In The Craft of a Good Scribe, Steve Vinson offers a comprehensive study of the Demotic Egyptian First Tale of Setne Khaemwas (Third Century BCE), the first to appear since 1900. "First Setne" is the most important extant Demotic literary text, and among the most important fictional compositions from any period of ancient Egypt. The tale, which is by turns lurid, tragic and ultimately comic, deals with Setne's theft of a magic book written by the god Thoth himself, and subsequently Setne's punishment through a hallucinatory encounter with the ghostly femme fatale Tabubue. Vinson provides a new textual edition and commentary, and explores the tale's cultural background, its modern reception, and approaches to its interpretation as a work of literature.

Written to celebrate the centennial of the Sphinx's arrival in Philadelphia, The Sphinx That Traveled to Philadelphia tells the fascinating story of the colossal sphinx that is a highlight of the Penn Museum's Egyptian galleries and an iconic object for the Museum as a whole. The narrative covers the original excavations and archaeological history of the Sphinx, how it came to Philadelphia, and the unexpected ways in which the Sphinx's story intersects with the history of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Museum just before World War I. The book features ample illustrations—photographs, letters, newspaper stories, postcards, maps, and drawings—drawn largely from the extensive materials in the Museum Archives. Images of related artifacts in the Penn Museum's Egyptian collection and other objects from the Egyptian, Near East, and Mediterranean Sections (many not on view and some never before published), as well as pieces in museums in the United States, Europe, and Egypt, place the story of the Penn Museum Sphinx in a wider context. The writing style is informal and text is woven around the graphics that form the backbone of the narrative. The book is designed to be of interest to a wide audience of adult readers but accessible and engaging to younger readers as well.

A diverse collection of fiction and nonfiction literature from across the Arabic-speaking world. Cultural Journeys into the Arab World provides a fascinating window into Arab culture and society through the voices of its own writers and poets. Organized thematically, the anthology features more than fifty texts, including poems, essays, stories, novels, memoirs, eyewitness accounts, and life histories, by leading male and female authors from across the Arabic-speaking world. Each theme is explored in several genres, both fiction and nonfiction, and framed by a wealth of contextual information that places the literary texts within the historical, political, cultural, and social background of the region. Spanning a century of Arab creative writing—from the “dean of Arabic letters” Taha Hussein to the Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz and the celebrated poet Adonis—the anthology offers unforgettable journeys into the rich and dynamic realm of Arab culture. Representing a wide range of settings, viewpoints, and socioeconomic backgrounds, the characters speak of their conditions, aspirations, struggles, and achievements living in complex societies marked by tensions arising from the persistence of older traditions and the impact of modernity. Their myriad voices paint a vivid and intimate portrait of contemporary Arab life in the Middle East, revealing the common humanity of a region of vital significance in world affairs.

Release Your Inner Egyptian Scribe! Can you imagine yourself writing on a papyrus like an Ancient Egyptian scribe? In Ancient Egypt, the scribes were the learned, wise ones and were greatly respected. Each of these notebooks is filled with 80 pages that look like ancient papyrus! Now you, too, can write like an Egyptian scribe when you use these notebooks as a diary or travel journal, for class notes, or even to practice writing hieroglyphs yourself. The pages are unlined, but papyrus paper was created by laying out strips of papyrus, so those strip marks can be a guide for writing evenly. You can write with a normal ballpoint pen, felt-tip, or calligraphy pen - just like any normal paper. The spine of each volume is a different color for easy reference, and they create a pleasing variety of colors on your bookshelf. The cover of this 80-page 7"x 10" notebook is glossy. This volume: God Ptah is No. 9 in the Egyptian Gods & Goddesses Notebooks series. God Ptah, the "Lord of Truth," was the god of Memphis, the capital during the Old Kingdom Pyramid Age. The Memphite priests were highly sophisticated in their wisdom. The ancient text says, Ptah "created the world with his heart and tongue" - expressing what was in his heart brought the world into being. Perhaps for this reason, he was the "patron saint" of the artisans and craftsmen who created the beautiful statues, painted wall reliefs, jewelry, and other crafts. His consort is the powerful lioness goddess, Sekhmet. The pages of these beautiful notebooks await your insights, creativity, and wisdom! A perfect gift for anyone who loves Egypt, both adults and kids!
