The Pyramid Texts are the oldest body of extant literature from ancient Egypt. First carved on the walls of the burial chambers in the pyramids of kings and queens of the Old Kingdom, they provide the earliest comprehensive view of the way in which the ancient Egyptians understood the structure of the universe, the role of the gods, and the fate of human beings after death. Their importance lies in their antiquity and in their endurance throughout the entire intellectual history of ancient Egypt. This volume contains the complete translation of the Pyramid Texts, including new texts recently discovered and published. It incorporates full restorations and readings indicated by post-Old Kingdom copies of the texts and is the first translation that presents the texts in the order in which they were meant to be read in each of the original sources.

Pyramids have been around for thousands of years, but we still don't know exactly how they were built. The oldest pyramids are found at Giza and Saqqara. The Great Pyramid at Giza is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and was built during the fourth dynasty (2575-2150 BC). During this time, there was also an increase in writing, literature, and artisanship. The Westcar Papyrus tells us of three royal women who lived during the 4th dynasty: Khufu's mother Henutsen, his wife Hetepheres I, and her sister Meresankh II. The latter was also his daughter-in-law because she married his son Khafre (ruled 2558–2532 BC). She may have been buried inside this pyramid when she died at age 26. The first hieroglyphic text was written on papyrus in about 3100 B.C. It is from a chapter from The Book Of Journey To Heaven (called book 6), which describes how Ra travels with Thoth as they visit each nome (district) throughout Egypt during a period called "the Festival Of Night," where they praise Osiris while traveling through space towards his underworld kingdom every year at midnight between June 21st/22nd - July 21st/22nd when Orion rises as Sirius sets below it just before dawn on these days known later as Dog Days because dogs often suffer heat exhaustion then too due to lack of moisture caused by intense sunlight reflecting off asphalt surfaces like sidewalks or blacktop parking lots heating up too much due to all that reflected energy bouncing back into our faces which makes us sweat which causes dehydration if we don't drink enough water!

What do the pyramids of Egypt really represent? What could have driven so many to so great, and often so dangerous, an effort? Was the motivation religious or practical? Illustrated with more than 300 photographs and drawings, this book presents an original approach to the subject of pyramid building. It reveals the connection between devices that served both a practical need for survival and a spiritual belief in gods and goddesses. It examines Egyptian technologies and techniques from the origins of pyramid development to the step-by-step details of how the ground was leveled, how the site was oriented, and how the stone was raised and placed to meet at a distant point in the sky. Here the author also asks and answers questions virtually ignored for the last century. He discloses, for example, the ancient use of shadows, now denigrated to the ornamental back-yard sundial, but once an important tool for telling the height of an object, geographical directions, the seasons of the year, and the time of day. He also reinterprets the ancient "stretching of the cord" ceremony, which once was thought to have only religious significance but here is shown as the means of establishing the sides of a pyramid.

This definitive, multi-volume history of the world's first known state reveals that much of what we have been taught about Ancient Egypt is the product of narrow-minded visions of the past Drawing on a lifetime of research, John Romer chronicles the history of Ancient Egypt from the building of the Great Pyramid through the rise and fall of the Middle Kingdom: a peak of Pharaonic culture and the period when writing first flourished. He reveals how the grand narratives of nineteenth and twentieth-century Egyptologists have misled us by portraying a culture of cruel monarchs and chronic war. Instead, based in part on discoveries of the past two decades, this extraordinary account shows what we can really learn from the remaining architecture, objects and writing: a history based on physical reality.

Ancient Egypt is a beautifully illustrated, easy-to-read book covering the formative era of the Egyptian civilization: the age before the pyramids. Douglas Brewer shows why an awareness of the earliest phase of Egyptian history is crucial to understanding of later Egyptian culture. Beginning with a quick review of the fields of Egyptology and archaeology, Ancient Egypt takes the reader on a compelling survey of Egypt's prehistoric past. The books tours the Nile Valley to explore its impact on all aspects of life, from day-to-day living to regional politics, and introduces the reader to the Nile Valley's earliest inhabitants and the very first "Egyptians".

Twenty scholars have contributed to this book which deals with the development and characteristics of the literature of ancient Egypt over a period of over more than two millenia, from the monumental origins of autobiography at the end of the Old Kingdom (ca. 2150 BC) down to the latest literary compositions in Demotic during the Graeco-Roman period (300BC-200AD). The book is divided into thirty chapters concerned with the definition of literary discourse, the history and genre of the texts, their linguistic and stylistic features and the image of Egypt as displayed in later literary traditions - Greek, Coptic and Arabic. Thoroughly interdisciplinary.
