One question that Not a Pipe Publishing has received many times since taking on Kamila Shamsie's challenge to make 2018 the Year of Publishing Women is "Why?" My response is, "Why not?" Why are some people so afraid of a Year of Publishing Women when we've already had Centuries of Publishing Men? When one looks at the 'classics' of literature that are taught in school, who do we see? We see William Shakespeare and George Orwell; Edgar Allen Poe and Leo Tolstoy; and the list of white men continues. In contrast, how many classic women authors are there? Only Jane Austen and the Bront sisters come to the forefront of most minds, with the occasional Mary Shelley or Virginia Woolf. It is an undeniable fact that the publishing industry had favored works by white men for centuries. This a result of the patriarchal, white-centric society that has thrived in most parts of the world. It is the result of a lack of equal rights and education, not a result of inherent talent. Yes, these male authors and books shaped the world; I don't disagree. However, I invite you to think about how many books by women and people of color could have also shaped the world if only they'd been given the tools, education, and time. I will step off my soap box now to say this: I am deeply grateful to Not a Pipe Publishing for taking on the Year of Publishing Women, and for giving me this project to lead. Companies like Not a Pipe and people like the Gormans give me hope for our world, because a diverse world that celebrates all of its voices is a better world. I have been so humbled by the many story submissions we received throughout the year, and I'm so grateful this short story project was a success. When I was selecting which stories to include in the anthology--not an easy series of decisions in the slightest--I kept thinking about a theme to center the anthology around, but I kept hitting a wall. All of these stories are as unique and individual as the authors who wrote them, and I struggled to come up with a unifying theme until I realized the strength behind each piece. You will notice that each one of them has a message or element of strength behind it that will blow you away and destroy any doubts you have about the power of women. No longer will women and people of color and members of other marginalized communities be kept silent. In this new study, Elizabeth Goldsmith continues her pursuit of issues treated in her earlier books on conversation, epistolary writing, and the female voice in literature. She examines how French women in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries first came to publish their private life stories; in doing so, she explores what the writers have to say about why they decide to write about themselves, what they choose to write, how they get their stories circulated and printed, and what they do to defend themselves against the threat to personal reputation and credibility that was implied by such public self-exposure. Goldsmith scrutinizes the autobiographical writing of six women, all of whom were, for different reasons, the objects of fairly intense publicity during their lifetime, at the historical moment when the idea of "publicity" via the printed word was still a new concept. Three of the women-Jeanne des Anges, Marie de l'Incarnation, and Jeanne Guyon-were charismatic religious figures whose writings were widely circulated. The other three writers-the sisters Hortense and Marie Mancini, and Madame de Villedieu-are more worldly, but like their spiritual counterparts, they undertook self-publication as a form of conversation with the world, and a way of participating in other forms of public discourse. Publishing Women's Life Stories in France, 1647-1720 considers the different forms that the life writing of these three women took: autobiographies; letter correspondences (which in four of the six cases have never before been published); trial transcripts; testimonials published as part of other authors' works; and written self-portraits that were circulated among friends. Women in Scholarly Publishing explores the under-researched topic of gender and scholarly publishing. Whilst often considered separately, the relationship between gender and scholarly publishing has been neglected. Bringing together experts across Applied Linguistics, this book brings to the fore the challenges and opportunities faced by female academics in both Anglophone and non-Anglophone contexts as they participate in the production and dissemination of knowledge. Contributors show how female scholars’ production and dissemination of knowledge intersects with gendered structures and disciplinary cultures in complex ways. As in other countries, the effects of commercialization in Spain are changing the direction of publishing. Arguing that women face a particularly complex situation because the inclusion of their work is still considered a novelty in a male-dominated field, Christine Henseler examines the strategies of Spanish women authors in the face of market forces. In a consumer economy that places books in supermarkets and mega-bookstores and in which novels are promoted and read more for entertainment than for their literary merit, women's books tend to be more highly regarded when they cater to feminist, erotic, or commercial niche markets. Henseler examines the visual creation of the seductive female body inside and outside the texts and the verbal application of this female figure on a narrative level in the works of authors including Paloma Díaz-Mas, Lourdes Ortiz, Cristina Peri Rossi, Esther Tusquets, Almudena Grandes, and Lucía Etxebarría. She looks at novels of seduction, award-winning novels, and novels sold on the basis of an author's prior reputation, as well as advertisements, literary prizes, and reviews. She also draws on interviews with authors to provide insider views of contemporary Spanish publishing.
