This book earns its title. It's a field guide to the ecosystem that is being human. And that means it is also an autobiography. It is unclear in most of the poems where the human begins and ends, and this is how it should be. The world that comes out of these poems is luminous and difficult. This isn't conventional nature poetry; it's a poetry that helps us understand the future and the world that embeds us. - Juliana Spahr What is a species autobiography? An autobiography not written through the convention of the senses? What is the bone mouth, what is it to break the surface? If autobiography is a particular history of body and bodies, then what kind of book is this? What does it permit itself: not to know? Does the book accomplish its non-human (human) aims? I like that there is a wren in it. I like that there's a whale. - Bhanu Kapil Forage the wilds of language with Melissa Eleftherion's field guide and find yourself reconstituted in sensate particles of taste and sound. Saturated in the language of insects, these poems expose identity's viscera down to its protoplasmic and mineral compositions, its Latinate roots, its collectivizing and individuating compulsions. Passing through syllabic way-stations of consciousness in formation, attention is brought to bear upon that which is irreducibly alien in us, yet common as fur and delectably female in its reproductive capacity - not to mention badass! Here are whorls, and bursts of light, where to fly is to sing is to fly, where -soft noises- compose a listening to instruct your ontological imagination. Following Eleftherion's exertion towards classification, we are led to its (im)possibility. Read this book! You never know what form you may be compelled to assume. - Elise Ficarra

Diseased States written by Charles Allan McCoy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with History categories.

Outbreaks of Ebola, SARS, MERS, coronavirus, and pandemic influenza are brutal reminders of the dangers of infectious disease. Comparing the development of disease control in Britain and the United States, from the 1793 yellow fever outbreak in Philadelphia to the H1N1 panics of more recent times, Diseased States provides a blueprint for managing pandemics in the twenty-first century. To understand why these two nations have handled contemporary disease threats in such different ways, Charles Allan McCoy examines when and how disease control measures were adopted in each country from the nineteenth century onward, which medical theory of disease was dominant at the time, and where disease control was located within the state apparatus. Particular starting conditions put Britain and the United States on distinct trajectories of institutionalization that led to their respective systems of disease control. As McCoy shows, even the seemingly objective matter of contagion is deeply enmeshed in social and political realities, and by developing unique systems of biopower to control the spread of disease, Britain and the United States have established different approaches of exerting political control over citizens' lives and bodies.

Self Images written by André Rival and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Photography categories.

Andre Rival, at home in both Paris and Berlin, has created a fascinating project out of a relatively simple idea: 100 women taking photographs of themselves. The outcome is both startling and impressive. It is an expression of contemporary female identity - self-aware, distinctive and thoroughly positive, in a series of nude photographs that inexorably capture and hold our attention, revealing at the same time the artist's highly creative approach to the medium of photography and to the individual selves of the women portrayed. The author describes his project in this way: "We are inundated with pictures of women in the media. Ordinarily, the pictures we see seek to achieve a kind of 'sameness' based on unwritten ideals of beauty; physical perfection, total fitness become the determining factors. These images of women, provoked as they are by the media industry, awakened in me the urge to confront both that industry and myself with something else. I chose to set aside my own ways of thinking and do a series of 100 women in which it was not I who would put together the photographs, but the women themselves. For this purpose, I gave them each a shutter-switch and left the room. That represented the beginning of the attempt to enable the women to become photographic subjects rather than objects; they were left to decide on their own which personal image of themselves they wanted to convey. The conditions were the same for all of the women: the same lighting, the same white background and the same unchanged camera position. It was essential to fix the location of the camera, so that the women did not perceive themselves as being pursued by an 'observer'; instead, they were able to establishdistance and camera angle themselves with the aid of a video screen that showed them each camera exposure as a still photo".
