The various and different Middle Eastern countries are addressing new key reform and governance reform processes but also administration and policy issues of enduring importance; decentralization and local government, non-profit organizations, political culture, and reform of the policy process. This book provides assessment of national strategies for reform in public administration and policy, how these strategies have fared in implementation; and what challenges must be overcome to achieve real and sustainable progress. Seven country case studies will explore the overall policy-making process from a critical perspective and consider how it could be strengthened. Four cases will deal with the controversial issues of decentralization of power and decision-making. Two cases will address the role of civil society in the policymaking and reform process. Introductory and concluding chapters will place these discussions in context and draw the primary lessons for policy-makers. The main objectives of the book are to present different examples of specific public policy and administration, as well as governance issues in the Middle East so that policymakers (both in the region and the world who are interested in the Middle East), as well as practitioners, scholars and graduate students can utilize the book as a study guide to better understand various dynamics in governance in the Middle East. This approach will enable the volume to bridge global perspectives on governance development with regional perspectives and experience, bringing shared expertise, intellectual inquisitiveness, and experience in the professional practice of public policy and administration to bear on these common challenges.

This book examines the status of public administration in eight countries—the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan, and Libya—in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This volume explores the issues, perspectives, traditions, and cultures that shape the operation of public administration in the region. This book also offers critical narratives on how the region’s governments manage the state and statecrafts regarding their governance design. It reflects on the multiplicity of public administration structures, functions, processes, and procedures, as well as reform schemes, which are critical in achieving good governance to continuously improve the human condition in the MENA region. Public Administration in the Middle East and North Africa will be of interest to scholars, practitioners, and students concerned with the ways in which technological change, knowledge accumulation, and dissemination can increase a state’s effective governance capacity. Foreword by B. Guy Peters, University of Pittsburgh is freely available to download on the Routledge website.

This volume considers how local, national, and global crises with differing durations, sizes, and impacts challenge the public sector to respond. Within the public administration and policy disciplines, there has been limited recognition about the nature of, linkages among, and the response options for crises and polycrises, when more than one crisis, emergency, disaster, or catastrophe (whether human-caused or natural) simultaneously impacts citizens in one geographical location. This handbook gathers experts from different fields to explore how each crisis challenges human capacity, information technology, and communication capabilities, and how public leaders must respond. These expert contributions are grouped within five thematic sections: Structures in Crisis: A North-South Dialogue, to engage national and global perspectives on how political, social, and economic structures respond during crises Agents in Crisis: A Cross-Actor Dialogue, on how agents respond to crises Human Capital and Information Technology in Crisis, exploring how these resources interact during crises Public Sector Communication in Crisis, examining issues of government and governance in effective crisis communication Practitioners in Crisis, a reminder to the discipline that important context and realities are missed if practitioner realities are overlooked. Chapters in the book engage 23 countries and one overseas dependency along with 14 crisis events. Eighteen chapters are focused on one crisis event while ten chapters directly or indirectly engage polycrises. As crises and polycrises become a constancy of our time, this volume will be of great interest to students, researchers, and practitioners of public administration and public policy.

Routledge Handbook On Contemporary Egypt written by Robert Springborg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-30 with History categories.

Investigating key features of contemporary Egypt, this volume includes Egypt’s modern history, politics, economics, the legal system, environment, and its media and modes of cultural expression. It examines Egypt’s capacities to meet developmental challenges, ranging from responding to globalization and regional competition to generating sufficient economic growth and political inclusion to accommodate the interests and demands of a rapidly growing population. The macrohistory of Egypt is complemented by the microhistories of specific institutions and processes that constitute separate sections in this handbook. The chapters revolve around political economy: it is shaped by the people and their abilities, political and legal institutions, organization of the economy, natural and built environments, and culture and communication. Politics has been overwhelmingly authoritarian and coercive since the military seized power in 1952; consequently, the contributions address both the causes and consequences of unbalanced civil–military relations, military rule, and persisting authoritarianism in the political society. This multidisciplinary handbook serves a dual purpose of introducing readers to Egypt’s history and contemporary political economy and as a comprehensive key resource for postgraduate students and academics interested in modern Egypt.
