"There was never an artist who came close to capturing horror and dread like Lee Brown Coye. He was master of the weird and grotesque illustration. Coye's sketches had the shape of nightmares."—Robert Weinberg, The Weird Tales Story "It was always my belief that a good drawing was a good drawing, whether it was in the archives of the Metropolitain Museum or in a pulp magazine."— Lee Brown Coye No other artist working in mid-century pulp fiction created work as twisted as Lee Brown Coye. By the 1970s, after surviving a life-threatening illness, Coye would outdo himself, creating lurid illustrations exclusive to rare privately published books and fanzines. With nearly one hundred gloriously rendered Coye-penned images, Pulp Macabre showcases Coye's final and darkest era, containing some of the most passionately ghoulish artwork ever made. Mike Hunchback is an enthusiast of various eras of extreme and bizarre underground art, and is currently working on a biography of original Fangoria magazine editor Robert "Uncle Bob" Martin. Caleb Braaten operates Sacred Bones Records, which has recently teamed with David Lynch to release his new album The Big Dream.

Macabre is defined as "dwelling on the gruesome" and "tending to produce horror in the beholder." It is also defined as "having death as a subject, comprising of or including a personalized representation of death." Represented here are magazines dealing with horror, terror, suspense, supernatural, occult, weird menace, bizarre, and off-trail stories and articles. The choice of these titles has been governed in part by their rarity. All the titles in this collection are scarce and difficult to locate. Many of these titles are not to be found in libraries and private collections. Deliberately includes magazines that had short runs and thus tended to be little known and scarce, including some of the rarest and best magazines in this genre such as The Thrill Book, Tales of Magic and Mystery, Strange Tales, Mind Magic, Mystic Magazine, and True Mystic Science. Stories are classified according to length as short stories, novelettes, novels, or serials. Non-fiction has been classified as articles, features or series. Poetry has also been included in the index. The publisher, editor, and artists have been identified whenever possible. Complete checklists of all issues published, with dates and volume numbers are given. This book mainly consists of an alphabetical index by authors, with stories and articles listed in chronological order, under title published.

The Vampyre And Other Tales Of The Macabre written by John Polidori and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-11 with Fiction categories.

`Upon her neck and breast was blood, and upon her throat were the marks of teeth having opened the vein: - to this the men pointed, crying, simultaneously struck with horror, "a Vampyre, a Vampyre!"' John Polidori's classic tale of the vampyre was a product of the same ghost-story competition that produced Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Set in Italy, Greece, and London, Polidori's tales is a reaction to the dominating presence of his employer Lord Byron, and transformed the figure of the vampire from the bestial ghoul of earlier mythologies into the glamorous aristocrat whose violence and sexual allure make him literally a 'lady-killer'. Polidori's tale introduced the vampire into English fiction, and launched a vampire craze that has never subsided. `The Vampyre' was first published in 1819 in the London New Monthly Magazine. The present volume selects thirteen other tales of the macabre first published in the leading London and Dublin magazines between 1819 and 1838, including Edward Bulwer's chilling account of the doppelganger, Letitia Landon's elegant reworking of the Gothic romance, William Carleton's terrifying description of an actual lynching, and James Hogg's ghoulish exploitation of the cholera epidemic of 1831-2. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
