This is the first volume of a unique collection that brings together the best English-language problems created for students competing in the Computational Linguistics Olympiad. These problems are representative of the diverse areas presented in the competition and designed with three principles in mind: · To challenge the student analytically, without requiring any explicit knowledge or experience in linguistics or computer science; · To expose the student to the different kinds of reasoning required when encountering a new phenomenon in a language, both as a theoretical topic and as an applied problem; · To foster the natural curiosity students have about the workings of their own language, as well as to introduce them to the beauty and structure of other languages; · To learn about the models and techniques used by computers to understand human language. Aside from being a fun intellectual challenge, the Olympiad mimics the skills used by researchers and scholars in the field of computational linguistics. In an increasingly global economy where businesses operate across borders and languages, having a strong pool of computational linguists is a competitive advantage, and an important component to both security and growth in the 21st century. This collection of problems is a wonderful general introduction to the field of linguistics through the analytic problem solving technique. "A fantastic collection of problems for anyone who is curious about how human language works! These books take serious scientific questions and present them in a fun, accessible way. Readers exercise their logical thinking capabilities while learning about a wide range of human languages, linguistic phenomena, and computational models. " - Kevin Knight, USC Information Sciences Institute

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Tbilisi Symposium on Logic, Language and Computation, TbiLLC 2013, held in Gudauri, Georgia, in September 2013. The conference series is centered around the interaction between logic, language and computation. The contributions represent these three fields and the symposia aim to foster interaction between them. The book consists of 16 papers that were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. Each paper has passed through a rigorous peer-review process before being accepted for publication. The volume also contains two summaries of the tutorials that took place at the symposium: the one on admissible rules and the one on the formal semantics of aspectual meaning from a cross-linguistic perspective.

The authors show that there are underlying mathematical reasons for why games and puzzles are challenging (and perhaps why they are so much fun). They also show that games and puzzles can serve as powerful models of computation-quite different from the usual models of automata and circuits-offering a new way of thinking about computation. Logic Programming was effectively defined as a discipline in the early seventies. It is only during the early to mid eighties that books, conferences and journals devoted entirely to Logic Programming began to appear. Consequently, much of the work done during this first crucial decade in Marseilles, Edinburgh, London, Budapest and Stockholm (to name a few) is often overlooked or difficult to trace. There are now two main regular conferences on Logic Programming, and at least five journals: The Journal of Logic Programming, New Generation Computing, Automated Reasoning, The Journal of SJmbolic Computation, and Future Generation Computer Systems. Logic Programming, however, has its roots in Automated Theorem Proving and via the expanding area of expert systems, strongly influences researchers in such varied fields as Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Law, etc. Consequently, many papers related to Logic Programming appear in a wide variety of journals and proceedings of conferences in other disciplines. This is particularly true of Computer Science where a revolution is taking place in hardware design, programming languages, and more recently databases. One cannot overestimate the importance of such a bibliography.

This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis, a phenomena whereby expressions in natural language appear to be incomplete but are still understood. It explores fundamental questions about the workings of grammar and provides detailed case studies of inter- and intralinguistic variation.

Yuri Gurevich has played a major role in the discovery and development of - plications of mathematical logic to theoretical and practical computer science. His interests have spanned a broad spectrum of subjects, including decision p- cedures, the monadic theory of order, abstract state machines, formal methods, foundations of computer science, security, and much more. In May 2010, Yuri celebrated his 70th birthday. To mark that occasion, on August 22, 2010,a symposium was held in Brno, the Czech Republic, as a sat- lite event of the 35th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2010) and of the 19th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2010). The meeting received generous support from Microsoft Research. In preparation for this 70th birthday event, we asked Yuri’s colleagues (whether or not they were able to attend the symposium) to contribute to a volume in his honor. This book is the result of that e?ort. The collection of articles herein begins with an academic biography, an annotated list of Yuri’s publications and reports, and a personaltribute by Jan Van den Bussche. These are followed by 28 technical contributions. These articles – though they cover a broad range of topics – represent only a fraction of Yuri’s multiple areas of interest. Each contribution was reviewed by one or two readers. In this regard, the editors wish to thank several anonymous individuals for their assistance.
