Child life is a profession that draws on the insights of history, sociology, anthropology and psychology to serve children and families in many critical stress points in their lives, but especially when they are ill, injured or disabled and encounter the hosts of caregivers and institutions that collaborate to make them well. Children and their families can become overwhelmed by the task of understanding and navigating the healthcare environment and continue to face challenges through their daily encounters. It is the job of child life professionals to provide care and guidance in these negotiations to serve as culture brokers, interpreters of the healthcare apparatus to family and child and the child to medical professionals. A number of factors converged to prompt this volume at this particular time. For several years, supervisors in predoctoral and internship programs have noted the need for a compendium of selected articles to illustrate the range of research and practice of pediatric psychology. Although the field is still relatively young, the many new pediatric psychologists in recent years might benefit from a perspective on the history and development of the psychological concepts, the organizational home in the Society of Pediatric Psychology (Section V of the Division of Clinical Psychology of the Ameri can Psychological Association), and its publication archive, Journalof Pe diatric Psychology. Such "classics" help capture the richness and excitement that portrays the field. Noting the continuing need for resources to serve the specialty, the Ex ecutive Committee of the Society of Pediatric Psychologyauthorized the spon sorship of publication of the HandbookofPediatric Psychology (Routh, 1988) as a synthesis of the field by expert chapter authors. The Society then ap pointed a committee led by C. Eugene Walker and Annette M. La Greca to develop a series of biennial volumes entitled Advancesin Pediatric Psychology. A number of discussions among the editorial board of the Journal and with Plenum Publishing Corporation, the Journal's publisher, recognized the value of articles carefully selected to exemplify how pediatric psychology is done.

The Hospitalized Child: Psychosocial Issues is a comprehensive, abstracted bibliography focusing on the behavioral and developmental consequences of short-term, long-term or recurrent hospitalization during childhood and adolescence. The emphasis of this volume is on the psychosocial issues related to the hospital experience/environ ment, rather than on adaptation to or coping with particular disease states or terminal illness. Publications are included which identify potential problems of hospitalization, coping mechanisms of patients, parents, and staff, and possible solutions. For example, the articles covered in this volume discuss the trauma which may result from the child's separation from mother/family/peers, anxiety over medical pro cedures, unfamiliarity of the hospital environment, absence from school, restrictions on physical activity, forced dependency and con cerns over body image. The search for solutions to adaptation diffi culties often results in the creation of new hospital programs. These too are reviewed in this bibliography. Examples include child-life programs, the care-by-parent units, foster grandparent/surrogate mother programs, and hospital or surgical orientation programs. New therapeutic approaches have been attempted in a hospital setting, in cluding bibliotherapy, puppet therapy, play therapy and mutual-story telling techniques. Each of these innovations is represented in the bibliography. Further, hospital redesign schemes are reviewed, in cluding the feasibility of separate adolescent wards. And finall~, modification of hospital policy has been examined, including estab lishment of liberal visiting privileges, parent rooming-in, day v vi PREFACE surgery, and improved communication between patient, parent, and hos pital staff.

The report, presented from a nursing point of view, looks at the care of children in European hospitals including official policies, regulations, laws and daily nursing care practices. The first chapter provides a rationale for the study with a review of the literature and a presentation of the conceptual framework of the study. The second chapter looks at previous research into the care of children in hospitals including the effects of a hospital stay on the child and children's reaction to stress. Considered next is what the hospital should offer in the areas of daily care, organization of the hospital unit, emotional support to parents, and emotional support to the child. The fourth chapter outlines the methods and procedures for the study and the fifth details the results. Seventeen recommendations include the following: a parent should be able to care for a child in hospital without losing his or her job or income; policies should encourage alternatives to hospital admission whenever possible; children under 15 should be admitted to children's units only; rooming in facilities for a parent should be provided free of charge; and, every child should have an individual nurse assigned during the hospital stay.
