Summary: The Inside Australia project, by internationally acclaimed British Artist Antony Gormley, is an installation of 51 abstracted black steel figures standing in a 7 square kilometre area of Lake Ballard, near the goldfields town of Menzies, northwest of Perth and commissioned by the Perth International Arts Festival. Gormley calls his sculptures on Lake Ballard "Insiders", a bringing together of two notions of the interior; that which lies within the human being and that which lies at the interior of the continent. He sees the work 'as a field of antennae', reflexive rather than representational, allowing what is already there to be perceived and felt. Many Western Australians contributed by having their naked bodies scanned. These scans were used as the basis for making accurate concentrated forms, which allow attitudes and emotions embedded in posture to be revealed. Offair, ABC, 17/11/04, (50 min.).

Romania S Abandoned Children written by Charles A. Nelson and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-06 with Psychology categories.

This “landmark study of child development” examines the devastating effects of early childhood institutionalization (Avshalom Caspi, Duke University). In 1989, the fall of Romania's Ceausescu regime left approximately 170,000 children in impoverished institutions across the country. This crisis prompted the most comprehensive study to date on the effects of institutionalization on a child’s brain development, behavior, and psychological functioning. Romania's Abandoned Children documents this landmark study, and the devastating toll paid by children who are deprived of responsive care, social interaction, stimulation, and psychological comfort. Launched in 2000, the Bucharest Early Intervention Project was a rigorously controlled investigation of foster care as an alternative to institutionalization. Examining a total of 136 abandoned infants and toddlers, researchers randomly assigned half of them to foster care, while the other half stayed in Romanian institutions. Over a twelve-year span, both groups were assessed for physical growth, cognitive functioning, brain development, and social behavior. Data from a third group of children raised by their birth families were collected for comparison. The study found that the institutionalized children were severely impaired, but that the sooner they were placed into foster care, the better their recovery. Combining scientific, historical, and personal narratives in a gripping, often heartbreaking, account, Romania's Abandoned Children highlights the need to help the millions of parentless children living in institutions throughout the world.

D. W. Winnicott (1896-1971) was one of the giants of child psychiatry and analysis. Whether writing or talking, he always argued eloquently for an increased sensitivity to children, their development and their needs. His books such as Playing and Reality and The Family and Individual Development, are now considered classics in the field of child development. Deprivation and Delinquency is an invaluable compilation of his papers, talks, letters and lectures between 1930 and 1970, centred on the theme of the relationship between antisocial behaviour, or more chronically delinquency, and childhood experiences of deprivation. Linking passages by the editors set the historical context for four sections focusing on children under stress, the nature and origin of antisocial tendency, the practical management of difficult children, and individual therapy with the antisocial personality.

The implications of early experience for children's brain development, behavior, and psychological functioning have long absorbed caregivers, researchers, and clinicians. The 1989 fall of Romania's Ceausescu regime left approximately 170,000 children in 700 overcrowded, impoverished institutions across Romania, and prompted the most comprehensive study to date on the effects of institutionalization on children's well-being. Romania's Abandoned Children, the authoritative account of this landmark study, documents the devastating toll paid by children who are deprived of responsive care, social interaction, stimulation, and psychological comfort. Launched in 2000, the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP) was a rigorously controlled investigation of foster care as an alternative to institutionalization. Researchers included 136 abandoned infants and toddlers in the study and randomly assigned half of them to foster care created specifically for the project. The other half stayed in Romanian institutions, where conditions remained substandard. Over a twelve-year span, both groups were assessed for physical growth, cognitive functioning, brain development, and social behavior. Data from a third group of children raised by their birth families were collected for comparison. The study found that the institutionalized children were severely impaired in IQ and manifested a variety of social and emotional disorders, as well as changes in brain development. However, the earlier an institutionalized child was placed into foster care, the better the recovery. Combining scientific, historical, and personal narratives in a gripping, often heartbreaking, account, Romania's Abandoned Children highlights the urgency of efforts to help the millions of parentless children living in institutions throughout the world.

Soul Murder written by Leonard Shengold and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-03-20 with Psychology categories.

To abuse or neglect a child, to deprive the child of his or her own identity and ability to experience joy in life, is to commit soul murder. Soul murder is the perpetration of brutal or subtle acts against children that result in their emotional bondage to the abuser and, finally, in their psychic and spiritual annihilation. In this compelling, disturbing, and superbly readable book, Dr. Leonard Shengold, clinical professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, explores the devastating psychological effects of this trauma inflicted on a shocking number of children. Drawing on a lifetime of clinical experience and wide-ranging reading in world literature, Dr. Shengold examines the ravages of soul murder in the adult lives of his patients as well as in the lives and works of such seminal writers as George Orwell, Dickens, Chekhov, and Kipling. One hopeful note in this saga of pain is that a terrible childhood can, if survived, be a source of strength, as Dr. Shengold finds in the cases of Dickens and Orwell. Provocatively original in its approach to literature and psychology, unsettling in its vivid portrayal of the darker side of human nature, far-reaching in its conclusions, Soul Murder will stand alongside such works as Alice Miller's The Drama of the Gifted Child as one of the most important studies of the psyche to appear in decades.
