The authors, Hans & Annemarie Bleiker, have over 20 years been doing research on the role of citizen participation (CP) in getting important -- but controversial -- public projects & programs implemented. They began their research in the 1960s at MIT's Urban Systems Laboratory. They tried to figure out why some administrators (they call them Implementation Geniuses) almost always implement their proposals -- no matter how controversial -- when their colleagues have their proposals torpedoed by opponents, be they internal or external opponents. They found that Implementation Geniuses are so much more effective managers than their typical counterparts because they approach CP very differently. They don't use it to develop support: instead they use it in working with their opponents.Specifically, they use CP to develop informed Consent. And that, the authors define as:"the Grudging Willingness of Opponents to (grudgingly) Go Along with a Course of Action that they -- basically -- are Opposed to". This handbook takes the poorly understood, fuzzy subject of public involvement & organizes it into an orderly, understandable set of concepts.

Handbook Of Public Participation In Impact Assessment written by Tanya Burdett and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-28 with Reference categories.

This Handbook provides a clear overview of how to achieve meaningful public participation in impact assessment (IA). It explores conceptual elements, including the democratic core of public participation in IA, as well as practical challenges, such as data sharing, with diverse perspectives from 39 leading academics and practitioners. Critically examining how different engagement frameworks have evolved over time, this Handbook underlines the ways in which tokenistic approaches and wider planning and approvals structures challenge the implementation of meaningful public participation. Contributing authors discuss the impact of international agreements, legislation and regulatory regimes, and review commonly used professional association frameworks such as the International Association for Public Participation core values for practice. They demonstrate through case studies what meaningful public participation looks like in diverse regional contexts, addressing the intentions of being purposeful, inclusive, transformative and proactive. By emphasising the strength of community engagement, the Handbook argues that public participation in IA can contribute to enhanced democracy and sustainability for all. This visionary Handbook is an indispensable resource for IA public participation practitioners, including industry, consultants, government and non-government organisations as well as participants to IA processes. It will similarly be beneficial to IA researchers, academics, and managers in regulation, public administration and management.

Public Participation In Sustainability Science written by Bernd Kasemir and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-10 with Business & Economics categories.

This book discusses how citizens can participate more effectively in sustainability science and environmental policy debates. It discusses designs for participatory procedures, and experiences of their application to issues of global change. While the focus is on citizen participation, the involvement of specific stakeholders - including water managers and venture capitalists - is also addressed. The book describes how focus group methods were combined with the interactive use of computer models into new forms of participation, tested with six hundred citizens. The results are discussed in relation to other important topics, including greenhouse gas and water management. By combining this with an examination of issues of interactive governance and developing country participation, the book provides state-of-the-art, practical insights for students, researchers and policy makers alike.
