"Tenemos sobre los mexicanos tal superioridad de raza, de organización, de disciplina, moralidad y elevación de sentimientos, que pido a Su Excelencia informe al emperador que puede ya considerarme dueño de México." - El general Lorencez, antes de la batalla del Cinco de Mayo Sobre el Cinco de Mayo, dos grandes mitos prevalecen en los Estados Unidos: el primero, que la fecha marca la independencia de México; el segundo, que la celebración es una fiesta importada en época relativamente reciente por inmigrantes mexicanos. Ambas afirmaciones son tan falsas como un billete de noventa pesos. El Cinco de Mayo no marca la independencia de México (que se celebra el 16 de septiembre), sino la fecha de la batalla más importante en la historia de ese país, contra una Francia invasora. En cuanto a lo otro, la celebración no nació en México. Se comenzó a conmemorar en los Estados Unidos en los años 1860s, poco después de la Batalla de Puebla, cuando el vecino del sur todavía se hallaba ocupado por el ejército de Napoleón III. La fiesta del Cinco de Mayo es tan americana como el pay de manzana. La Batalla de Puebla tuvo lugar 150 kilómetros al oriente de la Ciudad de México, cuando los mexicanos llevaban ya cuarenta años siendo un nación independiente. Los contrincantes eran un ejército mexicano mal alimentado, mal equipado y sin experiencia, formado en buena parte por campesinos a quienes se les dio un fusil o un sable. Por el otro lado estaba la primera potencia militar del mundo. En la batalla de Puebla de 1862 se estaba jugando no sólo la integridad de México, sino enviando un mensaje decisivo a las potencias europeas en plena expansión colonial: el amanecer de un nuevo orden internacional. Un siglo y medio después, el Cinco de Mayo ha quedado establecido como motivo de fiesta y reunión de amigos en los Estados Unidos. Las calles se llenan de bailables, desfiles patrióticos, mariachis y comida mexicana. Se estima que en esa fecha los estadounidenses consumen 36 mil toneladas de aguacates, millones de bolsas de totopos y $735 millones de dólares en cerveza, eso sin contar las incontables margaritas, elaboradas con 127 millones de litros de tequila, bebida que todo el mundo relaciona correctamente con México. Lo anterior no se limita, por supuesto, a la comunidad hispana. Cada vez más personas de otros orígenes étnicos aprovechan ese día para conocer y reconocer la contribución de México a la cultura norteamericana... o simplemente para divertirse y beber más tequila que de costumbre. El propio gobierno de los Estados Unidos al más alto nivel se sumó a la celebración. A partir de los años 1980, el Cinco de Mayo se comenzó a celebrar con música de mariachi y bailes mexicanos en la Casa Blanca. ¿Por qué la sede del poder en Washington, quien a lo largo de la historia ha tenido una relación problemática con México, celebra el triunfo de los mexicanos en una guerra ajena? La razón es que la Batalla de Puebla no sólo pasó a formar parte de la epopeya de México, también influyó de manera indirecta en el desenlace de la Guerra Civil, y por tanto en la historia de los Estados Unidos. Sin olvidar por supuesto un dato significativo que cada Cinco de Mayo une a ambos países en estrecho abrazo: el general Ignacio Zaragoza, el vencedor de los franceses en Puebla, nació en Texas... aunque en el momento de su nacimiento esa provincia todavía pertenecía a México. Zaragoza nació siendo mexicano, pero nunca dejó de ser texano.

No struggle has been more contentious or of longer duration in Mexican national history than that between a centripetal power in the capital and the centrifugal federalism of the Mexican states. Much as they do in the United States, such tensions still endure in Mexico, despite the centralising effect of the Mexican Revolution of 1910–20. Timothy E. Anna turns his attention upon the crucial postindependence period of 1821–35 to understand both the theoretical and the practical causes of the development of this polarity. He attempts to determine how much influence can be ascribed to such causes as the model of the United States, the effect of European thinkers, and the shifting self-interest of various leaders and groups in Mexican society. The result is a nuanced and thoughtful analysis of the development of one of the defining characteristics of the Mexican nation: regional power and sovereignty of the state.
