Teachers are trained in pedagogy, child development, and subject areas, but they do not receive extensive training in school law. Teachers are trained in pedagogy, child development, and subject areas, but they do not receive extensive training in school law. At the same time, they are often the frontline responders to situations that pose potential legal dilemmas. Legal Literacy for Public School Teachers aims to support educators in developing a better understanding of many aspects of school law, enabling them to make informed and appropriate decisions to avoid legal pitfalls as challenges arise, be in compliance with school policies, guard the rights of their students, and protect their own rights as public school employees. The Education Law Association's Legal Literacy for Public School Teachers-a specially adapted publication derived from its top-selling text, The Principal's Legal Handbook-pools the experience and expertise of scholars and practitioners into one valuable resource. The editors and chapter authors are experts in school law from across the U.S., representing the diverse membership of the Education Law Association which includes practicing attorneys, education law professors, school leaders and teachers, and many others. Importantly, many of the authors of this book have been PK-12 teachers at some point in their careers. Although they are now education law scholars and attorneys, they understand how to translate the law to inform professionals who do not have a legal background. Each chapter highlights the most critical issues and provides practical recommendations. Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ) (School of Human and Social Studies), course: Education and Law, language: English, abstract: For many of education managers the phrase “law” immediately becomes an incomprehensible maze of acts, administrative policies and judicial decisions. Every situation that arises in a school is governed by laws, rules and regulations, and every educators needs to be familiar with these and respect the rights and responsibilities of all interested parties. Every education manager and educators also be familiar with and understand education law so that they can use it to enhance learning and teaching. An understanding of the legal framework starts with an understanding of what it meant by the notion of “law”. This concept forms part of the daily life of every person in all nations in the world. In many aspects of education, like legal issues that govern students, it can be said that it is the law that provides the best means that should be used in disciplining students. With this regard therefore, the law and regulatory issues dictate either in individual school or in all schools what is the best method of disciplining them Lines. In the early days, the management of education and more specifically schools in many countries was in the hands of the state government. This shows that the government at federal or regional level was responsible in determining educational funding, methods of disciplining teachers and students, and accreditation in schools. Whatever the case may be, in order to achieve the intended goal of education policy and plan of the country all individuals in a school should have freedom of speech but this is not what is happening in most countries as school administrators usually restricts students’ freedom of speech. It is of paramount importance that all educators and policy formulators should pay much attention to the law concerning education in order to make sure that the law is not bent in the process of providing education to citizens.

Challenging students to question the political and philosophical assumptions underlying the law, Education Law, Policy, and Practice promotes a depth of understanding about the key cases and statutes. The authors integrate the law with policy and practice, following related political, financial, and practical issues. The law is presented through a teachable mix of key cases and materials on the practice and political aspects of school law, and an effective macro organization helps place topics into an integrated framework. Each of the major issues in education law is discussed at length: the boundaries of public and private, church and state, relations; school governance and the tensions between federal power and local control; the rights and responsibilities of students and teachers; and the educational environment and its liabilities. “Practicums” in each section allow students to apply the law to realistic situations. Features: New cases: Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District; Fisher v. the University of Texas. A complete description and analysis of the brand new Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015. A series of key questions and answers that follow each major section, and are designed to provide formative and summative assessments of student learning outcomes.
