QoS (Quality of Service) and Network Management are old topics. However, the fusion of IP style multimedia and wireless networks (3G) means that network managers who might previously have dealt with one or the other, must now manage and provide service guarantees for the both. This is where Managing Service Level Quality across Wireless and Fixed Networks steps in. It begins by examining the mechanisms that already existed in fixed IP data networks prior to the introduction of probe and agent technology. A look at these later developments is then supplemented with a real-world scenario of how real time application performance monitoring can not only provide service level management but can also aid in root cause analysis. This same model is then applied to a wireless environment examining which elements are required to be able to deliver multimedia services across 2nd and 3rd generation mobile networks, detailing the components of data networking that will assist in guaranteeing service level performance and the constraints placed on those guarantees when passing services over an air interface to a wireless-enabled device. It asks a simple question: will multimedia applications and the guaranteed levels of service required by them work when traversing from fixed to wireless networks? It tracks QoS components and mechanisms of both environments and looks at what will provide the glue in this brave new converged world and also provides empirical data to back up the conclusions drawn. First book available which applies QoS techniques and technologies to wireless/mobile networks 3G/UMTS Deals with the search for the real time information that constitutes the "customer experience" in terms of application performance so that service levels can be verified against measurable and relevant data in a true end-to-end manner across both fixed and wireless networks Presents probe and agent technology Features a real-world scenario of how real time application performance monitoring can not only provide service level management but can also aid in root cause analysis - this will be of particular interest to practitioner Analyses which elements are required in order to deliver multimedia services across 2nd and 3rd generation mobile networks Details the components of data networking that will assist in guaranteeing service level performance Essential reading for Wireless and IP data network professionals/practitioners, network managers and architects, technical consultants, quality assessment engineers, infrastructure vendors, application developers, portal designers, wireline operators, lecturers, postgraduates, senior undergraduate students and industry trainees.

Quality Of Service Qos Management In Mixed Wireless Networks Using The Power Performance Measure written by Yacob T. Astatke and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Computer networks categories.

The explosion of new wireless services is driving the need for coverage beyond traditional cellular networks to other services such as Wi-Max, wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and Ad-Hoc or mesh networks. A mixed network as presented in this work, combines fixed/cellular networks with Ad-hoc networks and reflects the future of wireless networks. There are two focus areas in this dissertation. First, it uses a new clustering algorithm that expands a modified k-means clustering algorithm to organize the mixed network. Second, it uses the Power Performance Measure to establish the appropriate operating point in the mixed network in order to provide Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for time critical applications as a function of the traffic level. The results show the potential to significantly enhance QoS performance of the mixed network and maintain that performance level under operating conditions. Performance in mixed networks is especially difficult to characterize. Serving users with real time applications is a challenge for mixed networks as multiple elements complicate QoS guarantees. This work successfully develops a model for QoS in a mixed network. This work shows that a multistage clustering scheme is an effective method for organizing mixed networks and introduces a clustering scheme that jointly optimizes network performance for Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and for Delay using multiple distance measures. This work also demonstrates that a Power Performance Measure, which combines throughput and delay into a single performance measure is an effective tool for managing QoS in Mixed Networks. -- Abstract.

Quality Of Service In Heterogeneous Networks written by Novella Bartolini and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-09 with Computers categories.

This volume presents the proceedings of the 6th International ICST Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness and of the Third International ICST Workshop on Advanced Architectures and Algorithms for Internet DElivery and Applications. Both events were held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in November 2009. To each of these events is devoted a specific part of the volume. The first part is dedicated to the proceedings of ICST QShine 2009. The first four chapters deal with new issues concerning the quality of service in IP-based telephony and multimedia. A second set of four chapters addresses some important research problems in mul- hop wireless networks, with a special emphasis on the problems of routing. The following three papers deal with recent advances in the field of data mana- ment and area coverage in sensor networks, while a fourth set of chapters deals with mobility and context-aware services. The fifth set of chapters contains new works in the area of Internet delivery and switching systems. The following chapters of the QShine part of the volume are devoted to papers in the areas of resource management in wireless networks, overlay, P2P and SOA arc- tectures. Some works also deal with the optimization of quality of service and energy consumption in WLAN and sensor networks and on the design of a mobility support in mesh networks.

This work represents a milestone for the "ULOOP User-centric Wireless Local Loop" project funded by the EU IST Seventh Framework Programme. ULOOP is focused on the robust, secure, and autonomic deployment of user-centric wireless networks. Contributions by ULOOP partners as well as invited tutorials by international experts in the field. The expected impact is to increase awareness to user-centric networking in terms, e.g., of business opportunities and quality of experience, and to present adequate technology to sustain the growth of user-friendly wireless architectures. Throughout the last 3 years, ULOOP has developed enabling technologies for user-centricity in wireless networks, with particular emphasis on social trust management, cooperation incentives, community building, mobility estimation, and resource management. This work will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, operators, vendors, and end-users interested in the current and future directions of user-centric access networks.

Utility Functions For Hybrid Network Quality Of Service written by Pratibha Bhasin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with categories.

Hybrid networks are fast emerging as a strong contender for next generation wireless networks with diverse Quality-of-Service requirements and resource constraints on multiple services. A hybrid network is an integration of both centralized cellular wireless access mode and peer-to-peer ad hoc mode. Utility functions provide an appropriate way to specify a quantitative measure of the perceived QoS from an application level perspective for systems with adaptive and re-negotiable QoS. Thus, application of utility functions for QoS-based resource management within next generation hybrid wireless networks looks promising. Most works on utility do not address the traditional cellular networks performance metrics of call blocking probability, call dropping probability and fairness, or the typical ad hoc network performance metric of path delay. This research performs a comprehensive survey of proposed hybrid network architectures to highlight the strong points and limitations of each. This research then presents an overview of pricing and utility schemes used in a number of architectures, and provides additional details on the application of one particular utility scheme for hybrid networks. An extensive set of simulations is performed to study the objective trade off between utility and the cellular metrics of call blocking and call dropping. A discussion on fairness emphasizes the need for additional work on fairness for multi-traffic networks. Lastly, a comprehensive resource-utility function appropriate for hybrid networks which captures the effects of both bandwidth and delay on utility is proposed.
