Le nombre de musées en Suisse a été multiplié par huit au cours du siècle dernier et l'on en comptait 863 début 2001. Pour tenter de comprendre ce phénomène, les auteurs de cette étude ont cherché à identifier, par l'usage de questionnaires, le public actuel des musées suisses et de contribuer ainsi à une compréhension du sens de la visite muséale et du rôle du musée dans une société en mutation. Il s'est donc agi d'intégrer à la fois les points de vue du public et des responsables des musées. Quelle(s) fonction(s) remplit un musée? Quelles sont les attentes du public à cet égard? Des tensions surgissent-elles entre les tâches de conservation et d'animation/éducation? Quels sont les liens entre musée et identité? La visite muséale doit-elle être exclusivement envisagée comme une pratique élitaire, de classe ou de loisirs? Comment permet-elle la mise en relation du soi avec les autres? Les pistes contenues dans ce travail apportent quelques éléments complémentaires de réponses aux interrogations des responsables de musées et devraient leur permettre d'en tirer un bénéfice direct pour leurs futures expositions; en particulier identifier, partager, renforcer, puis précéder les attentes du public.

The Programme for the third Symposium on the International Art Trade and Law was developed by the Institute for International Business Law and Practice of the International Chamber of Commerce and its Chairman, Prof. Pierre Lalive who has also provided the Preface to this Volume. Under the auspices of the Institute, a Questionnaire was formulated and circulated. The collected materials were reproduced and distributed at the Symposium by the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce.
