Three key aspects of quantum gravity are considered in this book: phenomenology, potential experimental aspects and foundational theory. The phenomenology is the treatment of metric quantum fluctuations as torsional curves that deviate from classical expectations. This leads to possible experimental configurations that may detect such fluctuations. Most of these proposed experiments are quantum optical measurements of subtle quantum gravity effects in the interaction of photons and atoms. The foundational discussions attempt to find an substratum to string theories, which are motivated by the phenomenological treatment. Quantum gravity is not the quantization of general relativity, but is instead the embedding of quantum theory and gravitation into a more fundamental field theoretic framework.

The principal intent of this monograph is to present in a systematic and self-con tained fashion the basic tenets, ideas and results of a framework for the consistent unification of relativity and quantum theory based on a quantum concept of spacetime, and incorporating the basic principles of the theory of stochastic spaces in combination with those of Born's reciprocity theory. In this context, by the physicial consistency of the present framework we mean that the advocated approach to relativistic quantum theory relies on a consistent probabilistic interpretation, which is proven to be a direct extrapolation of the conventional interpretation of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The central issue here is that we can derive conserved and relativistically convariant probability currents, which are shown to merge into their nonrelativistic counterparts in the nonrelativistic limit, and which at the same time explain the physical and mathe matical reasons behind the basic fact that no probability currents that consistently describe pointlike particle localizability exist in conventional relativistic quantum mechanics. Thus, it is not that we dispense with the concept oflocality, but rather the advanced central thesis is that the classical concept of locality based on point like localizability is inconsistent in the realm of relativistic quantum theory, and should be replaced by a concept of quantum locality based on stochastically formulated systems of covariance and related to the aforementioned currents.

One of the most important questions concerning the foundations of physics, especially since the discovery of relativity and quantum theory, is the nature and role of time. In this book we bring together researchers from different areas of physics, mathematics, computer science and philosophy to discuss the role time plays in physics. There have been few books on this topic to date, and two of the key aims of the workshop and this book are to encourage more researchers to explore this area, and to pique students’ interest in the different roles time plays in physics.

Quantum physics started in the 1920's with wave mechanics and the wave-particle duality. However, the last 20 years have seen a second quantum revolution, centered around non-locality and quantum correlations between measurement outcomes. The associated key property, entanglement, is recognized today as the signature of quantumness. This second revolution opened the possibility of studying quantum correlations without any assumption on the internal functioning of the measurement apparata, the so-called Device-Independent Approach to Quantum Physics. This thesis explores this new approach using the powerful geometrical tool of polytopes. Emphasis is placed on the study of non-locality in the case of three or more parties, where it is shown that a whole new variety of phenomena appear compared to the bipartite case. Genuine multiparty entanglement is also studied for the first time within the device-independent framework. Finally, these tools are used to answer a long-standing open question: could quantum non-locality be explained by influences that propagate from one party to the others faster than light, but that remain hidden so that one cannot use them to communicate faster than light? This would provide a way around Einstein's notion of action at a distance that would be compatible with relativity. However, the answer is shown to be negative, as such influences could not remain hidden.

We adopt an operational mode of thinking to study spacetime fluctuations and their impacts on questions of quantum gravity. Particular emphasis is put on studying causal structure fluctuations. The study is guided by the principle of causal neutrality, which says that fundamental concepts and laws of physics should be stated without assuming a definite spacetime causal structure. Most traditional concepts and theories of physics violate this principle. A major theme of this thesis is to upgrade the traditional concepts and theories in accordance with the principle of causal neutrality. Among other things, the thesis include works on the following. (1) An axiomatic derivation of the complex Hilbert space structure of quantum theory without assuming definite causal structure. (2) A so-called causally neutral quantum field theory (CNQFT) framework for algebraic quantum physics allowing indefinite causal structure. (3) A proposal that causal fluctuation regularizes quantum field ultraviolet divergences (UV) and that the UV regularizing correlation functions with causal fluctuations characterize the UV structure of physical states. (4) A study on quantitative measures of causality. (5) A so-called ``correlation networks'' framework to study quantum theory with indefinite causal structure, which generalizes previous frameworks. (6) New definitions of entanglement and entanglement measures that conform to the causal neutrality principle. (7) Ideas on finding a causally neutral analogue of Einstein's equation for quantum spacetime. (8) A simple theorem showing that the communication capacities of general correlations (with definite or indefinite causal structure) defined with respect to state transmission can be reduced to those of channels.
