Excerpt from Publications of Societies: A Provisional List of the Publications of American Scientific, Literary, and Other Societies; From Their Organization It has been impracticable in the present work to follow a consistently systematic method of entry. In the case of each society the endeavor has been to give its correct official name, as well as cross-references from other names and from names of localities, and to include the date of its organization, the name and address of itspresent secretary or other representative, and its place of headquarters. Entries as a rule are chronological; series, however, precede individual volumes. Special attention is called to the growing importance of the publications of universities and colleges, and in this field the information supplied by Harvard and Yale universities presents a model of systematized arrangement. It is to be regretted that the information from other universities having such departments could not have been conformed to these excellent models; this, however, was rendered impossible from the fact that the Harvard and Yale lists came after the less satisfactory form had been adopted for the other universities. In some cases, such as the American anti-slavery Society and the United States Sanitary Commission, little more has been possible than to point out sources of information from which it is hoped an adequate bibliography may be obtained later. In recording the publications of societies it has been extremely difficult to draw the line between publications by societies and publications concerning societies but not issued by them. There is also not a little confusion as to series which have been discontinued and resumed, or of which the title has from time to time been changed. In the case of several series it has not been possible to obtain individual entries for the earlier numbers, and in the ease of others the representatives of the societies have utterly failed to respond to requests for information as to issues later than those scheduled. The list was intended to bring the publications up to the date of July, 1898, and systematic entry has not been attempted later than that date. It is to be hoped that this volume will make clear the way for a revision or a later publication, completing the nineteenth century record. Such an issue will not, however, be possible unless the present volume receives support in the way of subscriptions from libraries and others interested, and cooperation from librarians and society officers in filling gaps. The publication has been a labor of love on the part of the editor, who does not expect to obtain from it the actual return for the money outlay, but does hope that the deficit may not be so great as to preclude further publication on these lines. It is not intended to include in the American Catalogue for 1895-1900 an appendix covering publishing societies, its place being filled for the most part by the present fist. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Periodical Publications: Including the Serial Publications of Societies and Governments, in the Library of University College London This catalogue contains the titles of all the works in the College Library which are issued in a serial form. Some publications are included which are not, strictly speaking, issued as periodicals (e.g. the Publications of the Ray Society), and there are a few others the right of which to be classed as periodicals is doubtful: but in both these cases it has been thought better to include something which may not be a serial rather than to exclude a work which may be looked for in a catalogue of periodicals. Every periodical is entered under the first word (articles only excepted) in the title, and the entries are arranged strictly in alphabetical order. The only exceptions to this rule are the entries commencing with the word 'Mitteilungen' or 'Mittheilungen, ' in which case the discrepancy in spelling has been ignored. Where the title of a periodical changes, the second and any following titles are entered immediately after the original one, cross-references being made from the later titles to the number under which the periodical is catalogued. Cross-references from the names of editors have been made in those cases where the journal is usually known by the editor's name.
