Physiological signals have emerged as a promising avenue for understanding human behavior and cognition, particularly in real-world settings (Ananthan et al., 2024). Recent advancements in wearable sensor technology have enabled continuous monitoring of various physiological markers, such as electrodermal activity and heart rate, providing insights into individuals' emotional and cognitive states. (Gibilisco et al., 2018) One of the key applications of these psychophysiological advancements lies in understanding student engagement and learning dynamics. Researchers have found that physiological signals can serve as effective indicators of academic stress, anxiety, and engagement, complementing traditional self-report and observational measures. (Jiménez-Mijangos et al., 2022) (Ananthan et al., 2024) By monitoring students' physiological responses across different courses, researchers have identified unique patterns that enhance our understanding of intra-individual variations in cognitive and emotional responses to various learning environments. (Ananthan et al., 2024) These applications extend beyond the classroom, with the potential to inform clinical and social neuroscience research. Clinicians and researchers have explored the use of feedback techniques, such as neurofeedback, to allow participants to self-regulate their physiological and mental states, leading to promising results in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders (Orndorff-Plunkett et al., 2017). Despite these advancements, there are still significant challenges in bringing physiological detection systems into real-world settings, such as the classroom. The use of non-invasive, wearable sensors is critical to minimize the intrinsic stress caused by instrumentation, ensuring that the physiological responses captured reflect the natural state of the individuals.

Over a quarter century ago, Flanders Dunbar, in her 1954 compendium on "Emotion and Bodily Changes," surveyed over 5,000 references on psychoso matic interrelationships, including a literature on psychic factors in gastrointesti nal disorders dating back to 1845. The title of the present volume suggests a line of descent from these early initiatives, but important changes are in the making. Indeed, the form and substance of long overdue reformulations are clearly re flected in the scholarly contributions which enhance this report of the 1980 Munich symposium proceedings. Traditional psychosomatic approaches to understanding the gastrointestinal system and its functional disorders have been based in large part on two virtually unchallenged assumptions. In the first instance, unobserved (indeed unobserva ble) "psychological processes" have been considered causally related to disease onset and/or to fluctuations in the course of the disease. And secondly, it has been assumed that "psychotherapeutic" interventions for disease management should be designed to alter these hypothesized "psychic" antecedents. More recently, however, a new paradigm for analyzing the relationships involving disordered physiological functions and behavioral interactions has been devel oped within the framework of what has been termed behavioral medicine. The conceptual boundaries of this relatively new approach to behavioral physiology have not yet been firmly established, but the major differences between the new "behavioral" model and the traditional "psychosomatic" model are brought into sharp relief by the experimental and clinical contributions to the present volume.

This is a manual on how to do applied psychophysiological research and why. It is timely and necessary. Timely because applied psychophysiology has come to the attention of providers and the public who would like to benefit from the applications. In medicine many current publications address translational research. Applied psychophysiology is translational research in the area of psychophysiology. It is necessary because the validity of many claims of benefits for technologies and procedures are limited to testimonials and poorly designed research. It is necessary because there are few resources to specifically guide a researcher who undertakes applied psychophysiology. The goals of applied psychophysiology such as producing a useful effect are much different than the goals of basic research which are focused on validating a theoretical model. Different tools are required to attain those goals. Dr. Sherman is a seasoned psychophysiologist with extensive publications in basic and applied research. He has been a leader in professional societies fostering applied psychophysiology and he has refined the teachability of this material through years of teaching students in a graduate program of applied psychophysiology. It begins immediately with cardinal rules for establishing credibility when you are preparing a clinical presentation or attending to a clinical presentation. The literature relating to the learned control of autonomic processes, especially cardiovascular processes demonstrating that the activities of visceral response systems may be modifi ed by operant reinforcement and biofeedback procedures, has grown exponentially. This research seems to show behavioral properties in the cardiovascular system that were previously believed to be exclusive attributes of the somatic response systems; the implications of this for possible therapeutic use have received widespread publicity. Questions remained unanswered-about the nature of "voluntary" control and the conditions necessary for establishing it, the reciprocal effects of conditioned changes in cardiovascular and psychological or behavioral functioning, the use of cardiovascular events to index behavioral states, and the principles and techniques whereby operant conditioning of the cardiovascular system can be clinically applied.
