The healthcare industry has been the center of attention recently as it continues to have a major impact on private and public organizations, government institutions, and consumers. An increasing number of requests for healthcare has led to the implementation of new policies and reform proposals that are challenging as they can have a simultaneous impact on different categories of users. As many health, individual, and organizational activities continue to grow and are conducted in the general environment, new vulnerabilities have emerged that have led to the need to study the system from a different angle. The nature, source, and complexity of healthcare is not always clear, and many times health issues are underestimated. The Handbook of Research on Healthcare Standards, Policies, and Reform examines the complex issues, various problems, and innovative solutions that are linked to healthcare standards, policies, and reform. This comprehensive reference work provides important knowledge that impacts healthcare improvement from the perspective of multiple disciplines, adding innovation value to solving health issues. Covering topics such as health protection, psychological health, and healthcare technology, it is an essential resource for academicians, healthcare practitioners, researchers, healthcare scientists, professional bodies, professors and students of higher education, and policymakers.

Family caregiving affects millions of Americans every day, in all walks of life. At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.

Frailty represents an important challenge for aging populations. As a concept it is full of 'known unknowns' such as which mechanisms lead to frailty and how it is best managed. In order to examine these circumstances, the new science of understanding and managing frailty requires an appropriate framing of the problem. This publication investigates the biology and management of frailty and its social aspects. It considers these and related questions: How can we recognize frailty? How does an understanding of frailty increase our comprehension of the aging process? What are its implications for health care systems, including primary care, hospitals and rehabilitation? How will a growing number of frail older adults affect society more generally? The book focuses on frailty as a state of vulnerability, which is related to aging, but which can occur across the life course, and aims to improve the life of frail people and those around them. The book is highly recommended to researchers in aging, health science researchers, health care professionals and anyone interested in the understanding of the aging process.

Worldwide there is a generalized trend toward aged societies. Between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%. As life expectancy continues to increase and natality rates lower, not only the composition of countries will change, but also its health landscape. However, an increased life expectancy does not necessarily mean a healthy life. In most high-income countries more than 20% of those years are lived in ill health due to chronic conditions caused by non-communicable diseases, which compromises functional ability and well-being - key components of healthy aging. In this way, not only people's lives but also societal structures are being affected. Based on the life-course approach to healthy aging, aging starts from conception. In this regard, the promotion of healthy aging requires preventive strategies that enhance capacities during growth and development, maintain them for as long as possible after maturity, and slow down their rate of decline. Moreover, considering healthy aging across the lifespan entails focusing on different factors, life opportunities, and choices that might significantly influence health status, lifestyle as well as health and social inequalities in older age, and challenges the focus of most research on the topic, which exclusively investigates the effect of influences operating in the later stages of life.

The present and future of our society are shaped by an ever-increasing proportion of old and very old people. The Berlin Aging Study is one of the largest interdisciplinary efforts to explore old age and aging. Unique aspects of the Berlin Aging Study are the spectrum of scientific disciplines involved, the range of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary research topics, the focus on very old age (70 to over 100 years), and the empirical reference to a representative heterogenous urban population. The study's first cross-sectional findings on intellectual abilities, self and personality, social relationships, physical health, functional capacity, medical treatment, mental disorders such as depression and dementia, socioeconomic conditions, activities, everyday competence, subjective well-being, and gender differences are reported in depth in this book. The study was carried out in the context of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences study group on 'Aging and Social Development'. The authors primarily conduct their research at the Berlin Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the Free University of Berlin, and the Humboldt University, Berlin.
