This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications q-Series and Partitions is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1987-88 IMA program on APPLIED COMBINATORICS. We are grateful to the Scientific Committee: Victor Klee (Chairman), Daniel Kleitman, Dijen Ray-Chaudhuri and Dennis Stanton for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year long program. We especially thank the Workshop Organizer, Dennis Stanton, for organizing a workshop which brought together many of the major figures in a variety of research fields in which q-series and partitions are used. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE This volume contains the Proceedings of the Workshop on q-Series and Parti tions held at the IMA on March 7-11, 1988. Also included are papers by Goodman and O'Hara, Macdonald, and Zeilberger on unimodality. This work was of substan tial interest and discussed by many participants in the Workshop. The papers have been grouped into four parts: identities, unimodality of Gaus sian polynomials, constant term problems and related integrals, and orthogonal polynomials. They represent a cross section of the recent work on q-series includ ing: partitions, combinatorics, Lie algebras, analysis, and mathematical physics. I would like to thank the staff of the IMA, and its directors, Avner Friedman and Willard Miller, Jr., for providing a wonderful environment for the Workshop. Patricia Brick and Kaye Smith prepared the manuscripts.

Vector Partitions, Visible Points and Ramanujan Functions offers a novel theory of Vector Partitions, though very much grounded in the long-established work of others, that could be developed as an extension to the existing theory of Integer Partitions. The book is suitable for graduate students in physics, applied mathematics, number theory and computational mathematics. It takes the reader up to research level, presenting new results alongside known classical results from integer partitions and areas of vector and multipartite partition theory. It also sets forth new directions for research for the more advanced reader. Above all, the intention of the book is to bring new inspiration to others who study mathematics and related areas. It is hoped that some new ideas will be launched to add value and insight into many of the classical and new theories surrounding partitions. The book is an appreciation of the many gifted authors of research into partitions over the past century and before, in the hope that more may come of this for future generations. Features Provides a step-by-step guide through the known literature on Integer and Vector Partitions, and a focus on the not so well-known Visible Point Vector identities Serves as a reference for graduate students and researchers in physics, applied mathematics, number theory and computational mathematics Offers a variety of practical examples as well as sets of exercises suitable for students and researchers Geoffrey B. Campbell completed his PhD at Australian National University in 1998 under the esteemed physicist Professor Rodney Baxter. His affiliation with the Australian National University Mathematical Sciences Institute has continued for over 30 years. Within that time frame, Geoffrey also served eight years as an Honorary Research Fellow at LaTrobe University Mathematics and Statistics Department in Melbourne. Currently he writes ongoing articles for the Australian Mathematical Society Gazette. Within the international scope, Geoffrey currently serves as a PhD external committee member for a mathematics graduate student at Washington State University in America. Geoffrey has built a career within Australian Commonwealth and State government departments, including as an Advisor at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet; as Analyst Researcher for a Royal Commission. Geoffrey specializes in complex data, machine learning including data analytics. He is also a published poet in Australian anthologies and literary magazines.

Orthogonal Polynomials And Special Functions written by Erik Koelink and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-07-03 with Mathematics categories.

The set of lectures from the Summer School held in Leuven in 2002 provide an up-to-date account of recent developments in orthogonal polynomials and special functions, in particular for algorithms for computer algebra packages, 3nj-symbols in representation theory of Lie groups, enumeration, multivariable special functions and Dunkl operators, asymptotics via the Riemann-Hilbert method, exponential asymptotics and the Stokes phenomenon. Thenbsp;volume aims at graduate students and post-docs working in the field of orthogonal polynomials and special functions, and in related fields interacting with orthogonal polynomials, such as combinatorics, computer algebra, asymptotics, representation theory, harmonic analysis, differential equations, physics. The lectures are self-contained requiring onlynbsp;a basic knowledge of analysis and algebra, and each includes many exercises.

Higher Combinatorics written by M. Aigner and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

It is general consensus that Combinatorics has developed into a full-fledged mathematical discipline whose beginnings as a charming pastime have long since been left behind and whose great signifi cance for other branches of both pure and applied mathematics is only beginning to be realized. The last ten years have witnessed a tremendous outburst of activity both in relatively new fields such as Coding Theory and the Theory of Matroids as well as in' more time honored endeavors such as Generating Functions and the Inver sion Calculus. Although the number of text books on these subjects is slowly increasing, there is also a great need for up-to-date surveys of the main lines of research designed to aid the beginner and serve as a reference for the expert. It was the aim of the Advanced Study Institute "Higher Combinatorics" in Berlin, 1976, to help fulfill this need. There were five sections: I. Counting Theory, II. Combinatorial Set Theory and Order Theory, III. Matroids, IV. Designs and V. Groups and Coding Theory, with three principal lecturers in each section. Expanded versions of most lectures form the contents of this book. The Institute was designed to offer, especially to young researchers, a comprehen sive picture of the most interesting developments currently under way. It is hoped that these proceedings will serve the same purpose for a wider audience.

The need of optimal partition arises from many real-world problems involving the distribution of limited resources to many users. The “clustering” problem, which has recently received a lot of attention, is a special case of optimal partitioning. This book is the first attempt to collect all theoretical developments of optimal partitions, many of them derived by the authors, in an accessible place for easy reference. Much more than simply collecting the results, the book provides a general framework to unify these results and present them in an organized fashion. Many well-known practical problems of optimal partitions are dealt with. The authors show how they can be solved using the theory — or why they cannot be. These problems include: allocation of components to maximize system reliability; experiment design to identify defectives; design of circuit card library and of blood analyzer lines; abstraction of finite state machines and assignment of cache items to pages; the division of property and partition bargaining as well as touching on those well-known research areas such as scheduling, inventory, nearest neighbor assignment, the traveling salesman problem, vehicle routing, and graph partitions. The authors elucidate why the last three problems cannot be solved in the context of the theory.
