Suomen sisällissota vuonna 1918 oli myös lasten sota. Lapsia joutui vanhempiensa mukana vankileireille ja heitä myös syntyi siellä. Sisällissodan jälkeen Suomessa oli lähes 15 000 orpoa, joista valtaosa oli punaisten lapsia eli punaorpoja. "Punaorvot 1918" kertoo orpolasten kohtaloista sisällissodan jälkeen. Heidän sotansa jatkui vielä vuosia, kun punalesket kamppailivat toimeentulovaikeuksien kanssa. Tämän kirjan pääosassa ovat tamperelaiset punaorvot, joita kaupunkiin jäi noin 500. Sisällissodan jälkeen valtiovalta, kunnat, hyväntekeväisyys- ja naisjärjestöt ryhtyivät pelastamaan punaorpoja perustamalla satoja lastenkoteja, lastenseimiä ja päiväkoteja. Punaorpojen huolto oli merkittävä askel myös Suomen lastensuojelun kehitykselle. Alkunsa saivat mm. Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto sekä Pelastakaa Lapset ry, jota oli perustamassa presidentin puoliso Ester Ståhlberg. Uudistettu ja täydennetty laitos.

The Finnish Civil War 1918 offers a rich account of the history and memory of the short conflict between socialist Reds and non-socialist Whites in the winter and spring of 1918. It also traces the legacy of the bloody war in Finnish society until today. The volume brings together established scholarship of political and social history with newer approaches stemming from the cultural history of war, memory studies, gender studies, history of emotions, psychohistory and oral history. The contributors provide readers with a solid discussion of the Civil War within its international and national frameworks. Among themes discussed are violence and terror, enemy images, Finnish irredentist campaigns in Soviet Karelia and the complex memory of the conflict. Besides a historical narrative, the volume discusses the current state of historiography of the Finnish Civil War. This open access book uses Finland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as an empirical case in order to study the emergence, shaping and renewal of a nation through histories of experience and emotions. It revolves around the following questions: What kinds of experiences have engendered national mobilization and feelings of national belonging? How have political and societal conflicts turned into new communities of experience and emotion? What kinds of experiences have been integrated into, or excluded from, the national context in different instances? How have people internalized or contested the nation as a context for their personal, family and minority-group experiences? In what ways has the nation entered and affected people’s intimate spheres of life? How have “national” experiences been transmitted to children in the renewal of the nation? This edited collection points to the histories of experience and emotions as a novel way of studying nations and nationalism. Building on current debates in nationalism studies, it offers a theoretical framework for analyzing the historical construction of “lived nations,” and introduces a number of new methodological approaches to understand the experiences of the nation, extending from the investigation of personal reminiscences and music records to the study of dreams and children’s drawings.

By focusing on one particular re-education institution, this book offers a multifaceted analysis of practices of diagnosis and curing what was defined as «delinquency», «criminality» or «disorderly behaviour» at the turn of the twentieth century. The study provides an important corrective to the existing accounts of re-education by proposing an approach in which institutional practices are analysed both from above and from below. The book draws attention to the process of reforming identities - the construction of reformatory identities - as the core of residential re-education. Special emphasis is placed on the interplay of notions of gender and social background. The book is based on extensive archival research drawing from a wide range of new and neglected sources. The primary material includes a unique collection of documents produced by the girls of the Vuorela State Reform School in Finland. Narrative analysis of correspondence, and careful scrutiny of the official sources created for re-educational purposes, form a basis for the investigation of the interaction between pupils' own self-expression and the aims of re-education in the construction of reformed identities. The practices developed in Finland are carefully contextualised in the European history of re-education.

While the first half of the 20th century was characterized by total war, the second half witnessed, at least in the Western world, a massive expansion of the modern welfare state. A growing share of the population was covered by ever more generous systems of social protection that dramatically reduced poverty and economic inequality in the post-war decades. With it also came a growth in social spending, taxation and regulation that changed the nature of the modern state and the functioning of market economies. Whether and in which ways warfare and the rise of the welfare state are related, is subject of this volume. Distinguishing between three different phases (war preparation, wartime mobilization, and the post-war period), the volume provides the first systematic comparative analysis of the impact of war on welfare state development in the western world. The chapters written by leading scholars in this field examine both short-term responses to and long-term effects of war in fourteen belligerent, occupied, and neutral countries in the age of mass warfare stretching over the period from ca. 1860 to 1960. The volume shows that both world wars are essential for understanding several aspects of welfare state development in the western world.

Maailmansodan ja Suomen sisällissodan tapahtumat helsinkiläisen kaupunkiyhteisön silmin. Mistä perheen jokapäiväinen leipä hankitaan, jos kauppojen hyllyt ovat tyhjiä? Mitä tehdä, jos lompakossa ja säästössä olevat rahat menettävät yhdessä päivässä arvonsa? Missä on kodin turvallisin paikka, jos kotikadulla käydään kaupunkisotaa? Näihin ja moniin muihin vaikeisiin kysymyksiin jokainen helsinkiläinen joutui etsimään vastauksia vuosina 1914-1918. Sodan ja vallankumouksien vuodet olivat pelkojen lisäksi täynnä lupauksia ja toiveita, jotka lopulta vaihtuivat pettymyksiin ja väkivaltaisuuksiin. Suomalaisen yhteiskuntajärjestelmän romahtaessa myös kaupunkiyhteisön perusteet sortuivat. Kadut täyttyivät mielenosoituksista ja mellakoista. Kaupunkilaiset alkoivat järjestäytyä alhaaltapäin. Syntyi järjestysmiesjoukkoja, työväenkaarteja ja suojeluskuntia, jotka pyrkivät aluksi yleisen järjestyksen turvaamiseen, mutta alkoivat pian varustautua toisiaan vastaan. Loppuvuodesta 1917 Helsinki oli pelon kaupunki. Myöhään illalla 26.1.1918 Helsingin työväentalon torniin nostettiin punainen lyhty vallankumouksen alkamisen merkiksi - ja pitkään pelätty sota saapui kaupunkiin. Punaisen Suomen pääkaupungin aikaa kesti kaksi ja puoli kuukautta, minkä jälkeen Helsingistä tuli valkoisten ja saksalaisten kaupunki. Väkivaltaisuuksien rinnalla jokapäiväisen elämän ongelmat vaikeutuivat päivä päivältä, ja vain maailmansodan päättyminen marraskuussa 1918 pelasti helsinkiläiset nälänhädältä. FT Samu Nyström on on historiantutkija ja tietokirjailija, jonka kirjallinen tuotanto on keskittynyt Helsingin kaupunkihistoriaan.

Suomen sisällissodan naiskohtaloita. Teoksen Susinartut ja pikku immet – Sisällissodan tuntemattomat naiset lähtökohtana on Hämeenlinnan vankileirillä toukokuussa 1918 kirjoitettu runo. Jäljittäessään runossa mainittuja kymmeniä naisia Tuulikki Pekkalainen tuli samalla selvittäneeksi monen muunkin naisen vaiheet. Keitä nämä valkoisten mukaan naisen roolinsa unohtaneet ”susinartut” olivat ja mitkä olivat heidän rikoksensa, joista pahimmillaan langetettiin kuolemantuomioita? Useimmiten he olivat työläisiä ja muuta köyhää väkeä, jotka nälän ajamina menivät punaisten puolelle. Monet naiset olivat äitejä, jotka vankileirillä kantoivat huolta lastensa ja miestensä kohtaloista. Kirjassa avataan asiakirjat ja tuodaan eteemme elävänä tilanteet, joissa vangista yritetään puristaa irti tekojen vakavuus: ”Onko viettänyt kuljeksivaa vai säännöllistä elämää, onko ollut yllyttelijänä, onko ottanut osaa ryöstelyihin, murhiin ym.?” Ensimmäisenä Suomessa tämä kirja paljastaa myös niiden nimet, jotka toimivat kuulustelijoina, laativat suojeluskuntien lausuntoja, syyttivät ja tuomitsivat valtiorikosoikeudessa. Tuulikki Pekkalainen on Turussa asuva tietokirjailija, jonka vuoden 1918 tapahtumia käsittelevät teokset Punavankileirit 1918 (yhdessä Seppo Rustaniuksen kanssa), Susinartut ja pikku immet sekä Lapset sodassa 1918 ovat herättäneet runsasta keskustelua.
