This book is a timely and practical guide to conducting qualitative research with a socio-technical approach. It covers the foundations of research including research design, research philosophy, and literature review; describes qualitative data collection, qualitative data preparation and filtering; explains qualitative data analysis using the techniques of socio-technical grounded theory (STGT); and presents the advanced techniques of qualitative theory development using emergent or structured modes. Part III – Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis includes four chapters that explain: the key concepts related to collecting qualitative data in Chapter 7; techniques used for collecting qualitative data in Chapter 8; how to go about preparing and filtering qualitative data in Chapter 9; and the qualitative data analysis procedures of open coding, constant comparison, and memoing in Chapter 10. Part IV – Theory Development includes two chapters that explain: what is considered theory (or theoretical outcomes) in Chapter 11; and the advanced STGT steps of theory development in Chapter 12. Eventually, Part V – Evaluation and Future Directions includes two chapters that: present the evaluation guidelines for assessing STGT applications and outcomes in Chapter 13; and explore new opportunities in qualitative research using large language models in Chapter 14. This book enables new and experienced researchers in modern as well as traditional disciplines to conduct rigorous qualitative research on socio-technical topics in the digital world. The French writer Arnold van Gennep first called attention to the phenomena of status passages in his Rites of Passage one hundred years ago. In Status Passage, first published in 1971, the movement of individuals and groups in contemporary society from one status to another is examined in the light of Gennep's original theory. Glaser and Strauss demonstrate that society emerges as a comparative order. In this order, every organized action, collective or individual, can be seen as a form of status passage. From one status to another-from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, from being single to being married, movement from one income group, social class or religion to another-there are passages that entail movement into different parts of a social structure and loss or gain in privileges. Types of status passage are described by their proper ties. The authors present a formal theory of status passage in the form of a running theoretical discussion. The concepts and categories discussed in Status Passage are illuminated by a large number of examples chosen from a wide range of human behavior, and the applicability of the theory to still other examples is made apparent. This book records one of the continuous attempts of the IFIP Working Group 8. 2, studying the interaction of information systems and the organization, to explore and understand the shifting boundaries and dependencies between organizational activities and their computer support. The book marks the result of the IFIP WG 8. 2 conference on "Designing Ubiquitous Information Environments: Socio-Technical Issues and Challenges. " Since its inception in the late 1970s, IFIP WG 8. 2 has sought to understand how computer-based information systems interact and must be designed as an integrated part of the organizational design. At that time, information systems handled repetitive and remote back-office functions and the main concern was work task design for repetitive input tasks and the potential impact of improved information support on organizational decision-making and structure. The focus of the information system design shifted in the 1980s when computers became part of the furniture and moved into the office. Reflecting this significant change, IFIP WG 8. 2 in 1989 organized a conference dedicated to the design and impact of desktop technology in order to examine how organizational processes and the locus of action changed when the computer was moved into the office. Sixteen years later, we are experiencing another significant change. Computers are now becoming part of our body and sensory system and will move out of the traditional office locations and into the wilderness. Again, IFIP WG 8.

This book encapsulates some work done in the DIRC project concerned with trust and responsibility in socio-technical systems. It brings together a range of disciplinary approaches - computer science, sociology and software engineering - to produce a socio-technical systems perspective on the issues surrounding trust in technology in complex settings. Computer systems can only bring about their purported benefits if functionality, users and usability are central to their design and deployment. Thus, technology can only be trusted in situ and in everyday use if these issues have been brought to bear on the process of technology design, implementation and use. The studies detailed in this book analyse the ways in which trust in technology is achieved and/or worked around in everyday situations in a range of settings - including hospitals, a steelworks, a public enquiry, the financial services sector and air traffic control. Whilst many of the authors here may already be known for their ethnographic work, this book moves on from accounts of 'field studies' to show how the DIRC project has utilised the data from these studies in an interdisciplinary fashion, involving computer scientists, software engineers and psychologists, as well as sociologists. Chapters draw on the empirical studies but are organised around analytical themes related to trust which are at the heart of the authors' socio-technical approach which shows the nuanced ways in which technology is used, ignored, refined and so on in everyday settings.

Creating an inclusive environment where different software developers can feel welcome and leverage their talents is an ethical imperative no company can ignore.
