Setting And Streaming written by Wynne Harlen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Ability grouping in education categories.

Using a best evidence synthesis model, this book reviews research conducted in primary/elementary and secondary schools in the United States and in Great Britain on setting and streaming (ways of grouping pupils according to ability). The review concludes that research provides no evidence that student achievement at the primary/elementary school level is raised either by streaming (grouping by general ability) or setting (grouping by subject ability) within the school. Within-class ability grouping at the elementary school level has been found to have advantages for mathematics achievement. At the secondary level, there is no consistent and reliable evidence of positive effects of setting and streaming in any subjects, or for students of particular ability levels. Evidence suggests that teachers sometimes treat mixed-ability groups as though they were low-ability groups and that even experienced teachers frequently use inappropriate whole-class teaching methods with mixed-ability classes. What is important in determining achievement is that the challenge and support given to learners meet their needs. (Contains 168 references.) (KB)

Government intervention in the control of schools, irrespective of which political party has been in power, has changed as the 1990s have proceeded. Beginning with policy innovations centred on the system, the concerns are now with the classroom, and such issues as teaching methods and skills of 'good teachers'. The quality of learning and the quality of teaching are officially designated categories of evaluation in the inspection of schools' performance. This book reports a five year research project which aimed to capture the voices of secondary school pupils and teachers on how they defined key aspects of quality in learning and teaching. Based on individual interviews with 207 pupils and 133 teachers in ten British comprehensive schools with socially and geographically different catchment areas, the book describes and compares student and teacher perspectives on topics such as: 'what constitutes good teaching?', 'successful lessons' and, 'why pupils learn more in some classes'. The content of this book will be of interest and importance to all teachers in secondary comprehensive schools, educational policymakers, teacher trainers and trainee teachers, for it provides the kind of information which can assist schools, teachers, and pupils in doing better. It makes a significant contribution to knowledge of what the key participants in teaching and learning think. The research findings reported in this book raise important issues for policy makers with regard to training and the development support provided for teachers.

In this study – the outcome of three years’ participant observation in local authority primary and secondary schools – the classroom teacher is shown to have a far greater impact upon and responsibility for his pupils than is generally admitted. The teacher’s perceptions of the children in his class are demonstrated to have a more important bearing on the pupils’ attainment than the major factor of their social class. In carrying out this research, Roy Nash has moved outside the mainstream tradition of educational psychology to take into account the methods of anthropology and sociology. He shows, by looking at the actual behaviour of teachers and children in classrooms, and by following the pupils from several different primary schools through to the same local authority secondary school, how the teacher’s expectations for his pupils can act as self-fulfilling prophecies. The author’s illuminating research is illustrated with tables and with three Appendices.

Why do so many pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 ′switch off′ and make very little progress in the core subjects such as English and mathematics? What can teachers and schools do to improve pupils′ attitudes and motivation? Maurice Galton and his team have collected examples from various schools of what works in re-energising demotivated pupils. This book presents practical advice and strategies for improving lower secondary school classrooms, ranging from reducing class size, to innovative induction programmes emphasising the development of core study skills, and developing effective procedures to train pupils to cooperate rather than confront each other during lessons. Chapters cover: - Making a Good Start to Secondary Education. - Creating a Cooperative Classroom Climate - Improving Communication between Pupils and Teachers - Why are some classrooms more successful? - How can school structures influence positive relationships? The book is a much-needed resource for all secondary teachers, and is particularly useful for year and subject heads.
