Die Familientherapie hat seit ihrer Entstehung in den 1960er-Jahren Höhen und Tiefen innerhalb der psychotherapeutischen Landschaft erlebt. Ihr Aufschwung in den 1970er-Jahren war stark geprägt durch die charismatischen Gründerfiguren und den damaligen gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen, die die Familie, und nicht mehr nur den Einzelnen, in den Fokus psychotherapeutischer Arbeit rückten. In der Folge zeichnete sich ein eher stiefmütterliches Dasein familientherapeutischer Gedanken in der Psychoanalyse ab. Seit Beginn der Kinderanalyse steht die Bedeutung der Eltern bzw. Familie für die Behandlung des Kindes zur Diskussion. Klare Abgrenzungen der jeweiligen psychotherapeutischen Methode kennzeichnen den Diskurs bis heute. Familientherapeutisches Arbeiten ist geprägt vom gesellschaftlichen Kontext und dessen familiärer Bewertung. Die Familientherapie integriert gesellschaftliche Veränderungsprozesse und die daraus sich stets neu konstituierenden Familienformen in ihr psychotherapeutisches Arbeiten. Ein Anliegen des Buches ist die Darstellung und Hervorhebung familientherapeutischen Arbeitens in der Behandlung von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Hierbei sollen die Grenzen wie auch die sinnvolle Ergänzung der psychotherapeutischen Methode beschrieben und durch Fallbeispiele veranschaulicht werden.

Originally published in 1981, this study is the outcome of a clinical workshop based in the Adolescent Department at the Tavistock Clinic; its members at the time shared a tradition and interest in applying psychoanalytic principles to the understanding of groups and institutions and believed in the crucial relevance of these in work with families. It is written with the general reader in mind as well as those who work specifically in the field of family therapy or psychoanalysis. The approach is based on two particular developments; that of Object Relations Psychoanalytic practice, derived especially from the work of Freud and Melanie Klein; and the application of this to the understanding of Group Relations following the work of W.R. Bion and others, such as A.K. Rice and Pierre Turquet. It thus embraces the idea of the family as a system and includes attempts to understand the processes involved in such a system. But, unlike other comparable approaches, this one implies working with the group dynamics of the family, especially in terms of the way the family members perceive and engage the therapists. The attempt is to create a space for the family to relive and think about conflicts as they emerge in the therapeutic setting. Analytic theory is matched by much clinical material, and a glossary defines the key concepts.

Auch wenn Sigmund Freud bereits Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts im Rahmen seiner Psychoanalyse einen Zusammenhang zwischen der Eltern-Kind-Beziehung und der Entwicklung des Kindes erklären konnte, entstanden Konzepte, welche gezielt ganze Familien untersuchen und behandeln, erst später. So veröffentlichte Horst-Eberhard Richter 1963 sein Werk „Eltern, Kind und Neurose“, in welchem er sein, auf eigenen Untersuchungen basierendes Konzept über neurosefördernde Elterneinflüsse auf das Kind vorstellte. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Modells, welches im Allgemeinen den psychoanalytischen Familientherapien zugeordnet wird, steht eine von Richter entwickelte Rollentheorie, welche das Eltern-Kind-Verhältnis beschreibt. Als weitere wichtige Persönlichkeit ist Helm Stierlin zu nennen, der mit seinem familientherapeutischen Ansatz die systemischen Familientherapien vertritt. Stierlin hat in seinem 1975 erschienenen Buch „Von der Psychoanalyse zur Familientherapie“ und anderen Werken ebenfalls einen Ansatz entworfen, mit dem sich problematische Familienbeziehungen untersuchen und therapieren lassen. Interessanterweise haben sich beide familientherapeutische Konzepte aus der Psychoanalyse, welche sich auf das seelische Leben und Erleben eines Individuums konzentriert, entwickelt. Daraus ergeben sich nun verschiedene Fragen: Welche Verbindung besteht zwischen den beiden Formen der Familientherapie und der Psychoanalyse? Welche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede lassen sich beim Vergleich der beiden familientherapeutischen Konzepte feststellen? Wie beschreiben die einzelnen Ansätze den Einfluss der Eltern-Kind-Beziehung auf die Entwicklung des Kindes? Welche Formen des elterlichen Verhaltens können zu einer Neurose beim Kind führen? Kann die Entstehung einer Neurose dementsprechend auch durch die Erziehung verhindert werden? Um diese Fragen zu beantworten wird zunächst die Psychoanalyse grundlegend vorgestellt. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf der psychosexuellen Entwicklung des Kindes und der Entstehung von Neurosen liegen. Im Anschluss daran werden die beiden familientherapeutischen Modelle vorgestellt und sowohl mit der Psychoanalyse als auch untereinander verglichen. Abgerundet wird diese Arbeit durch einige allgemeinere Überlegungen über neurosefördernde bzw. -verhindernde Elterneinflüsse und die Konsequenzen, die diese Kenntnisse für die Erziehung eines Kindes haben sollten.
