"What Herrera-Anderson has done is lay bare the alma, the Latin soul. Her stories show how such nurture, encouragement and affirmation, at critical moments of childhood, help the human transcend the forces that could have kept one down. " - L. Griffiths, East Valley Tribune "This gem of a book manages to be as tender as it is devastating.Herrera's disarming honesty draws readers into her world, a world where pain and love share equal time. Many will see themselves in these stories, others may, for the first time, gain an inside look at into the ravages of poverty and the survival of the human spirit."- Dr. Ursula Casanova, Arizona State University

Goldilocks is vintage Coburn, the Coburn of Sweetheart, The Babysitter, and Love Nest. This is a story of a New England town where all the deals have been quietly cut, the cops have traded their souls to crime bosses, and the crime boss of crime bosses—a beautiful woman from the wrong side of the tracks—has married up, into the WASPs, and her name decorates ever corner and library in town. And into this quiet swamp with its smooth surface drops Goldilocks—tall and blond, with exquisite blue eyes, the new boy in town, and so vicious he makes the rest of them know that life before Goldilocks was like a fairy tale. Small wonder The New York Times crime book critic Newgate Callendar writes, “Natural storytellers are not too common but Mr. Coburn is one.” An angry yet still sexy widow becomes the prey of Vietnam vet Goldilocks, but he, too, gets caught in the web of evildoing and gets his just deserts, though not till the town is turned end to end. No question—Coburn can write up a storm.

'Highly recommended' Financial Times Today we know of only a single planet that hosts life: the Earth. But across a Universe of at least 100 billion possibly habitable worlds, surely our planet isn't the only one that, like the porridge Goldilocks sought, is just right for life? Astrobiologists search the galaxy for conditions that are suitable for life to exist, focusing on similar worlds located at the perfect distance from their Sun, within the aptly named 'Goldilocks Zone'. Such a place might have liquid water on its surface, and may therefore support a thriving biosphere. What might life look like on other worlds? It is possible to make best-guesses using facts rooted in science, and by studying 'extremophiles' – organisms such as the near-indestructible water bears, which can survive in the harshest conditions that Earth, and even space, can offer. Goldilocks and the Water Bears is a tale of the origins and evolution of life, and the quest to find it on other planets, on moons, in other galaxies, and throughout the Universe.

Once upon a time, there was a very cute and special little girl. She lived with her granny in a little wooden house in the forest. She had long golden locks and they shone like the flashes of the sun. For that reason, they called her Goldilocks. She had really bright eyes and a beautiful smile. She was always happy. Every day she picked up wild flowers on her way to school to give them to her teacher. One day, coming back from school, Goldilocks asked her granny to let her play for a while in the yard. Under the trees there was a lot of fresh breeze and the divine scent of field flowers. Her granny gave her permission but told her to be very careful not to stray to far from the house. Goldilocks took her doll, Rusty the dog, and her two little bunnies, which she fed with fresh herbs while she was picking up flowers for her granny. There were so many, really so many beautiful flowers, that without noticing, she was straying away from her home. When the sun was setting, she wanted to return but found herself surrounded by trees. She became nervous realizing that she didn't know the way back home. She sat and started thinking what would she do. The birds were starting to go back to their nests. The little girl thought of going back walking to where the birds were flying. She had the feeling that if she followed them, she would get back home. But instead of getting back home, Goldilocks arrived at a beautiful house. As she was tired and very thirsty, she knocked slowly on the door, to ask for a little bit of water. But no one answered. She knocked, and knocked again, this time, harder: knock, knock, knock, knock...

Pioneering novelist and short-story writer Nicholasa Mohr broke onto the literary scene of ethnic autobiography in the early 1970s, but it took another decade for other Puerto Rican women writers in the United States to follow the path that she cut. From the late 1970s on, a dynamic group of these writers have expanded the landscape of American literature. Kissing the Mango Tree is the first and only book to examine the works of the most popular Puerto Rican women writers from the perspective of feminist literary criticism. Rivera reconstructs the ethno-feminist aesthetic of Judith Ortiz Cofer, Sandra María Esteves, Nicholasa Mohr, Aurora Levins Morales, Rosario Morales, Esmeralda Santiago, and Luz María Umpierre-Herrera. In separate chapters dedicated to each of these writers, the author locates their works within the framework of feminist theory and literature, seeing them as "women with macho asserting their creative powers to record their own versions of their memories, to own their own bodies. . . They transform the way we look at the process of growing up and becoming a woman, at the relationship with our mothers and our daughters, at the fluidity of our lives, at our notions of nationhood . . ." This groundbreaking study is accompanied by a complete bibliography of the six writers' works and secondary sources of feminist, Latino, and ethno-poetic criticism and theory.

The Fairy Tale World is a definitive volume on this ever-evolving field. The book draws on recent critical attention, contesting romantic ideas about timeless tales of good and evil, and arguing that fairy tales are culturally astute narratives that reflect the historical and material circumstances of the societies in which they are produced. The Fairy Tale World takes a uniquely global perspective and broadens the international, cultural, and critical scope of fairy-tale studies. Throughout the five parts, the volume challenges the previously Eurocentric focus of fairy-tale studies, with contributors looking at: • the contrast between traditional, canonical fairy tales and more modern reinterpretations; • responses to the fairy tale around the world, including works from every continent; • applications of the fairy tale in diverse media, from oral tradition to the commercialized films of Hollywood and Bollywood; • debates concerning the global and local ownership of fairy tales, and the impact the digital age and an exponentially globalized world have on traditional narratives; • the fairy tale as told through art, dance, theatre, fan fiction, and film. This volume brings together a selection of the most respected voices in the field, offering ground-breaking analysis of the fairy tale in relation to ethnicity, colonialism, feminism, disability, sexuality, the environment, and class. An indispensable resource for students and scholars alike, The Fairy Tale World seeks to discover how such a traditional area of literature has remained so enduringly relevant in the modern world.
