Excerpt from Quaker Anecdotes There is no doubt a change going on among the Quakers, which will interfere greatly with that racy individuality which has so long characterised them as a distinct com munity. According to appearances, it seems very unlikely that the future will be so prolific in this respect as has been the past. Excerpt from The Handsome Quaker, and Other Stories They were supping at Joshua. Fayle's, behind shuttered windows, although without a green and gold summer twilight yet lingered. Perhaps it behoved the Quakers to be chary of displaying wealth and importance, as it did their wealthy Roman Catholic neighbours, who led their lives of luxury and refinement behind blank walls that said nothing to the world. Perhaps there were other reasons for shutting out the daylight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Nicholas the Weaver and Other Quaker Stories The warm reception which has been given to my former book of Quaker stories has encouraged me to write a fresh series of sketches of life and character among the Society of Friends in its first two centuries. As before, all are more or less founded on fact. The Yorkshire weaver who left the Roundhead army, and threw his uniform on to the bed canopy, is a tradition in my own family, and the little farmers boy who put his spelling-book into the churn, and in maturer years labelled the elderly goose, was my grandfather, although the rest of his life was certainly not that of "Stephen Grey." Some touching Minutes in the ancient records of the Sussex Quarterly Meeting of Friends suggested "Apprenticed by the Meeting" and "Poor Timatha," and in the latter case it seems right that the history of William Tuke's noble experiment in the humane treatment of the insane should be more widely known than it is. "Transported" is founded on an incident in the life of Elizabeth Dudley, who, when visiting Newgate with Elizabeth Fry, found an old servant of her own among the prisoners. Excerpt from The Colonel and the Quaker Memory quickly accused me, in the presence of this 11beloved lady, of not having paid closer attention when she related many pleasing anecdotes and reminiscences; a longing came upon me that in some way these old stories and gossips might be vouchsafed me. As if in answer to this wish, the tall, old eight-day clock appeared to tick louder, and to be imbued with life. The Revolutionary sword hanging above the commission of a soldier ancestor, seemed to be stirred upon its hang ings, although no breeze played about the room. While watching this strange phenomenon the severely straight lines of the old family timepiece gave place to curved ones; the rigid plumes upon its top assumed the shape of a broad-brimmed beaver hat, with the brim turned up; while beneath, the gold face of the clock with its silver figures faded away. As it grew dimmer, a round, ruddy human face took its place, while the silver rim became snow white hair surrounding the head. Having been so absorbed in watching the metamorphosis of the face of the old heirloom I had not noticed that its case had changed into the very well-rounded figure of a Quaker gentleman in the dress worn by Friends (quakers) about the year 1750. Excerpt from The Quaker Cross: A Story of the Old Bowne House We must not examine too strictly the conduct of the bishops and other dignitaries as to what they did with these monies, but we read that luxuries and many excesses had found their way into the Church, and all were traveling rapidly on the downward road. Excerpt from A Quaker Love Story, and Other Poems The following Quaker Love Story, told first by the hero ine nearly sixty years ago, and now retold in verse, has, I fear, little to recommend it but its simplicity and truthful ness; A certain sweet New Testament plainness - to bor row one of Charles Lamb's inimitable expressions - having always been a distinguishing characteristic of the Friends. The greater number of the remaining poems have already appeared in The Scribner, Century, Current, Independent, Christian Union, Weekly Magazine, and other publications of the day. Excerpt from Quaker Lady: The Story of Charity Lynch and Her People My father had a birthright membership in the Spring field Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. This he automatically forfeited when he married, and joined the Methodist Church. The farm home near the lower meeting house on Todd's Fork, in Clinton County, Ohio, was bro ken up when grandfather died. Grandmother went to live in Dayton. Each summer, she paid us a visit at our home near the campus of the Friends College in Wilmington, Ohio. I have vivid memories of the services of silent worship in the old meeting-house, and of Grandma Harvey taking her place in the facing benches. My reverence for this dear Quakeress has made me interested in all Quakers. I, myself, am now a grandmother, and memories grow sweeter with the years. Some time ago, I began recording facts that my children may wish to know when no one is left to tell them; then came the opportunity to help with a Woods family history. These were my husband's people - staunch Associated Reformers. Scattered through attic treasure into which I delved were many elusive clues to a Lynch family, and I learned that my husband, also, had Quaker ancestry. Excerpt from The Time of Her Life: And Other Stories There have been in the past a good many attempts in fiction to portray Quaker life with its peculiarities, its faults and its virtues; but coming from the pens of outsiders, many of the pictures are far from correct, or pleasing; with perhaps, the one exception of "The Quaker Settlement," in Uncle Tom's Cabin. I have endeavoured in these stories to give a more authentic presentment of phases of Friendly life, in the hope that it will interest the rising generation, many of whom so nobly uphold the true spirit of Quakerism, although what were once considered its essential outer signs are rapidly becoming things of the past. It may be best to point out at once how much is fact, and how much fiction. The stories were first suggested to me by handling old family relics, which set me trying to realise the lives and characters of their original owners.
