Do you think that philosophy is an activity for old men in sandals with long white beards? Or people who sit under trees and wait to be struck on the head by apples? If so, then you owe it to yourself to explore the insights of this book. In conversational yet artful prose, James H. Hall reveals the many ways that you can actually enjoy and use philosophy in the course of your everyday experience. Rather than presenting philosophy as an endless list of ancient truths revealed by geniuses, or as instant wisdom, Hall presents philosophy as a concrete, practical enterprise that, once you've seen how it works, you can continue on your own.

Putting Philosophy To Work written by Susan Haack and has been published by Prometheus Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-14 with Philosophy categories.

This engaging and wide-ranging collection of essays is informed and unified by the conviction that philosophy can, and should, engage with real-world issues. Susan Haack's keen analytical skills and well-chosen illustrations illuminate a diverse range of cultural questions; and her direct style and wry sense of humor make complex ideas and subtle distinctions accessible to serious readers whatever their discipline or particular interests. Putting Philosophy to Work will appeal not only to philosophers but also to thoughtful scientists, economists, legal thinkers, historians, literary scholars, and humanists. This new, expanded second edition includes several previously unpublished essays: a devastating critique of Karl Popper's highly (and dangerously) influential philosophy of science; a searching and thought-provoking analysis of scientism; and a groundbreaking paper on "academic ethics in a preposterous environment" that every professor, and would-be professor, should read.

In June 2015, a conference was held in Claremont, CA. Called Seizing an Alternative, the conference had one overarching goal: to bring together the best minds from as many fields as possible, both practical and academic, to confront the disastrous consequences of the Western worldview¿¿¿the most urgent of which is climate change¿¿¿and to offer an alternative. The alternative proposed by presenters was the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead, and their hope was that those persuaded by it would bring that understanding back to their professions, their disciplines, their settings. In short, the goal was to transform the way we think. But what is process philosophy? The twelve essays in this book were designed not only to answer the what, but also to demonstrate the how and why¿how process philosophy provides a practical answer to so many of the potentially catastrophic issues now facing us, and why the alternative of an organic, relational, integrated, nondual, and processive conceptuality is so urgently needed. In embracing Whitehead as ¿the philosopher of ecological civilization,¿ the authors also position themselves on the side of hope¿not of the Pollyanna sort, but the kind that takes a clear-eyed look at what seems to be impossible and wrests from it what may yet be possible.

Philosophical Tools For Technological Culture written by Larry A. Hickman and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-22 with Philosophy categories.

"Hickman['s] . . . style of pragmatism provides us with flexible, philosophical 'tools' which can be used to analyze and penetrate various technology and technological cultural problems of the present. He, himself, uses this toolkit to make his analyses and succeeds very well indeed." —Don Ihde A practical and comprehensive appraisal of the value of philosophy in today's technological culture. Philosophical Tools for Technological Culture contends that technology—a defining mark of contemporary culture—should be a legitimate concern of philosophers. Larry A. Hickman contests the perception that philosophy is little more than a narrow academic discipline and that philosophical discourse is merely redescription of the ancient past. Drawing inspiration from John Dewey, one of America's greatest public philosophers, Hickman validates the role of philosophers as cultural critics and reformers in the broadest sense. Hickman situates Dewey's critique of technological culture within the debates of 20th-century Western philosophy by engaging the work of Richard Rorty, Albert Borgmann, Jacques Ellul, Walter Benjamin, Jürgen Habermas, and Martin Heidegger, among others. Pushing beyond their philosophical concerns, Hickman designs and assembles a set of philosophical tools to cope with technological culture in a new century. His pragmatic treatment of current themes—such as technology and its relationship to the arts, technosciences and technocrats, the role of the media in education, and the meaning of democracy and community life in an age dominated by technology—reveals that philosophy possesses powerful tools for cultural renewal. This original, timely, and accessible work will be of interest to readers seeking a deeper understanding of the meanings and consequences of technology in today's world.

Knowledge Virtue And Action written by Tim Henning and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-23 with Philosophy categories.

This volume brings together recent work by leading and up-and-coming philosophers on the topic of virtue epistemology. The prospects of virtue-theoretic analyses of knowledge depend crucially on our ability to give some independent account of what epistemic virtues are and what they are for. The contributions here ask how epistemic virtues matter apart from any narrow concern with defining knowledge; they show how epistemic virtues figure in accounts of various aspects of our lives, with a special emphasis on our practical lives. In essence, the essays here put epistemic virtues to work.

www.RobertARussell.Org It is my hope that this book will meet the needs of those who have grown with me in spiritual understanding, in awareness of the height and depth of God's love, and in realization of man's Oneness with Him; and that those who are taking their first steps on this joyous journey will find through it the Wisdom whose ways are ways of pleasantness and all whose paths are peace. Robert A. Russell Through many difficulties and many priests, our church became a parish in 1927 under Dr. Robert Russell. He eventually built this church at this location in 1941, and it was added on to in 1960. Dr. Russell was a theatrical man who was a one man show. All of the lights in the church would be turned down (there were no windows then) save one, this one over the pulpit. He would give a rousing sermon on healing and the human potential (ironically he was a more Zorastrian-like the wise man-than Anglican). He had a huge following in his heyday and this parish averaged 500-700 on a Sunday during the 1950s. A Great metaphysician and every one of his books is worth its weight in GOLD. In the 21st century knowledge-centered approaches, which take knowledge as the starting-point for elucidation of other epistemic notions (e.g. belief, rationality), have come to the fore in analytic epistemology. This volume extends the knowledge-first program by exploring how these approaches fare in new fields inside and beyond epistemology.
