The English language increasingly influences Taiwanese life because Taiwan entered the global village and English language changed into a more important skill in order to communicate with foreigners. Many Taiwanese parents desire their children become proficient English speakers so that they send them to "buxiban" (cram schools) in Taiwan or study abroad in the Unites States. Therefore, this qualitative phenomenological research was to investigate individual experience of Taiwanese students studying abroad in Michigan in the United States. Sakurai et al. (2010) study is divided into three models of studying abroad learners' social network: "co-national, multinational and local" (p. 177). According to the in-depth individual interview and the focused group interview, this study also found most participants spent much time with the same national group and they do not improve their oral skill in English during studying abroad in the United States.

Abstract: As the economies of rising powers such as China continue to grow, this will also provide a strong 'pull' for students wishing to gain international experience. Traditionally, this has involved a flow of international students from 'East' to 'West' and from 'North' to 'South', but as markets such as Hong Kong have developed their higher education sectors; these regions have become more and more attractive for students. This paper has explored the factors which influence the decision-making process of, and ultimately motivate, international students to seek higher learning within the sphere of Greater China, but outside Mainland China (i.e. the Hong Kong Special Administrative Regions and the Republic of China (Taiwan)). The existing literature on student motivation was examined, paying particular attention to those factors which have been determined to be relevant to the two key markets, and a qualitative study was conducted to verify and expand on the existing knowledge in this area. The results were reviewed and analysed and it was discovered that there was a significant degree of overlap between the two jurisdictions. Differences were also apparent, however, in the focus of the participants and the sources of information they sought when evaluating alternatives. Environmental factors were roughly equally significant, and those factors which were deemed important were fairly consistent, across the two jurisdictions, however, Taiwan-based students appeared to place more emphasis on elements such as the political climate and the opinion of family, friends and peers. This is in contrast with the emphasis on academic quality and the perception of authority figures which featured more prominently in Hong Kong-based respondents. This information was compounded and used to formulate an updated reckoning of the working model used to implement this research which could be expanded with further research. Exploring the Opportunities and Challenges of International Students opens with a focus on Taiwanese international students by defining the Taiwanese within historical and political context, providing an overview of the trends in studying abroad, as well as a literature review on Taiwanese international students' adjustment process. Following this, the authors present an argument for integrating psychological, social and academic perspectives, highlighting the interrelation between these domains in empirical data collected using a new, integrated measure of students' academic, social and psychological adjustment. Using a multi-university sample, the subsequent chapter presents a study of how types of emotional support play a role in how young Chinese international students' experience academic stresses. In the penultimate study, in order to investigate students' expectations and experiences when studying abroad, a group of outbound exchange students at Umeå University, Sweden, were surveyed before and after the experience of studying in a foreign country. In the concluding paper, the authors examine the challenges faced by international students in integrating into computer science programs at various institutions, identifying differences in student and faculty perceptions.

The national identity of Taiwanese people has been a topic under public debate and academic inspection since Taiwan's democratization in the 1980s and the 1990s. In this study, I interviewed fifteen Taiwanese students studying in the United States and talked with them about their national identity. Interviews with the fifteen students reveal that an independent Taiwanese identity has taken shape, while a Chinese cultural identity still remains part of the Taiwanese identity. It was also discovered that although a Taiwanese national identity has formed, a Taiwanese ethnicity has not yet taken a complete form. Discussions with the Taiwanese students also indicate that studying in the multi-cultural United States renders them more aware of their Taiwanese national identity, as well as their Chinese cultural identity.

Globalization has led to increasing international mobility among business and education professionals over the past 50 years. When people have increased opportunities to interact with others from different cultures, intercultural sensitivity becomes important to create harmony among various cultural groups and reduce anxiety and cultural conflict. The purpose of this study was to examine Taiwan business colleges students' intercultural sensitivity and how they learned about different cultures from their daily lives and formal education. The population in this study comprised Taiwanese citizens who were college seniors majoring in international business and management in Taiwan. The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and a demographic survey were employed in the first phase, a quantitative study. From a total of 195 students, 103 students (52.8%), 88 students (45.1%), and 4 students (2.1%) scored their intercultural sensitivity in the low-middle DD/R stage, high DD/R stage to low-middle M stage, and high M stage to low-middle AA stage respectively. Data analysis demonstrated no significant differences between students' intercultural sensitivity and gender, age, and foreign language capability, but significant differences emerged in students' intercultural sensitivity and international experiences, activities on campus, and future plans. In the second phase, a qualitative study, phenomenological theory was used. Based on students' scores on the IDIs, 12 interviewees were selected. Interviewees' intercultural sensitivity inclined either toward the ethnocentrism or ethnorelativism, and gender balance was considered. Data analysis demonstrated students whose intercultural sensitivity leaned toward ethnocentrism primarily learned different cultures from multimedia, had no or few international experiences, were uninterested in participating in intercultural activities on campus, and preferred to work in Taiwan after graduation. To compare with those students, students whose intercultural sensitivity leaned toward ethnorelativism learned cultural differences from listening to others' international experiences, engaged in international experiences like short-study abroad, were interested in participating intercultural activities on campus, and preferred to pursue higher education overseas after graduation. Various implications emerged for Taiwan business college seniors to enhance their intercultural sensitivity, for Taiwanese teachers to include their personal international experiences in curriculum design, and for business school leaders to consider appropriate programs to improve students' intercultural sensitivity.

Chinese International Students And Citizenship written by Xiudi Zhang and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-22 with Education categories.

This book investigates how Chinese international students reconfigure their sense of themselves as citizens when they reflect on what Chinese citizenship means in the context of New Zealand. Adopting a case study approach, it develops a theory relating to the thoughts of Chinese international students; the theory is based on the communities, schools, family and state relationships of both their past and their contemporary daily experiences. It finds that the struggles of Chinese young people lie in between being individuals and submitting to the general will of the family, state and guanxi (a Chinese concept of interpersonal relationships). The book argues that the Western literature on citizenship is not sufficient in helping us understand how it is viewed in the Chinese contexts. It offers readers a picture of what citizenship means for Chinese young people and the role of citizenship education in Modern Chinese society, and demonstrates that the Chinese young people studied re-educated themselves on citizenship in a way that is unstable and emotional. This book makes important contributions to the literature on Chinese students who are studying abroad by going beyond the well-researched topics of academic and social experience to explore deeper understandings of each individual student’s relationship to family and the state in China and how the study abroad experience has developed new understandings of individual’s relationships to China, and new possibilities for contributing to Chinese society on return.

International Student Mobility presents an autoethnographic study, which follows a group of non-English speaking international students from Taiwan during a period of study in Australia. The study examines the ways in which the students’ sense of identity shifts over time, and why this happens. Hsieh engages Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of capital, habitus and field to develop an understanding of complexity of identity movements and asks to what extent the students see themselves as culturally and linguistically ‘international’, both during their time abroad and upon their return home. Perfect for researchers and advanced students interested in international higher education, International Student Mobility is also an insightful read for those investigating the experiences of Chinese-speaking international students.

Developing The Global Student written by David Killick and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-27 with Education categories.

Developing the Global Student addresses the question of how students of higher education can emerge from their university life better equipped to dwell more effectively, ethically, and comfortably amidst the turmoils of a globalizing world. It does this from a number of theoretical perspectives, illustrating the nature of the personal and educational challenges facing the individual student and the teaching professional. The book explores the massive social changes wrought by the technologies and mobilities of globalization, particularly how present and future generations will relate to, work with and dwell alongside the global other. It outlines a range of social, psychological and intercultural perspectives on human tendencies to seek out comfort among communities of similitude, and illustrates how the experience of life in a global era requires us to transcend the limits of our own biographies and approach university education as a matter of knowledge deconstruction and identity reconstruction, rather than reproduction. This book brings these considerations directly into the daily business of higher education by drawing out the implications for practice at a number of levels. It examines: the implications of a globally interconnected world and individual biographies for the design of the curriculum; a holistic view of learning in the context of the need to develop the global self; what the impact on non-academic practice will be if universities as institutions are to enable these changes; ways in which the broader student community can transform to offer an experience which is more supportive of the development of global selves. Linking theoretical perspectives to present a model of learning as change, this book will be of great interest to those working in higher education, and particularly to anyone involved in policy design and the delivery of the student experience.
