Pushback written by Dave Bridge and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-22 with Political Science categories.

In this interdisciplinary book in an interdisciplinary series, Dave Bridge crosses methodological boundaries to offer readers insights on the political “pushback” that historically follows Supreme Court rulings with which most Americans disagree. After developing a framework for identifying the Court’s rare countermajoritarian decisions, Bridge shows how those decisions that liberals backed in the 1950s through the 1970s consistently upset conservative factions in the Democratic Party, which always managed to weather the storms—that is until Roe v. Wade in 1973. In Pushback, Bridge offers compelling hypotheses about how the two major parties can use unpopular Supreme Court rulings to shift the political momentum and win elections. He then puts those hypotheses to the test, analyzing the political fallout of recent rulings on controversial issues such as Obamacare, same-sex marriage, and religious liberty. Certain to appeal to anyone interested in American political science and history, Pushback closes with a detailed examination of the unequivocally countermajoritarian Supreme Court ruling of our lifetimes, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe. For the first time in 50 years, conditions are ripe for a party to win votes by campaigning against the will of the Court. Upcoming elections will tell if the Republicans overplayed their hand, or if Democrats will play theirs as skillfully as did the GOP after Roe.

Pushback written by Richard Rose and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-15 with categories.

Richard Rose's poetry delights with ravishing imagery, skillful metaphors, unexpected juxtapositions, and twists of language. Yet, through the tercets, quatrains, free verse, and various rhyme schemes emerges smoldering resistance to injustices of society, politics, and humankind. The messages are sharpened by the language that brings them. -Betty Mar Little, Supervisor of Language Arts for Loudoun County Public Schools, 1984-2003 Thoreau went to the woods, he said, to live deliberately-to learn what the woods had to teach him so that when he came to die, he would not discover that he had never learned. PushBack is Richard Rose's trip to the dark woods of our time. He has dwelt in those woods to stare at the ghosts of squandered opportunity that make shadows among the trees. In learning, he invites readers to consider the darkness and the shadows and the faint strands of light that are meaning and hope and "the deep integrity of how things are." "Open your heart now," he urges, "push back against the dark." I sit in the woods with him and learn his learning, again and again, more and more deeply, until I am able to push back. -Carol Ann Tomlinson, William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor Emeritus, University of Virginia, and author of The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners. Don't be fooled by the ordinary titles in the table of contents of his new collection PushBack. Few poets can hear the downbeats in a sentence and turn them into a whole new world of meaning and understanding. In popular culture I'm thinking Seinfeld who made a whole career out of the ordinary and mundane. And in the literary world former poet laureate Billy Collins, who can turn a glass of orange juice into an orchard in the middle of your kitchen. Richard Rose can turn a box of sand into diamond dust! -Nathan M. Richardson; Poet, Author, Frederick Douglass Historian In reading Richard Rose's Pushback, one can fully participate both in the universal, shared human experience as well as connect to Richard's very personal experiences and understandings. Through nature, personal relationships, and man's propensity towards war, Richard takes us on a journey through pockets of his existence and our own. Using painted word-images, wit, and humor, he seeks to illuminate both the incomprehensible atrocities of history and man, as well as the power of art to transform our minds and beings with hope into something different - something better - and, perhaps, to reach the deepest longing in every human soul for both peace and understanding. Who's there? (Four Confessions) has an element of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", and in reading it one feels the poem is speaking directly to us. Collected Words for a Memorial Service contains such profound beauty in connecting the universal, human experience with the deep existential longing of our souls. Richard is a master at the intertwining of the vivid sounds and echoes of nature amidst the brutality of death, war, destruction, and revenge - the never-ending vicious cycle. He poignantly emphasizes the overly-calculated, analytical rationale man uses to defend horrific acts in such a cold and clearly self-justifying manner. The power of the thinking mind to abandon its own soul is aptly stated in the last few phrases on p. 77 (Processionals for Voice): When the wind is done, your wear becomes you. Your care is gone. Your wear becomes you. Your core is gone. May we gain from reading Pushback a constant desire to not lose our cores and to continue to push back where human suffering is concerned. -Karine Marshall, President, Capitol Opera Richmond

The executive chairman and former CEO of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin Robbins reflects on the unique, results-oriented discipline he's developed over decades of leadership, which provides a blueprint for any organization to achieve prosperity. We live in an era in which successful organizations can fail in a flash. But they can cope with change and thrive by creating a culture that supports positive pushback: questioning everything without disrespecting anyone. Nigel Travis has forty years of experience as a leader in large and successful organizations, as well as those facing existential crisis-such as Blockbuster as it dawdled in the face of the Netflix challenge. In his ten years as CEO and chairman of Dunkin' Brands, Travis fine-tuned his ideas about the challenge culture and perfected the practices required to build it. He argues that the best way for organizations to succeed in today's environment is to embrace challenge and encourage pushback. Everyone-from the new recruit to the senior leader-must be given the freedom to speak up and question the status quo, must learn how to talk in a civil way about difficult issues, and should be encouraged to debate strategies and tactics-although always in the spirit of shared purpose. How else will new ideas emerge? How else can organizations steadily improve? Through colorful storytelling, with many examples from his own career-including his leadership in turning around the fear-ridden culture of the London-based Leyton Orient Football Club, of which he is part owner-Travis shows how to establish a culture that welcomes challenge, achieves exceptional results, and ensures a prosperous future.

The earth was undergoing regular times of recovery from the space war and technological retardation. It was during these unsuspecting times that Ork and his new ally, Vol were on their way to invade the earth. Perceiving that Elk would use the treasures of the universe to subdue them, Ork made Vol launch a durege -- a powerful alternate reality simulation of a likely attack that had Elk deceived and deviated until they got to the earth, unnoticed and began their actual intent upon it. The planet got blasted in with outworld weaponry that sent tremors throughout the planet; even slightly tilting the earth off its orbit, disrupting time and the geological balancing of the planet. Elk would make his way to the spacepower program agency and coalesce to send a shuttle into space to recover a game-changing material from a rare asteroid. The material was known as delenium and was known to possess properties that absorbed objects into nothingness. With this, they secured a leverage that made them take back the earth and begin the process of rebuilding.

Pushback, Claim Your Voice gives a rare glimpse inside the boilerhouse of prejudice, lust and bullying in schools. Sheilagh, a rebellious teen with a chip the size of a Volkswagen on her shoulders, believes that violence and anger will solve all her friendship problems. She has grown up in poverty with three older siblings, all from different fathers. Sheilagh has had no success in school or out of it. Legislated to a new group home and school, her temper alienates the school beauty, its football hero and the only boy who shows an interest in her. In composing a story about an immigrant girl who is attacked out of jealousy and lust, Sheilagh recognizes a disturbing connection to her early life in the Riverdale projects. Both Sheilagh and her fictional creation, Titshia, must deal with people who devalue them and underestimate their abilities. Both are outcasts who suffer isolation without the "sheltering tree of friendship". Both chafe under the bullying dealt to anyone who is different. How will they pushback against these forces to claim their own voices? Her life changes when she comes under the influence of two strong, supportive women: Ms. Spark, her English teacher, who believes writing will help her cope with her social issues and Mrs. Griggs, her youth counsellor, whose acceptance is a balm for Sheilagh's wounded heart. Reuctantly she starts writing and ends up creating a novel. Her narrator is the polar opposite of herself: a young immigrant girl, Titshia, who is accused of a sexual misdemeanor and cruelly bullied because of it. Titshia's Italian cullture has trained her to meekly accept the bulllying she receives because good girls do that, while Sheilagh's habit is to strike first, physically and verbally. Neither girl is happy with the outcomes of their choices. Both suffer without a "sheltering tree of friendship". Both chafe under the prejudices of school culture and society's expectations of womanhood. Will they be able to pushback against these forces to claim their own voices?
