One of the most important mathematical theorems is named after Pythagoras of Samos, but this semi-mythical Greek sage has more to offer than formulas. He is said to have discovered the numerical nature of the basic consonances and transposed the musical proportions to the cosmos, postulating a "harmony of the spheres." He may have coined the words "cosmos" and "philosophy." He is also believed to have taught the doctrine of transmigration of souls and therefore to have advised a vegetarian diet. First published in 1979, Pythagoras aims to make available to a wide range of readers the events of Pythagoras’s life and his theories, and to present him not primarily as a mathematician and scientific genius nor as a poetical and mystical phenomenon but as a man of his times subject to diverse influences. Today, Pythagoras is best remembered as a mathematician and for his mystical religious beliefs but his seminal influence as a thinker has been largely misunderstood. Peter Gorman considers that the mystical and esoteric interpretations of Pythagoras’ work have now been vindicated and that modern attempt to describe him in terms of more primitive cultures have been based upon mistaken ideas about Greek mentality and the civilization of the sixth century BC. The collection of testimonia includes the philosophical discussions of Parmenides by Plato, Aristotle and the Neoplatonists, most of which had been omitted by Diels. The introduction discusses the history of the text, the language and form of the poem, Parmenides' use and understanding of the verb 'to be', his place in the history of earlier and later philosophy and the biographical tradition. In the commentary Coxon deals in detail with both the language and the subject matter of the poem and pays full attention to Parmenides' account of the physical world. The appendix relates later Eleatic arguments to those of Parmenides.
