing psychoanalyst and psychodynamic psychotherapist.

We are pleased to present the second volume of our study on Psychoana lytic Practice, which we entitle Clinical Studies. Together, the two volumes fulfill the functions usually expected of a textbook on theory and tech nique. In fact, some reviewers have asked why such a title was not cho sen. One of the reasons for our narrower choice was that our primary concern is focused on those aspects of psychoanalytic theory that are relevant to treatment. The first volume, entitled Principles, has evoked much interest within and outside the professional community, creating high expectations to ward its clinical counterpart. After all, psychoanalytic principles must demonstrate their value and efficacy in treatment, i. e., in achieving changes in symptoms and their underlying structures. This is apparent in the clinical studies contained in this book, and in the process of compil ing them the senior author has had the opportunity to take stock of his long professional career.

A Psychoanalytic Exploration of the Body in Today's World: On the Body examines the importance of the body in everyday psychoanalytic practice and beyond. Written by world leading clinicians and international scholars, this important book aims to relocate the psychoanalytic body in the modern, more challenging world. Bringing together perspectives from across the range of psychoanalytic schools of thought, it covers essential analytic topics such as family and parenting, sex and gender, illness and psychosomatics, and concepts of the body in infancy. Though in Freud’s writing the intertwining of body and psyche is fundamental, psychoanalytic thought has sometimes downplayed or ignored this idea. This book returns the body to its rightful place in psychoanalysis, and brings the body into the contemporary world of technology and change, offering fresh insight into the sick body, the sexual body, the speaking body, the body of the changing family in which the traditional gendered labels no longer fit seamlessly, gender dynamics and much more. A Psychoanalytic Exploration of the Body in Today's World gives renewed and increased emphasis to an essential tenant of psychoanalysis. With contributions from some of the most important modern psychoanalysts, this book will prove an essential work for both psychotherapists and academics.

Drawing on findings from neuroscience, theory and clinical material from many schools of psychoanalytic thought, this book offers a comprehensive guide to understanding how psychosis is conceptualised from a psychoanalytic perspective. It looks at how to work with psychotic patients, typical problems in treating psychosis and the role of pharmacology. It demonstrates the relational dimension, capable of strengthening the patient’s observing Ego and facilitating the integration of the different areas of the personality. This process can identify and work through the main psychological stress factors involved in psychotic disturbances, transforming chaotic thoughts into springboards for important insights, and offering patients the precious chance to construct for the first time a creative relationship with their own existence. An essential guide to psychoanalytic psychotherapy in modern practice. A must-have for those new to the field and seasoned professionals alike Introduction to the Practice of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy provides up-to-date, practice-oriented coverage of the latest research and techniques in psychoanalysis. Distinguished clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Alessandra Lemma synthesizes decades of clinical experience and the latest research into actionable advice for developing analytic skills with clarity, confidence, and adaptability across diverse therapeutic settings. This popular textbook offers step-by-step guidance on essential areas of practice, including conducting assessments, formulating cases, and navigating therapeutic endings. Throughout the book, detailed yet accessible chapters demystify the processes behind psychoanalytic psychotherapy while offering real-world insights into the day-to-day practice of psychoanalytic therapy. Fully revised to reflect contemporary practice, this edition features three entirely new chapters on psychoanalytic ethics, working with the body, and online therapy. Updated and expanded chapters address new developments in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT), discuss the current evidence base for psychoanalytic interventions, present new case studies and illustrative examples, and more. “Very few psychoanalysts are capable of what Alessandra Lemma achieves with this book: a deep understanding of the life of the mind coupled with a comfortable familiarity with the science of the mind.” —MARK SOLMS, Ph.D., Editor, The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (2024). “A third edition of this classic text is testimony to how well the original edition was written. Yet it also demonstrates that psychoanalytic therapy and the contexts in which it is practiced are in continual flux. To explain these changes and offer new updates there is no better guide than Alessandra Lemma. She has been at the forefront of many developments and has endeavoured to make psychoanalytic ideas and techniques relevant for the decade that lies ahead. This is a highly readable, enjoyable, and insightful book that deserves to be read again and again. There is always something fresh to discover.” — DR. ALISTAIR ROSS, Associate Professor in Psychotherapy, Kellogg College, Author of Introducing Contemporary Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy “There are many things to cherish about Alessandra Lemma’s Introduction to the Practice of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Now appearing in its third edition, Lemma exemplifies a mentality that psychoanalysis is alive and kicking—and evolving. The book is especially candid in acknowledging how psychoanalysis, which began ahead of the social curve, but then began to lag behind, is now making up for lost time. It is a pleasure to encounter readings of Freud that are neither adulating nor deprecating, and it is even more of a pleasure to consider this version of contemporary psychoanalysis. Lemma’s work on integrating the body in psychoanalytic theory is well-known and is now incorporated into this book. In addition, Lemma addresses profound ethical issues that we have faced during the pandemic and in its aftermath. Clinicians at every stage of their careers will benefit from reading and reflecting on this terrific book.” — ELLIOT L. The Theory and Practice of Psychoanalytic Therapy: Listening for the Subtext outlines the core concepts that frame the reciprocal encounter between psychoanalytic therapist and patient, taking the reader into the psychoanalytic therapy room and giving detailed examples of how the interaction between patient and therapist takes place. The book argues that the therapist must capture both nonverbal affects and unsymbolized experiences, proposing a distinction between structuralized and actualized affects, and covering key topics such as transference, countertransference and enactment. It emphasizes the unconscious meaning in the here-and-now, as well as the need for affirmation to support more classical styles of intervention. The book integrates object relational and structural perspectives, in a theoretical position called relational oriented character analysis. It argues the patient’s ways-of-being constitute relational strategies carrying implicit messages – a "subtext" – and provides detailed examples of how to capture this underlying dialogue. Packed with detailed clinical examples and displaying a unique interplay between clinical observation and theory, this wide-ranging book will appeal to psychotherapists, psychoanalysts and clinical psychologists in practice and in training.
