“The rise and fall of transatlantic puritanism is told through political, theological, and personal conflict in this exceptional history.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) Begun in the mid-sixteenth century by Protestant nonconformists keen to reform England’s church and society while saving their own souls, the puritan movement was a major catalyst in the great cultural changes that transformed the early modern world. Providing a uniquely broad transatlantic perspective, this groundbreaking volume traces puritanism’s tumultuous history from its initial attempts to reshape the Church of England to its establishment of godly republics in both England and America and its demise at the end of the seventeenth century. Shedding new light on puritans whose impact was far-reaching as well as on those who left only limited traces behind them, Michael Winship delineates puritanism’s triumphs and tribulations and shows how the puritan project of creating reformed churches working closely with intolerant godly governments evolved and broke down over time in response to changing geographical, political, and religious exigencies. “Among the fairest and most readable accounts of the glorious failure that was trans-Atlantic Puritanism.” --The Wall Street Journal “Exhilarating popular history . . . convincingly captures in one bold retelling decades of scholarship on Puritanism’s origins, developments and characteristics” —Times Literary Supplement “Winship has established himself as a leading authority on the history of the Puritans. While many works have focused on a specific aspect of Puritan history, . . . there are fewer works that show Puritanism as a multinational movement in Europe and the Americas. This book fills those gaps.” —Library Journal A Choice Outstanding Academic Titles

Puritans written by John Eric Adair and has been published by Sutton Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

The group of people we now refer to as Puritans emerged early in the reign of Elizabeth I. Encompassing a spectrum of religious and, in many cases, political beliefs those early Puritans were united by their desire to purify the Anglican Church. Men like John Hampden and Sir William Waller provided the nation with a strong and vigorous leadership, while increasingly the members of Cromwell's New Model Army subscribed to the subversive political and religious ideologies of groups such as the Diggers and Levellers. Feared by many for their radical ideas and frustrated in their aims at home, some Puritans - led by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620 - reluctantly abandoned the mother church and set sail for America, there to found a 'land of saints and a pattern of holiness to all the world'. In this book John Adair traces the origins of the Puritans in the religious and political turmoil of seventeenth-century England and weaves a narrative of extraordinary vividness, with the foundation of New England and the English Civil War as its double climax. He concludes with a chapter exploring and assessing the Puritan heritage of the United States and its influence on the modern world. This book will be essential reading for all students of seventeenth-century British and American history or for anyone fascinated by Puritan ideas and the history and background of Protestant fundamentalism.

"Ryken's Worldly Saints offers a fine introduction to seventeenth-century Puritanism in its English and American contexts. The work is rich in quotations from Puritan worthies and is ideally suited to general readers who have not delved widely into Puritan literature. It will also be a source of information and inspiration to those who seek a clearer understanding of the Puritan roots of American Christianity." -Harry Stout, Yale University "...the typical Puritans were not wild men, fierce and freaky, religious fanatics and social extremists, but sober, conscientious, and cultured citizens, persons of principle, determined and disciplined excelling in the domestic virtues, and with no obvious shortcomings save a tendency to run to words when saying anything important, whether to God or to a man. At last the record has been put straight." -J.I. Packer, Regent College "Worldly Saints provides a revealing treasury of primary and secondary evidence for understanding the Puritans, who they were, what they believed, and how they acted. This is a book of value and interest for scholars and students, clergy and laity alike." -Roland Mushat Frye, University of Pennsylvania "A very persuasive...most interesting book...stuffed with quotations from Puritan sources, almost to the point of making it a mini-anthology." -Publishers Weekly "With Worldly Saints, Christians of all persuasions have a tool that provides ready access to the vast treasures of Puritan thought." -Christianity Today "Ryken writes with a vigor and enthusiasm that makes delightful reading-never a dull moment." -Fides et Historia "Worldly Saints provides a valuable picture of Puritan life and values. It should be useful for general readers as well as for students of history and literature." -Christianity and Literature

Out of European revolutions and social upheaval, an extraordinary society of literate, pious, and prosperous English Puritans flowered in seventeenth-century New England. This wonderfully readable history recreates the world of Puritan New England and places it in the broad sweep of history. The book provides a fascinating look into Puritan society, with sailors, sinners, women, children, and Native Americans joining the usual Puritan ministers of the seventeenth century. Combining remarkable primary sources with an enjoyable narrative, this book reveals the New England Nation in its fullness and complexity, and reveals striking parallels with the America of today.

Originally published in 1988, and the companion book to The Puritan Gentry, covering the period of the Civil War, the English republic and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, this book gives an account of how the godly interest of the Puritans dissolved into faction and impotence. The fissures among the Puritan gentry stemmed, as the book shows, from a conflict between their zeal in religion and the conservative instincts which owed much to their wealth and status.

Both the Papists and the Puritans in Elizabethan England have received a great deal of attention, but for the most part the two groups have been considered in isolation. They had little love for each other and there were profound differences between them, but they had more in common than they cared to admit. It is the purpose of this book to give some account of the two groups and to suggest some of the ways in which they resembled each other as well as some of the ways in which they differed. The first two chapters deal in a general way with the question of religious unity and with the problems presented to the government by the deviationists. The next four chapters treat the subject chronologically. In each, Papists and Puritans are considered separately, but an attempt is made to indicate some of the factors common to both groups. An epilogue on the Hampton Court Conference of 1604 and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 enables the author to round off the story and to glance briefly at the future of these two religious movements whose history did not end with the death of Elizabeth I and which were already undergoing significant changes. The concluding chapter touches on a number of problems which arise from a consideration of these two deeply committed groups of religious deviationists who were unable to accept the official view.--Adapted from dust jacket.
