La conception médicale actuelle de la maladie asthmatique chez l’enfant est multifactorielle. Elle admet l’existence de « facteurs psychiques » qui restent toutefois mal connus. A partir de sa pratique de psychothérapies psychanalytiques qui permettent une étude clinique prolongée, l’auteur explore la qualité des défenses psychiques, par exemple névrotiques, mises en œuvre ou au contraire se révélant insuffisantes ou défaillantes. Il en conclut, à la suite des travaux de Pierre Marty, Michel Fain et Léon Kreisler, qu’il n’y a pas d’uniformité structurale de l’enfant asthmatique mais — et c’est l’objet de ce livre de les mettre en évidence — des modalités relationnelles et identificatoires assez fréquentes pour être considérées comme caractéristiques. Cet ouvrage montre ainsi l’apport de la psychanalyse à la connaissance d’un déséquilibre psychosomatique chez l’enfant.
