The Quantum Cellular Automaton (QCA) concept represents an attempt to break away from the traditional three-terminal device paradigm that has dominated digital computation. Since its early formulation in 1993 at Notre Dame University, the QCA idea has received significant attention and several physical implementations have been proposed. This book provides a comprehensive discussion of the simulation approaches and the experimental work that have been undertaken on the fabrication of devices capable of demonstrating the fundamentals of QCA action. Complementary views of future perspectives for QCA technology are presented, highlighting a process of realistic simulation and of targeted experiments that can be assumed as a model for the evaluation of future device proposals. Contents: The Concept of Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (C S Lent); Simulation with the Occupation-Number Hamiltonian (M Macucci & M Governale); Realistic Time-Independent Models of a QCA Cell (J Martorell et al.); Time-Independent Simulation of QCA Circuits (L Bonci et al.); Simulation of the Time-Dependent Behavior of QCA Circuits with the Occupation-Number Hamiltonian (I Yakimenko & K-F Berggren); Time-Dependent Analysis of QCA Circuits with the Monte Carlo Method (L Bonci et al.); Implementation of QCA Cells with SOI Technology (F E Prins et al.); Implementation of QCA Cells in GaAs Technology (Y Jin et al.); Non-Invasive Charge Detectors (G Iannaccone et al.); Metal Dot QCA (G L Snider et al.); Molecular QCA (C S Lent); Magnetic Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (MQCA) (A Imre et al.). Modelling and simulation are disciplines of major importance for science and engineering. There is no science without models, and simulation has nowadays become a very useful tool, sometimes unavoidable, for development of both science and engineering. The main attractive feature of cellular automata is that, in spite of their conceptual simplicity which allows an easiness of implementation for computer simulation, as a detailed and complete mathematical analysis in principle, they are able to exhibit a wide variety of amazingly complex behaviour. This feature of cellular automata has attracted the researchers' attention from a wide variety of divergent fields of the exact disciplines of science and engineering, but also of the social sciences, and sometimes beyond. The collective complex behaviour of numerous systems, which emerge from the interaction of a multitude of simple individuals, is being conveniently modelled and simulated with cellular automata for very different purposes. In this book, a number of innovative applications of cellular automata models in the fields of Quantum Computing, Materials Science, Cryptography and Coding, and Robotics and Image Processing are presented.

The Cellular Automaton Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics written by Gerard 't Hooft and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-02 with Science categories.

This book presents the deterministic view of quantum mechanics developed by Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft. Dissatisfied with the uncomfortable gaps in the way conventional quantum mechanics meshes with the classical world, 't Hooft has revived the old hidden variable ideas, but now in a much more systematic way than usual. In this, quantum mechanics is viewed as a tool rather than a theory. The author gives examples of models that are classical in essence, but can be analysed by the use of quantum techniques, and argues that even the Standard Model, together with gravitational interactions, might be viewed as a quantum mechanical approach to analysing a system that could be classical at its core. He shows how this approach, even though it is based on hidden variables, can be plausibly reconciled with Bell's theorem, and how the usual objections voiced against the idea of ‘superdeterminism' can be overcome, at least in principle. This framework elegantly explains - and automatically cures - the problems of the wave function collapse and the measurement problem. Even the existence of an “arrow of time" can perhaps be explained in a more elegant way than usual. As well as reviewing the author’s earlier work in the field, the book also contains many new observations and calculations. It provides stimulating reading for all physicists working on the foundations of quantum theory.

Quantum cellular autornata (QCA) consist of an array of identical, finite dimensional, quantum systems. These evolve in discrete time steps according t.o a causal, shift-invariant unitary evolution. VJe review the literature of QCA, after having provided the necessary elements of Quantum Theory and some background of Cellular Automata. We thon move on to consider a graph with a. single quantum system at each node. The entire compound system evolves in discrete time steps by iterating a global evolution U. M'e require that this global evolution U be unitary, in accordance with quantum theory, and that this global evolution U bc causal, in accordance witlr special relativity. By causal we mean that information can only ever bc transmitted at a bounded speed, the speed bound being quite naturally that of one edge of the underlying graph per iteration of U. We show that these unitary causal U can be implemented locally; i.e. it can bc put into the form of a quantum circuit made up with more elementary operators - each acting solely upon neiglibouring nodes. - We apply the above gerieral result to ?ï-diiriensional quantum cellular automata in order to obtain a block representation of thenr. Hence we have shown their general, axiomatic definition still yields a unifying, operational representation of thern. Some non-trivial consequences are explored, such as the fa.ct that bijective non-reversible CA are net physical as closed systems, or that quantum information may travel faster than classical - withiri some fixed dynarnics. - Finally we describc n.-dimensional quantum cellular automata capable of simulating all others. By this we mean that the initial configuration and the local transition rule of any one-dimensional QCA eau be cncoded within the initial configuration of the universel QCA. Several stops of the universel QCA will thon correspond to one stop of the. simulated QCA. The simulation preserves the topology in tire sense that cach cell of the simulated QCA is encoded as a group of adjacent. cells in the universel QCA. The encoding is linear and hence does not carry any of the cost of the. computation.

The Notre Dame group has developed a new paradigm for ultra-dense and ultra-dense and ultra-fast information processing in nanoelectronic systems. These Quantum Cellular Automata (QCA's) are the first concrete proposal for a technology based on arrays of coupled quantum dots. The basic building block of these cellular arrays is the Notre Dame Logic Cell, as it has been called in the literature. The phenomenon of Coulomb exclusion, which is a synergistic interplay of quantum confinement and Coulomb interaction, leads to a bistable behavior of each cell which makes possible their use in large-scale cellular arrays. The physical interaction between neighboring cells has been exploited to implement logic functions. New functionality may be achieved in this fashion, and the Notre Dame group invented a versatile majority logic gate. In a series of papers, the feasibility of QCA wires, wire crossing, inverters, and Boolean logic gates was demonstrated. A major finding is that all logic functions may be integrated in a hierarchial fashion which allows the design of complicated QCA structures. The most complicated system which was simulated to date is a one-bit full adder consisting of some 200 cells. In addition to exploring these new concepts, efforts are under way to physically realize such structures both in semiconductor and metal systems. Extensive modelling work of semiconductor quantum dot structures has helped identify optimum design parameters for QCA experimental implementations.

This research monograph focuses on the design of arithmetic circuits in Quantum Dot Cellular Automata (QCA). Using the fact that the 3-input majority gate is a primitive in QCA, the book sets out to discover hitherto unknown properties of majority logic in the context of arithmetic circuit designs. The pursuit for efficient adders in QCA takes two forms. One involves application of the new results in majority logic to existing adders. The second involves development of a custom adder for QCA technology. A QCA adder named as hybrid adder is proposed and it is shown that it outperforms existing multi-bit adders with respect to area and delay. The work is extended to the design of a low-complexity multiplier for signed numbers in QCA. Furthermore the book explores two aspects unique to QCA technology, namely thermal robustness and the role of interconnects. In addition, the book introduces the reader to QCA layout design and simulation using QCADesigner. Features & Benefits: This research-based book: ·Introduces the reader to Quantum Dot Cellular Automata, an emerging nanotechnology. ·Explores properties of majority logic. ·Demonstrates application of the properties to design efficient arithmetic circuits. ·Guides the reader towards layout design and simulation in QCADesigner.
