"Sound management of the machinery of government is at the core of a well-functioning state. Written by an author with a wide range of experience in international affairs, this introductory text addresses both the commonalities and diversity of administrative practice around the world. Exploring developed countries as well as developing and transitional economies, it provides strong conceptual foundations combined with nuts-and-bolts "how to" topics, such as public personnel management, public procurement, and public budgeting, supported by data and concrete illustrations. The book is organized around three important themes: the roles, size, and organizational architecture of government; the management of public finances, personnel, and procurement; and the interface between government and society, including the delivery of public services. A concluding chapter summarizes lessons learned and offers possible paths to improve the management of the public sector in sustainable ways. Running the Government will serve as a core text for graduate courses in public administration and as a supplementary text for undergraduate and graduate courses in political science, public economics, and international affairs. It may also serve as an accessible reference for civil service training courses around the globe"--

The Oxford Handbook Of Global Policy And Transnational Administration written by Diane Stone and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-10 with Political Science categories.

Global policy making is unfurling in distinctive ways above traditional nation-state policy processes. New practices of transnational administration are emerging inside international organizations but also alongside the trans-governmental networks of regulators and inside global public private partnerships. Mainstream policy and public administration studies have tended to analyse the capacity of public sector hierarchies to globalize national policies. By contrast, this Handbook investigates new public spaces of transnational policy-making, the design and delivery of global public goods and services, and the interdependent roles of transnational administrators who move between business bodies, government agencies, international organizations, and professional associations. This Handbook is novel in taking the concepts and theories of public administration and policy studies to get inside the black box of global governance. Transnational administration is a multi-actor and multi-scalar endeavour having manifestations, depending on the policy issue or problems, at the local, urban, sub-regional, sub-national, regional, national, supranational, supra-regional, transnational, international, and global scales. These scales of 'local' and 'global' are not neatly bounded and nested spaces but are articulated together in complex patterns of policy activity. These transnational patterns represent a reinvigoration of public administration and policy studies as the Handbook authors advance their analysis beyond the methodological nationalism of the nation-state.

This book applies established analytical concepts such as influence, authority, administrative styles, autonomy, budgeting and multilevel administration to the study of international bureaucracies and their political environment. It reflects on the commonalities and differences between national and international administrations and carefully constructs the impact of international administrative tools on policy making. The book shows how the study of international bureaucracies can fertilize interdisciplinary discourse, in particular between International Relations, Comparative Government and Public Administration. The book makes a forceful argument for Public Administration to take on the challenge of internationalization.
