Nei suoi quaderni, con estrema lucidità, descrive lacchè intellettuali, racconta di galli che annunziano un sole che mai vuole spuntare, e dell’assenza nella vita italiana di ogni movimento «vertebrato» che abbia in sé possibilità di sviluppo permanente e continuo. I Quaderni del carcere sono la raccolta degli appunti, dei testi e delle note che Antonio Gramsci iniziò a scrivere dall'8 febbraio 1929, durante la sua prigionia nelle carceri fasciste. Da una parte Gramsci considerava lo scrivere un esercizio contro l'inaridimento e la solitudine causati dalla vita carceraria, dall'altra aveva la chance di teorizzare in autonomia da questioni politiche contingenti. In questa antologia la selezione e divisione in capitoli del curatore è “effettuata nell'ottica della maggiore chiarezza possibile, anche per dare la possibilità, a chi ne sia completamente all'asciutto, di avere un quadro generale del pensiero di Antonio Gramsci”. L’Autore: Antonio Gramsci, per la statura del suo impegno intellettuale e politico è considerato una tra le maggiori figure della prima metà del Novecento italiano. Membro del PSI e fondatore de L'Ordine Nuovo (1919), fece parte dell'esecutivo dell'Internazionale comunista. Divenuto segretario del Partito Comunista d'Italia e deputato, affrontò la questione meridionale, indirizzando la politica dei comunisti verso l'unione con i socialisti massimalisti. Nel 1924 fondò il quotidiano politico l'Unità. Per la sua attività e per le sue idee fu condannato a venti anni di carcere. Il suo pensiero politico si articolò in una rilettura globale dei fenomeni sociali e politici internazionali dal Risorgimento in poi, che lo portò a criticare lo stalinismo, a teorizzare il passaggio dalla "guerra di movimento" alla "guerra di posizione", a formulare i concetti di "egemonia" e di "rivoluzione passiva". Il curatore: Mario Di Vito, classe 1989, giornalista. Lavora per Il Manifesto, scrive anche per A-Rivista Anarchica, Malamente e altre testate. Ha pubblicato i noir "Il male minore" (Edizioni Ae, 2016), "Due minuti a mezzanotte" (Fila 37, 2018) e il reportage narrativo "Dopo. Storie da un terremoto negato" (Poiesis/Lo Stato delle Cose, 2019).

In this work, Marcos Del Roio analyses Gramsci's pre-prison political-theoretical activity in light of a radical thesis: that throughout Gramsci's life we see a total continuity between his political praxis and his philosophical reflection. That is not to ignore the changes, turns, and even fractures in the Sardinian communist's thinking across his brief but rich existence. On the contrary. Reading Gramsci, we find key ideas that set the rhythm of all of his thought, at least from the time of the Turin factory councils up till the writing of his final notebooks. These ideas also established the essential identity of his thinking, throughout (and over and above) the diversity of its manifestations: just as we typically find in all great thinkers. This book's title, referring to the metaphor of a ray of light passing through a prism, expresses this counterpoint between identity and diversity. The main category we find in the subtitle speaks to this same problematic, considered in the context of Gramsci's political action and the radical Leninism that guided him in his victorious battle with Bordiga: the 'united front'. This political formula was coined in Germany in 1921 and was central to the late Lenin's thinking, and in this work Del Roio shows its various different interpretations as the basis for analysing Gramsci's own position in this regard.

Pisacane has been described in English text books and by a number of historians as a key person and in one case as ‘one of the most intelligent leaders’ of the Risorgimento, yet little has been written about him in English. This work therefore aims to introduce this soldier, writer, freedom-fighter and martyr of the Sapri Expedition to an English readership. The introduction tells us about Pisacane’s life and career, including his part alongside Mazzini and Garibaldi in the Roman Republic. It also surveys his written work which evidenced the development of his political thinking and culminated in his Saggi-storici-politici-militari sull'Italia, published posthumously between 1858–1860. La Rivoluzione later published separately was a call to avoid the mistakes of earlier bourgeois revolutions, insisting on the need for an overtly socialist programme to involve the masses in a specifically Italian revolution. Finally, the introduction attempts to set the translated work in the context of post-Enlightenment political thought, as well as contrasting Pisacane’s approach with the mainstream nationalist and republican movements in Italy.
