Phenomena in space physics are complex and their understanding often requires the integration of different concepts of space physics. To help the beginner this book uses a new methodological approach. The first chapters introduce simple concepts of plasma physics and describe where these concepts can be applied in space physics. The subsequent chapters are devoted to more-complex observations. These are interpreted in terms of the concepts introduced earlier and new, more difficult, concepts are introduced where they are required. Thus observations and physical concepts can be interwoven to give basic explanations of phenomena and also show the limitations in these explanations and point out some rather fundamental questions.

Data on the geosynchronous plasma environment derived from the UCSD plasma detectors on the ATS-5 and ATS-6 satellites have been carefully compiled into a pictorial atlas. The atlas consists of 12 days of data from 1969 (ATS-5), 38 days from 1970 (ATS-5), 37 days from 1974 (ATS-6), and 8 days from 1976 (ATS-6). The data are 10-min averages of the first four moments of the plasma distribution function for the electrons and ions. The data are presented in the form of spectrograms and line plots along with detailed ephemeris and geophysical information. Two computer tapes are available, the formats of which are given in an appendix.

Nobel symposium No. 54 on High Latitude Magnetospheric/Iono spheric Plasma Physics was organized in Kiruna, Sweden on March 22-25, 1982 by Kiruna Geophysical Institute and EISCAT Scientific Association. Some 50 leading experts from Western Europe, America and USSR were invited to the Symposium. One main purpose of the Symposium was to prepare for the intense European research effort in space plasma physics in the middle 1980's, in which the EISCAT facilities and the Swedish satellite Viking are two of the more important constituents. The prograuune of the symposium was tied to the physics of those regions of near space where EISCAT and Viking are expected to pro vide important new observational results. This is rather well covered by the t it Ie of these proceedings: High Lat itude Space Plasma Physics. The first two sessions dealt with the physics of the high latitude ionosphere and the third one with how this part of near space is affected by the properties of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field. The remaining three sessions covered fairly extensively the high latitude magnetospheric physics at altitudes of 1-2 earth radii, which is the main scien tific object of the Viking project. The Prograuune COllDlittee of the Kiruna Nobel Symposium was composed of the following European scientists: P. Bauer (Issy-les-Moulineaux), R. Bostrom (Uppsala), C.G. FalthallDlar (Stockholm), T. The Theory Institute in Solar-Terrestrial Physics was held at Boston College 19-26 August 1982. The program consisted of a two-week School followed by the first theory conference in the field. This book is based upon the lectures presented at the School. Several years ago there was a convergence of efforts to promote the role of theory in space plasma physics. Reports from the National Academy of Sciences and NASA advisory committees documented the disciplinary maturity of solar-terrestrial physics and recommended that theorists play a greater role in the continued development of the field. The so-called theory program in solar-terrestrial physics was established by NASA in 1979 and implemented in accordance with the guidelines set forth by a panel of scientists, primarily theorists, in the field. The same panel motivated the Boston College program. Published proceedings of the school would provide curricular materials for the training of graduate students in solar-terrestrial physics. J.M. Forbes, T.E. Holzer, A.J. Hundhausen, A.D. Richmond, and G.L. Siscoe were the principal architects of the curriculum of the School, and I am grateful for their contributions. Each also lectured at the School. The chapters in this book were prepared by the authors themselves with one exception. The chapters by Parker are edited reproductions of his lectures. Unfortunately, it is our loss that the lectures of Holzer and Hundhausen are not included in the book.

This report provides an introductory overview of electrodynamic interactions between the magnetosphere and ionosphere. In the first half of the paper, the viscous interaction and magnetic merging models for driving convection are described. The notion of adiabatic heating as a natural consequence of convection is introduced, in conjunction with a quasi-empirical model for the magnetospheric potential. The second half of the paper concerns observations of electrodynamic quantities taken in the topside ionosphere in the polar cap and auroral oval.
