What did the creators of the ancient “Yijing” (Book of Changes) think about the relations between the mind and the universe? Was their understanding more in line with a clockwork type of Newtonian universe or a holistic quantum universe? In this book, we explore the connections between modern quantum science and the ancient Yijing. The Yijing is a classic text that elucidates the profound principles of humans and their relation to the universe, and forms the foundation of Chinese traditional thought. Quantum science brings us to the dawn of a new era of science and technology and provides a key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe. We show how the principles of quantum theory were also contemplated in some ways by the creators of the Yijing. In short, there seems to be some quantum theory hidden inside the Yijing.

Jung’s understanding of Yijing for supporting the synchronistic principle reveals the key issues of his archetypal theory. Jung’s archetypal theory, which is the basic motif of his understanding of Yijing, illuminates the religious significance of Yijing. Jung defines the human experience of the divine as an archetypal process by way of which the unconscious conveys the human religious experience. In this way, the divine and the unconscious mind are inseparable from each other. For the human experience of the divine, Jung’s archetypal theory developed in a theistic tradition is encountered with the religious character of the non-theistic tradition of Yijing. From Jung’s partial adaptation of Yijing, however, we notice the differences between Jung’s archetypal psychology and the Yijing cosmological view. This difference represents the difference between the Western and the East Asian tradition. This aspect is well shown in the fact that Jung’s theoretical assumption for the definition of archetype is deeply associated with Plato’s Idea and the Kantian a priori category. Accordingly, Jung brings their timeless-spaceless realm of archetype into the synchronistic phenomenon of the psyche and identifies the Yijing text with the readable archetype. Yet, the synchronistic moment that Jung presents is the phenomenon always involved in subjective experience and intuition, which are developed in the duration of time. The synchronistic phenomenon is not transcendent or the objective flowing of time-in-itself regardless of our subjective experience.

I Ching created from keen observation of the nature in the universe. The key components of Yi Jing are the yin and yang duality, the four phenomena, trigram, two sets of eight trigrams, the 64 hexagrams, two sets of 64 trigrams. The yin and yang duality of the universe posited in Yi Jing correlates with the matter duality of the universe theorized in quantum mechanics. The four phenomena are two sets of four yin and yang configurations. They correlate with DNA and RNA four chemicals configuration. Trigram is the triple yin and yang configuration, it correlates with codon which is the three-chemical configuration in DNA and RNA. The two sets of 64 trigrams in Yi Jing correlate with the two sets of 64 codons in DNA and RNA. Yi Jings hexagrams and lines are the external factors of changes that offer seekers accurate advice for dilemmatic issues in oracle use.

Confucius was idolized, neglected, or disdained over centuries in China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan, as well as in the West, but was revered by some great European thinkers in the Age of Enlightenment. There are only a few studies about how Confucius’ basic ideas can be integrated with Western rational thought. This new book situates Confucian ideas in complexity theory to demonstrate how East Asian rationality (based on the Yi Jing) and Western rationality based on Newtonian principles, can be integrated. This re-examination of Chinese civilization, especially the thoughts of Confucius in the light of complexity theory, is a unique contribution. Understanding Confucius and his implications for modern thought provides key insights into contemporary East Asian societies.

Chinese traditional culture cannot be understood without some familiarity with the I Ching, yet it is one of the most difficult of the world's ancient classics. Assembled from fragments with many obscure allusions, it was the subject of ingenious, but often conflicting, interpretations over nearly three thousand years. Teaching the I Ching (Book of Changes) offers a comprehensive study at a time when interest in Asian philosophy and the culture of China is on the rise. Still widely read in China, it has become a countercultural classic in the West. Recent scholarship has radically altered our understanding of this foundational work. Geoffrey Redmond and Tze-Ki Hon present an up-to-date survey of recent studies including reconstruction of the early meanings, excavated manuscripts, the New Culture Movement, and the Cultural Revolution. To facilitate introducing the classic to students, the necessary background is provided for university teachers and students, even non-China specialists. The teaching approaches described will foreground the otherness of the classic, yet engage the interests of twenty-first-century students. Rather than dismissing the text's popular association with divination, they explain why this mode of human thought has persisted for millennia. Thus, Redmond and Hon mediate between the two extreme views of the classic: a source of timeless ancient wisdom on the one hand, and a historical curiosity on the other. Teaching the I Ching (Book of Changes) makes this important classic accessible to a broad readership, thus providing a crucial service for those interested in China, early civilization, and world religion. Now anyone with a serious interest can understand a text that continues to have a decisive influence on Chinese and world culture three thousand years after its original composition.

Eurasian Philosophy and Quantum Metaphysics (Theology Reconsidered) By: Juan Valdez The science of our modern age is able to neither address nor solve our current global problems. Author Juan Valdez believes we should study humanity’s ancient wisdom and philosophy texts to develop a new intellectual paradigm that can respond and support our current needs. Eurasian Philosophy and Quantum Metaphysics (Theology Reconsidered) is an in-depth study of the origins and meanings of ancient philosophies before they were fractured into mythology and religions and attacked by modern science. Beginning with creation mythology in Eurasia through the development of philosophical thought, to the Scientific Revolution to our own modern Quantum Era, the progression – and abandonment – of ancient wisdom is carefully studied. Valdez reviews and analyzes the ancient texts themselves to understand what they truly say and not what later historians have said about them. The Indo-Aryan Vedas, the Torah, Rene Descartes’ Discourse on the Method and Principles of Philosophy, Neils Bohr’s Atomic Theory, and more, are all respectfully and critically assessed. As enlightened as we may consider ourselves, Valdez calls attention to how limited modern thought has become. By reviewing past wisdom, we can not only rediscover the roots of modern thought but place Wisdom itself at the top of intellectual pursuits. Eurasian Philosophy and Quantum Metaphysics (Theology Reconsidered) is a rich and nuanced study on how humanity has thought of itself.

This book questions whether the ancient, iconic Chinese book of divination, The Classic of Changes (Yijing) might help us navigate the precarious, complex, and seemingly unpredictable intricacies of present contemporary times. The essays contained in this book respond affirmatively to this question in seeking to show how The Classic of Changes can help us think through the particularly human challenge of establishing meaning and making choices between alternatives. The author’s book explores and discusses novel and often surprising ways for contemporary readers to interpret and apply this ancient Chinese classic, touching upon fields such as narration, technology, ecology, psychology, aesthetics, ontology, cognition, semiotics, and gender issues. This book is of appeal to both students and informed readers with an interest in the mysteries of The Classic of Changes, and to researchers in areas of Chinese philosophy, Chinese history, religious studies, and East Asian approaches to health and well-being.

The contributions to the collection Systems Theory and Theology explore the interplay between systems theory, religion and theology, and the symbolic expressions and philosophical foundations of these academic disciplines. This endeavor is rooted in the oeuvre of the late Austrian physicist Alfred Locker (1922-2005), who firmly believed that systems theory would finally emerge, some sixty years after von Bertalanffy's seminal work on General System Theory, as a bridge-building metatheory between the sciences and religion. The essays in this volume show, however, that such conversation transcends the usual form of dialogue among these disciplines. The studies contained in this collection enter into a critical evaluation and reassessment of the dominant postulates of scientific and theological systems and their interaction. Systems Theory and Theology includes treatments of paradoxes (A. Locker), the inner sciences (Zwick), systems of meaning (Krieger), philosophy (Murphy), theology (Sedmak), isomorphies of religious symbols (Zwick), and the bridging of science and religion (M. Locker).
