Quantum correlations are not restricted to the well known entanglement investigated in Bell-type experiments. Other forms of correlations, for example quantum discord, have recently been shown to play an important role in several aspects of quantum information theory. First experiments also support these findings. This book is an introduction into this up-and-coming research field and its likely impact on quantum technology. After giving a general introduction to the concept of quantum correlations and their role in quantum information theory, the author describes a number of pertinent results and their implications.

This book presents a distinctive way of understanding quantum correlations beyond entanglement, introducing readers to this less explored yet very fundamental aspect of quantum theory. It takes into account most of the new ideas involving quantum phenomena, resources, and applications without entanglement, both from a theoretical and an experimental point of view. This book serves as a reference for both beginner students and experienced researchers in physics and applied mathematics, with an interest in joining this novel venture towards understanding the quantum nature of the world.

This thesis explores the role of non-classical correlations in bipartite continuous variable quantum systems, and the approach taken is three-fold. We show that given two initially entangled atomic ensembles, it is possible to probabilistically increase the entanglement between them using a beamsplitter-like interaction formed from two quantum non-demolition (QND) interactions with auxiliary polarised light modes. We then develop an elegant method to calculate density matrix elements of non-Gaussian bipartite quantum states and use this to show that the entanglement in a two mode squeezed vacuum can be distilled using QND interactions and non-Gaussian elements. Secondly, we introduce a potential new measure of quantum entanglement in bipartite Gaussian states. This measure has an operational meaning in quantum cryptography and provides an upper bound on the amount of a secret key that can be distilled from a Gaussian probability distribution shared by two conspirators, Alice and Bob, given the presence of an eavesdropper, Eve. Finally, we go beyond the realm of quantum entanglement to explore other non-classical correlations in continuous variable systems. We provide solutions for a number of these measures on two mode Gaussian states and introduce the Gaussian Ameliorated Measurement Induced Disturbance (GAMID). The interplay between these different measures and quantum entanglement is examined. We then attempt to take small steps into the non-Gaussian regime by computing these non-classicality measures on the three-parameter continuous variable Werner states.

Quantum Correlations Quantum Resource Theories And Exclusion Game written by Zi-Wen Liu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.

This thesis addresses two topics in quantum information theory. The first topic is quantum correlations and quantum resource theory. The second is quantum communication theory. The first part summarizes an ongoing work about quantum correlations beyond entanglement and quantum resource theories. We systematically explain the concept quantum correlations beyond entanglement, and introduce a unified framework of measuring such correlations with entropic quantities. In particular, a new measure called Diagonal Discord (DD), which is simpler to compute than discord but still possesses several nice properties, is proposed. As an application to real physical scenarios, we study the scaling behaviors of quantum correlations in spin lattices with these measures. On its own, however, the theory of quantum correlations is not yet a satisfactory quantum resource theory. Some partial results towards this goal are introduced. Furthermore, a unified abstract structure of general quantum resource theories and its duality is formalized. The second part shows that there exist (one-way) communication tasks with an infinite gap between quantum communication complexity and quantum information complexity. We consider the exclusion game, recently introduced by Perry, Jain and Oppenheim [80], which exhibits the property that for appropriately chosen parameters of the game, there exists an winning quantum strategy that reveals vanishingly small amount of information as the size of the problem n increases, i.e., the quantum (internal) information cost vanishes in the large n limit. For those parameters, we prove the quantum communication cost (the size of quantum communication to succeed) is lower bounded by Q (log n), thereby proving an infinite gap between quantum information and communication costs. This infinite gap is further shown to be robust against sufficiently small error. Some other interesting features of the exclusion game are also discovered as byproducts.

Extracting Quantum Correlations From Gaussian States written by Helen Mary Chrzanowski and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Gaussian processes categories.

The Gaussian toolbox of the continuous variables provides for deterministic, high-efficiency operations with non-classical states. Its very Gaussian nature, however, restricts its reach for quantum information and communication applications. This thesis comprises three experimental works, which seek to examine the strengths of this toolbox and address some of its weaknesses. The measurement-based non-linearity of a conditional photon-counting measurement can be used to de-Gaussify a Gaussian state of light. Here, we propose a continuous variable analog of just such a 'heralding' measurement, replacing a non-deterministic photon-counting measurement with a deterministic measurement of the field quadratures. Such a technique cannot be used to prepare a non-Gaussian state, but it can, on average, yield the same non-Gaussian statistics. We demonstrate this technique by reconstructing the statistics of non-Gaussian photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states. We then consider the problem of noiseless linear amplification. We experimentally demonstrate that in certain scenarios, the requirement for a physical noiseless linear amplifier can be exchanged for a straightforward post-selection of the measurement record. We apply our 'virtual' noiseless amplifier to entanglement degraded by transmission loss of up to the equivalent of 100km of optical fibre. We extract an effective entangled resource stronger than even that achievable with a maximally entangled resource passively transmitted through the same channel. We also provide a proof-of-principle demonstration of the value of the measurement-based noiseless linear amplifier for quantum key distribution, extracting a secret key from an otherwise insecure regime. Lastly, we turn to the recently popularised measure of all quantum correlations: quantum discord. Quantum discord has emerged as a measure of quantum correlations beyond entanglement, with significant ramifications for our understanding of Gaussian states. Here, we introduce a simple protocol that yields an operational interpretation of quantum discord: that discord describes information only accessible via coherent interactions. We first experimentally encode information within the discordant correlations of two separable Gaussian states. The amount of extra information recovered by coherent interactions is directly linked to the discord of the original state.
